Bama Rush (2023)

I really liked it!

Seeing a lot of complaints about this one thing in particular and I have a bit of a different take. Yes the director does break the 4th wall and shares some of her story of having alopecia but I added depth to the documentary. Typically we never see the crew or director but the subjects in the doc are interacting with them constantly and that relationship directly effects how they come across on screen, how vulnerable they are etc. The director revealing herself shows her willingness to be vulnerable with the audience and presumably with her subjects, which made the movie feel much more intimate to me. Especially filming in a culture that idolizes femininity and conventional beauty it added another layer to each interaction the director has, knowing that she was not one of them. Overall, I really liked it.

I wish I didn't pay $5.99 to rent this and just waited till it was streaming for free. I can't articulate exactly what I don't like about. The lead actress is good for never acting before. I think maybe it was over hyped so my expectations were pretty high. I know people were mad about the age difference I don't really care about that. I'm all for telling stories even if they are controversial, this was just boring, and I LOVE a good slow burn now and then.

It's working for me. I like it. Episode 4 is my favorite so far, it was strange. I hope the episodes get even weirder as the series progresses. Curious what direction they will take it. Not sure this review makes sense, I'm stoned.

Emily in Paris (2020– )

Disappointed

I had high hopes for this because I really like Lily Collins but I barely made it through the first episode. I knew from the opening scene where Emily runs 5 miles this wasn't for me or relatable. Isn't the girl working a "unrealistic dream job" in fashion kind of cliche? I'd love to see a lead female play something actually interesting. Maybe it's me but marketing and social media jobs aren't intriguing! Based off the first episode all the characters are unlikable. They use the Parisians are rude trope which in my experience is not true! I went to Paris alone and met so many friendly people there. Yes I ran into a rude Uber driver or two but the same goes for where I live (NYC). I don't understand who this show is made for, maybe teen girls? So cringe and boring.

So disappointing. I read the book twice and was so excited for this show. I agree with other reviewers that the first season was watchable, not what I envisioned for the story but I stuck with it. I was hoping for something much darker and the casting of Manx is awful, so cringe. Now I'm watching the second season and it's a complete disaster, they changed so much, it's not scary or thrilling at all, which the book was. I just wish they would stop making my favorite books and comics Joe Hill's other book Locke and Key is on Netflix and sadly also garbage.

Yeah I guess it's that simple, don't waste your time. Unless maybe you are an actor, writer, or director and want examples of what not to do.The acting was bad but I can't even blame them because they didn't have much of a script to work with.
