The Guns of Navarone (1961)
👍🏻
Absorbing and effective adaptation of Alistair MacLean's novel where a small team of Allied commandoes is sent to an Greek island that's occupied by the Germans and destroy two massive batteries that cover a crucial area in the Aegean Sea. The cast is pretty good all-around with Gregory Peck and David Niven are the standouts and the smooth direction of J. Lee Thompson make this movie an absolute gem that seems timeless. A first-class adventure.
Casablanca (1942)
Wow!!!
My friends and I talked for a long time about hiring Casablanca. Therefore, when I saw him in the library for free, I, of course, ventured to borrow him!
The big day has come - we were going to see the most classic film of all time. And what an experience it was to see the film. I mean, the film was excellent from the very beginning to the end. MASTERPIECE! Very great cast performance too! Be sure to look ...
V zone osobogo vnimaniya (1978)
Compare with Red Dawn
A rather curious film about Soviet paratroopers (desantniki). Especially when compared to "Red Dawn." The film must be expensive even for the Soviets. But therefore, it looks quite high quality. We can see how the training of Soviet paratroopers takes place. I think that modern Russian paratroopers are trained according to the Soviet system. It was interesting to watch. I recommend to those who are interested, who will actually capture the United States from the air. And compare with Red Dawn so you have doubts ...
V nebe 'Nochnye vedmy' (1981)
4/10
Well, yes - in war, all means are good - which lead to victory!
When Hannah Reich was sleeping - these - flew and threw bombs! When Hannah Reich flew out AFTERNOON - SHE shot down 302 enemy planes and Her opponents were not PO - 2 (maize in the future) - But Battle pilots !! BUT you can be proud - your great-grandfathers and grandfathers - not the go grandchildren won - And the best in the world! HOW ASOV has always been crushed by the masses!
But in a future war - US pilots perform exercises at 8 g - RF - only at 5 g! DO YOU DARE !? Train!
PS- By the way - and the Vertical Take-Off Mig - On YOUtube - which you all watched with pleasure (WE are again ahead of the rest) - COULD be completed - Only Your Only One Test Pilot! (probably on a SPECIALLY prepared aircraft!)
Now, if the regiment of fighters is ALL of a sudden - they will perform such a maneuver! Then I respectfully!
Spetsnaz (2002)
Russian comics about Spetsnaz
I follow the news from Syria and I see that now the Russians there have begun to move into those territories that were previously controlled by Western peacekeepers. And often I watch how the news talk about the Russian special forces "spetsnaz". I was curious and found a Russian show about their special forces. I've seen a few episodes, where the elite PODRAZDELENIE sent to various missions especially against the Chechens. Of course, the Russians show special forces with the best hand, so that the population was sure that they will always win, and especially now, in Syria. I agree with the review mombasa_pete is a z-rank action movie and that it is not the best show of all about Russian special forces. I think all governments like to make movies about their special forces to show their power. It was a shoddy show. Thumbs down
Zhenya, Zhenechka i 'Katyusha' (1967)
Romantic relationships during the war
This is an unusual movie about the Second world war. Russian Russian film shows that Russian soldiers also had love Affairs with female soldiers. If you think that in this Russian war film you will see battles, then it is vain expectations. The whole story is about a young soldier in his unit and he does not know how to respect his commander and success with the woman he fell in love with. But then she, too, is beginning to to experience romantic feelings to this soldier. But they were forced to part ways in the war. The Soviets have occupied Berlin and the soldier meets his woman again. But she is killed by a random Nazi. That's all... The film is subtitled and so you can understand the whole story. But I wasn't impressed. Russians in the Soviet period make strange war movies. In the second old film, which I reviewed was the same actor as in this film. In modern Stalingrad, too, there is a romantic line and it develops against the backdrop of battles. And it's more interesting to watch. I do not recommend this old boring Soviet war film.
Stalingrad (2013)
5/10
It's nothing to do with the flag-waving patriotism nor any kind of moral quandary, but instead the Russian blockbuster's slick, stereoscopic visuals. A sea of blue-grey is dimmed further by 3D, whilst explosions provide the majority of colourful focal points in a representation of a war-torn city that never quite feels right. It could potentially be part of the plan, for a plot imbued with a fable-like quality, but it's all far too weightless. For a drama with a heavy emphasis on spectacle, it's an odd sensation when the visuals are so alienating.
Midway (2019)
expected better...
