The Small One (1978)
The Crying Game
I am a person who is not usually moved by films, especially cartoons, but this one brings tears to my eyes even now as I write this review. I can remember watching it in fourth grade, bawling my eyes out, and I still cry every year when I watch it. It is a classic film that is a must-see for all ages. It transcends religion and is truly a story about friendship and sacrifice. The Small One is a film that can teach everyone its simple lesson.
First Years (2001)
The disappointment of the "First Years"
After weeks of hype, this show from the Peacock network proved to be nothing, if not underwhelming. The plot is predictable, the dialog puerile, and the characters stereotypical. The worst part is, the show strives to be meaningful and poignant, when it is truly about five superficial and narcissistic generation-Xers attempting to survive in the big bad world. Been there, done that. I myself am classified as a "Young Adult," to whom this show is being marketed, but "First Years" simply doesn't hold any appeal to me. It just doesn't measure up to the other NBC dramas, during which commercial spots have been superfluous over the past few weeks. I would choose West Wing, both Law and Order and SVU, Ed, or ER any day. But who knows? Maybe the writers and producers will get their acts together, although I doubt they will do so in time to save the show.
