Survive the Night (2020)
A Father / Son redemption story
This was a pretty straight forward home invasion thriller set on a farm but with the criminals as more sympathetic villains. What kept me engaged was trying to guess how things would play out for the family and which side would come out on top in the end. The redemption story for Chad and Bruce (Frank and Rich) was the obvious central aspect. It was well done and had a nice conclusion to it that felt genuine. There's a couple violent scenes but it never crosses the line into all out gore. Worth a stream if you're into more dramatic thrillers.
The Usual Suspects (1995)
MASTERPIECE
A perfect movie from start to finish really no other thriller since this in the 90s has even come close. The twist at the end is hard to ever top.
Thank you to the filmmakers!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)
Dissapointing remake
I remember having Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures along with a toy Technodrome. I stopped watching that TV show around the time Mighty Morphin Power Rangers came on TV. Those earlier episodes of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that a lot of us remember when we were kids have long since not aired on TV. There were also a couple of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games I remember playing as a kid, like the 1989 Arcade version along with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles In Time for Super Nintendo. I played the 1989 Arcade Version as recently as 2006. My friend had the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game for Gamecube I think, and it had the original game. It was also at that time where the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had a newer series from 2003-2009. Now, I think kids today are familiar with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles because I think there is a newer version of that show since 2012 which I haven't seen. We also remember the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies from the early '90s, where a lot of the action in those earlier movies is slapstick humor along with the turtles being played by people in costumes rather than CGI effects we are used to nowadays. They would later make a 2007 computer animated version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles which I only saw once and didn't like it.
American Horror Story (2011)
Cheesy horror fun
Well I read the reviews and then started watching the pilot, with low expectations. Rather I found it very good. I really don't get the fact why people start comparing stuffs like this with previous similar ones. I mean the action is good, storyline is great and I couldn't see anyone over-acting. Right from the beginning, the building of characters was next to perfect. Its exactly what a pilot promises to deliver. A great start to a great storyline. I just hope they don't stretch it unnecessarily like few other TV series. Actors chosen are good, suiting the story. I would suggest to give this a try. Will definitely hook you up.
Arrow (2012)
Most Underrated Show for the CW
I thought this show would've been one of those cheesy superhero shows where they dart around and catch people. But no, my perspective completely change. I love this show and I don't understand why there are only 2 - 3 million views each week. I thought after the 5th episode the whole show would be repetitive but then the writers changed it up a bit, each ending of every episode there's a slight cliffhanger. Overall, try watching this show without knowing what to expect, because this show is amazingggg!
Star Trek: Voyager: Scorpion, Part II (1997)
Weaker Trek efforts
TNG and DS9 hold the bar for what Star Trek should be - philosophically inspiring explorations into a possible future we can all aspire to, even in the midst of intergalactic war. Voyager is an insult to their legacy.
Season 1 is a tired, dumbed down, shoot them up, mumble jumble of betrayals and double betrayals. A couple of great ideas like the mycelial network and alternate dimensions were explored, but we were only treated to superficial whip cream, not the sundae.
The Borg degenerated into barely comprehensible villains who have to spit out every word. Their bleached skin, one-dimensional characters have no redeemable value. I miss the warrior race bound by ritual and honor we both loved and hated in past incarnations. The female empowerment clap trap was not consistent with their misogynistic culture and seemed slapped on like a dead fish.
Don't trust the studio hacked ratings. No Trekkie would rate this over 5 stars. Netflix needs to stop paying for the international rights as it is simply rewarding bad behavior.
Trauma Center (2019)
Bread and Butter genre fare
The story has been told many times and the script is simplistic, bordering on clichés - but with some deft direction, camerawork and a great lead actress to anchor it all, it gels nicely into a tight 80 min thriller. Don't expect a Bruce Willis star vehicle, he's not in much and probably would have done without but that's not how these movies get made. The Puerto Rico vibe added some fresh environments to it as well. Overall, I'd say this was a decent thriller that hits all the right notes for a bread and butter genre fare.