While sitting in the theatre, I was sure most men wanted to be them, and most women wanted to do them. Hell, when I watched Dick Best dive bomb a Japanese destroyer and then turn back and go at them one more time as if he was returning a few rounds of blazing hot lead he borrowed last week, I briefly considered giving my wife a hall-pass for him that night; only him, though.
That, though, is the problem I have with Roland Emmerich's Midway, the mercurial, big-screen action director, whose new film is much more Independence Day than Saving Private Ryan. These CGI special effects are great to look at, gorgeous even, but cartoonish because so much of it is computer-generated. You never have the feeling that if you reach out, you could touch a live-action plane; this is Star Wars, but now instead of Star Fighters and Y-Wings they are Aichi D34 Carrier-Borne Bombers, Douglas SDB-3 Dauntless Dive Bombers, and Douglas TBD Devastators; the carriers and destroyers are Star Cruisers and Death Stars. The film though, you are talking about a film which is so heavily invested in flight and vintage aircraft that it does an admirable job. The team here does build up a certain amount of suspense and thrills; mainly, the dive-bombing scenes gave me a sense of awe-struck pride and amazement. It's almost the equivalent of a child playing with a toy plane, and making bomb noises with their mouths as they send the plane towards the mother's carpeted family room floor (not the living room floor, that's the room always marked off for "company"). The film's scripted dialogue is recycled from war films of its own ilk multiple decades before, even though I was slightly relieved when they did acknowledge sacrifices on the other side of unseen events by civilians.
Storming Juno (2010)
heroes from Canada
There have been some excellent canadian films recently about this country's contribution to various wars. Assault on Juno (2010) is something not to be missed. A great documentary drama depicting the events of the d-day invasion when our troops landed on Juneau beach. Surviving veterans - now octogenarians are interviewed after staging. Their emotions encompass pride, shame, sadness, nostalgia, and a kind of bewilderment. The assault on Juno plays out the specific events of people who have served in various divisions: the amphibious tank team, the amphibious assault team, the amphibious assault team, all set to achieve their goals in a gripping minute-by-minute story. Finally, Canada has been wonderfully presented, and the film sounds so true that all the parts that have been dramatized merge completely with the news reels. It's terribly moving, and if you don't have a stone instead of a heart, you just can't help crying at different times.
Schindler's List (1993)
3/10
I've seen many documentaries on A&E, History Channel, etc on the holocaust and I guess I just presumed that everyone else had too. Apparently a lot of people never have, never read about it in school or anything either. After it was over, these people in the theater were all sitting there like they were stunned or something. Like they just had no idea that stuff like that happened during WWII. I was thinking to myself "lets just get the heck out of here".
I have lost my enthusiasm for any Steven Spielberg movies over the past several years, ever since he made the switch from good entertainment to preachy message movies showing people all angsty and heartfelt and noble, emotions which he approaches with all the subtlety of Gallagher and his Sledge-o-matic. Spielberg's films are now more like the corny ramblings of grandpa in his dotage where good people are really good and bad people are bad and even people who are in that grey zone are given a black or white role in the end. It's all quite tedious to watch.
A Bridge Too Far (1977)
10\10
I am a big fan of war films and a special place in my collection is occupied by historical films. "Bridge too far" is one of them. This is a real film from which we can learn how things really were and how this operation affected the final defeat of the Nazis
Windtalkers (2002)
Nicolas Cage!!!
As I've read other reviews here, I agree with them on how Nicolas Cage wins us the war wherever he appears. It was funny. Although himself the film me grassroots.
U-571 (2000)
8\10 great show
This is a wonderful war movie about heroes on submarines. Of course for me the coolest underwater movie will always be "Submarine". But here we also see what our guys had to experience, so that in the end we deserved to win against the Nazis. I will not speak on behalf of the real story, but watch it and have fun
Khronika pikiruyushchego bombardirovshchika (1968)
The war always killed the young
This is my first review here and I want to write it after watching this film. If you expect to see action, you will be disappointed. Here is a consistent story about the team of a Russian bomber flying out on dangerous missions on the Eastern front. They are young and strong. they think about their peaceful lives. and they eventually die. This is quite interesting and liked the lack of Communist propaganda in this Soviet film . I watched it without translation, I was helped by a friend from Russia, with whom we are working together on a project in Asia . He said that in Russia it is a favorite movie about WWII. This is my first experience of films from Russia. The Russians, too, fought with us against the Nazis as our Allies and deserved honors. When I asked him why they acted like Japanese kamikazes, because they were so young, my Russian friend told me that they could not do otherwise... I didn't really understand it, but I just agreed with him. If you come across a version with subtitles, it is recommended to watch.
