Last Rites (2006)
More of an action movie than scary, but still very very cool...
Saw this at a midnight festival the other day and wasn't sure what to expect, but I've been on a zombie kick lately, and I was pleasantly surprised. I liked this one a lot. It's a little different than some other zombie movies, more like an action movie, but it worked...and there were a few twists that took me and the people I was with by surprise, which is hard to do, because I've seen a LOT of these kinds of movies, and thought I'd seen it all. At one point the whole crowd just sort of gasped, one of those 'did I just see what I think I saw?' moments. very cool.
There are long stretches without any zombies but I didn't really mind because there was enough other stuff going on, and every time I started thinking I hadn't seen any zombies in a while, they'd come back (and usually do something really cool (there's a scene in here that's one of the sickest I've ever seen, in a good way!) The action scenes in this one are good, too, you can tell what's going on, not like Batman Begins or some of the 28 days later stuff.
I liked the characters, even though there weren't really any 'good guys,' some of them were likable...I won't say which ones get killed or when, but it definitely wasn't who I expected.
All in all, a really good film that went by FAST. Reminded me of early John Carpenter, but faster paced.
Zombiez (2005)
oh my sweet lord
I can't even begin to describe how awful this thing is. I don't want to. I'll only comment on movies I really love or really hate, and I HATED this movie. endless minutes of running with one-note music droning on and on...bad makeup, bad acting, bad lighting, bad everything. I admire people for trying to make movies, but this one hurt.
There's not enough action or logic to this thing. I know they didn't have any money, but I really think they didn't have a script either. it honestly looks like they looked in the closet and said 'hey look we have a video camera!' and they just pulled it out and started shooting. did they make it up as they went?
Thank god for fast-forward.
28 Days Later... (2002)
of all the zombie films I've seen...
I've been on a cinematic zombie rampage the past few days and I have to say out of all the zombie movies I've seen, this is the best. I know it's not officially a 'zombie' movie but it brings enough freshness to the genre to really make it unpredictable and just plain cool. the only things I didn't like were on some of the action scenes it was a little hard to tell what was going on, but by the end you could figure it out. I've read complaints that the city should have been more destroyed, with bodies everywhere, but if you listen to the commentary, they talk about that and how they just didn't have the money to do it that way.
danny boyle is a genius and I'm glad he decided to do a genre movie. even the fact it's shot on video adds to the creepiness, like you can't really see everything that's going on, and that makes it creepier, sort of like those old 70's horror movies shot on grainy 16mm where you had to peer into the picture to see what was happening..it really heightens the tension.
I loved this movie.
