The Frighteners (1996)
scary, funny and exciting.
During the 90's i rented about 7 movies per week. There is no other film that has made an impact on me as this one did.
I've seen it all. David Lynch movies, Scorsese, mr. O. Stone, James cameron. Small independent movies from all over the world. Big Hollywood productions. Japanese films (without subs i might add). The best of the best, with great casts and even better directors. This little gem is unbelievable. It blew me away at every turn. I totally wasn't prepared for this movie and since i only saw one Peter jackson movie before this one, my expectations weren't that high. But after this film i immediately went looking for more of Peter's stuff.
This movie has it all. It's enormously entertaining, scary at times but also very funny. It's not predictable at all. Mr. Fox is absolutely brilliant. Even now, 16 years later i still remember this film because it made a huge impact on me. I saw it's rating here on IMDb. 7 points is really not enough compared to the joy this film has given me.
A Thousand Words (2012)
reminds me af Disney
If you are looking for a nice film to watch on a Sunday morning. Or if you want to keep your kids quiet for a while this is for you.
I love this film. It's just plain good old fun, like Home Alone. It reminds me of Freaky Friday and other old Disney movies featuring Dean Jones. A more recent example to compare this film with would be Liar Liar from Jim Carrey. Here you don't worry about whats realistic or not. You just enjoy the humor. And if you think to yourself, i've seen this joke a million times. Yeah probably, but today's generation hasn't.
The story is funny, the jokes are silly. it's an innocent film. Maybe it is not the best movie ever. Maybe it's not the most original script. But if you complain about these minor details you're missing the point of this film. I have a weakness for this type of film. I really had a great time watching it. And i would recommend it to everyone.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012)
another cheap horror
In the last few years i've seen hundreds of these movies come and go. Cheap horror that lacks excitement, a decent cast and a good script. It must be really easy to make films nowadays cause everyone seems to be doing it. I'm sure there are people who like this type of film, lets call it cult B-movies. But to me it's just a big waste of time and money. The poster looks fantastic, thats probably where all the money went.
From the very first frame you get a good sense of where this film is going, absolutely nowhere. I guess it's made with a home or semi-pro camera. (thats how it looks to me) Most of the time thats my cue to sign off. But the trailer i saw seemed promising so i stuck with it. But after 30 minutes i got so bored with the bad acting and the terrible dialog i had to call it quits. What a shame that so many bad directors give the horror genre a bad name. I could have made this film, my 10 year old nephew could have. I don't want to be mean or disrespect the makers of this film, but they made it hard for me not to.
Soldiers of Fortune (2012)
waste of money and time
James Cromwell, Sean Bean, Ving Rhames and Christian Slater in a movie. I've seen them in movies i really liked. But why they chose to do this film is beyond me. Did they get paid an awesome amount of money. Are they helping out a friend by acting in his movie?
I don't have any answers to these questions. But if there ever was a disappointing movie, this one takes the cake. The camera work is really bad. It's not any better than a Holiday film shot by your neighbours. The script is silly and far-fetched. I don't mind a non-realistic film, but this is just silly. And don't even get me started on the editing of this film. I really had a hard time not to fall asleep. The action is very slow and boring.
If i had to guess i'd say this was made by a couple of amateurs with some time and money to spare. Christian is not at all believable in this roll. Ving Rhames is a great actor compared to him.:-)
E.T. and Friends: Magical Movie Visitors (1982)
Great stuff for fans of scifi and Robin Williams
Maybe it was released in America before E.T. came out, i don't know. But what i do know is that i saw this show on Dutch television after E.T. was released and it blew me away. Not only is Robin very funny but my interest was drawn towards these old scifi movies which i now collect. To me it's a miracle that IMDb has a description of the one time only show that i have been looking for ever since i lost the videotape on which i recorded the original program. If you ever get to see it you'r e quite lucky. Watch for the scene where Robin demonstrates what aliens sound like. It's typical for him but never boring to me.
