Spider-Man 2 (2004)
The Greatest Superhero Movie Ever made.
Absolutely amazing. Spiderman has always been my favorite superhero and I'm so pleased that Sam Raimi has treated the original comic book with the greatest respect.
The action is breath-taking. Some sequences I never wanted to end. The movie is held together with good storylines and a solid underlying message. The whole cast do a great job, especially Tobey Macguire who seems absolutely perfect in the title role.
It looks like the comic book and the story unfolds like a comic book. The whole thing left me wanting to see Spiderman 3 immediately.
This is the new benchmark for Superhero movies.
Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004)
What a let-down!
I loved Kill Bill Vol.1 and I really enjoyed some parts of this volume (the Pai Mei story particularly). However, about halfway into the movie I became incredibly bored. The main reason was David Carradine. He seems to have been paid by the minute as he draws out every line as long as possible.
The film really hit the skids after the introdution of the daughter. That section of the movie was so bad I couldn't take any more and left the theater. What a shame. Especially as I was looking forward to this so much. I guess splitting the film in two was a great way to get people to see another hour or so of bad footage.
Be Somebody... or Be Somebody's Fool! (1984)
Use ya head!
This piece gives us an in-depth look into the philosophy and psyche of this modern-day thinker and performer, Mr. T. The film demands our attention and with repeat viewing the metaphors in his performance become clear. We see Mr.T's struggle for attention and respect mirrored in his struggle with the cello. We see a man of great vunerability trying to gain acceptance with his gold. We see a man searching for his lost child-hood. This is more than a movie. It is a moving experience and one not easily forgotten.
Donnie Darko (2001)
Watch this movie.
I've been waiting some time to see this and I'm so glad I have, at last. The film is intriguing, beautifully shot and well performed. It's also welcome to see a film that lets you think and doesn't spell everything out for you. I'm sure I haven't spotted everything in this movie and so I'm looking forward to seeing it again.
Signs (2002)
Third time unlucky.
I'm a big fan of "Sixth Sense" and "Unbreakable" and was really looking forward to seeing M. Nights third movie. It took me a while to get round to seeing it and now I wish I hadn't bothered. The movie builds nicely, setting up tension and suspense and then goes sharply down-hill. I think the ending was scribbled down in five minutes on the back of a cigarette packet. The ending was a bit "Mars Attacks" ish. But I enjoyed Mars Attacks more.
Jerry Maguire (1996)
Worst movie ever!
I was finally persuaded to see this movie and it was worse than I thought! So Jerry is a greedy self-obsessed sports agent and he loses his job. Are we supposed to feel sorry for him? I have no sympathy for any of the characters in this film. It was truly painful to watch. I'd rather go to the dentist for two hours.
Minority Report (2002)
Good but not great.
This is a good movie. But it could have been a great one. It's well acted, visually stunning and well paced. But yet a again Speilberg seems unable to made a movie without loading it up with schmaltz. In a couple of scenes (regarding Toms lost son) I found myself looking at the ceiling for a while. The ending is typical of Speilberg as well. This film could have benefitted from a not so happy ending. Also the audience is treated like idiots in the way everything is spelled out for them. As I said, it's a good film but not great. I think, maybe, a director with a darker edge could have done better with it.
Best in Show (2000)
Laughs from beginning to end.
It's great to see a comedy that has real jokes and not just wise-cracks. Each character was brilliantly written and portrayed. Even days afterwards I find myself laughing at some of the lines. I reccommend seeing it twice. There's too much good stuff to take in in one viewing. Even the dogs seem to be given a deadpan almost Buster Keaton like performance.
