Jason X (2001)
7/10
Best Slasher flick ever made
29 April 2002
Let me start by saying I don't like horror movies. I think they are trite gorefests whose only appeal is seeing people die in disgusting ways. A friend talked me into going to see Jason X, and I went to the matinee. Jason X was everything one expects from a slasher film- blood and guts, bad acting, cheesy music- but it was by far funnier than any slasher film I've seen. It never takes itself seriously, and that is the beauty of it. The characters don't seem to care that they are about to be killed as long as they can say some sarcastic remark before they get axed. Some of the deaths were inventive and a scene with two crystal lake camp counselors is the funniest thing I've seen at the movies all year. Don't see this movie if you are looking for award winning cinema, but I would recommend this for people looking for an entertaining movie.

Baby Boy (2001)
7/10
Eye Opening
22 July 2001
One thing that John Singleton has always done well is show white people what it's like to be black. Baby Boy takes another step, showing a black man in domestic life. It's about Jody, played surprisingly well by Tyrese Gibson, who constantly cheats on his girlfriend even though he loves her. Omar Gooding, Ving Rhames, and Snoop Dogg, play various people in his life, and each one influences him to make his final decision. Omar Gooding, who up until this had done children's sitcoms, plays his best friend who is dealing with alot of the same problems as Jody, but is more impulsive and not as smart, so he gets himself into trouble more. Ving Rhames, the highlight performance of the movie, plays Jody's mother's new boyfriend. At first Jody resents him, but Ving Rhames ends up being an inspirational figure. And Snoop Dogg plays the villain, an ex-con who sets his sights on Jody's girlfriend, and brings Jody to a point where he either has to leave all his childish ways behind and be a man, or lose everything he loves. Being white, it was eye opening to see how Jody lived. It was kind of a culture shock. All in all, I'd say that this movie was very entertaining, and, for me anyway, informative.

Snatch (2000)
9/10
Snatch is best movie of the year so far
19 July 2001
The cinemas in my city are so crappy about getting movies that are off the beaten path of the mainstream, that I was surprised we even got Snatch. I had never seen Lock Stock and the only thing I knew about Guy Ritchie was that he was married to Madonna. But some friends of mine talked me into going, and it was just fantastic. It had that hard edged comedy that Pulp Fiction seemingly invented. As a matter of fact, except for Fight Club, this may be the best movie that has come out since Pulp Fiction. This should definitely be up for an oscar, and Brad Pitt for best supporting actor. You can't understand a word he says but he still manages to say more than most actors do in a 5 minute monologue. Another highlight was Benicio Del Toro who, while not in the film for very long, steals every scene he's in. Vinnie Jones surprised me because I had never heard of him (I did recognize him though) and he was such a good tough guy. Now that this movie is out for rent, everyone can see it, and it is definitely the better choice than Save the Last Dance.
