A Pleasant Laugh
31 December 2020
After having read the many reviews and watched the film, I can conclude that this film is neither a blockbuster nor a total flop. It is just a pleasant laugh. The majority of the cast will be known to many. Joan Collins is of course the best-known name. Guy Siner will be remembered from the classic comedy series 'Allo', and other actors include Martin Kemp, Kym Marsh and Lorna Fitzgerald, fresh from success on the stage, after many years on EastEnders. The Loss Adjuster and central character is Luke Goss, once of Bros fame.

Since 2000 Goss has built up a substantial list of film credits, and in this film, he is the only character who is properly developed. The movies' success is then very much in his hands. His performance is rather mixed, sometimes effective, and funny, but at other times unconvincing. I was quite pleased with the young David Byrne, but all of the other actors play only undeveloped cameo roles. Joan Collins' and Cathy Thyson's cameos were fairly humorous. I liked Guy Siner, and I hope that Lorna Fitzgerald did enough in her first movie to get more film roles. But the other actors were largely forgettable.

The plot of the film is told through a long series of flashbacks. This doesn't really work. The plot is at times difficult to follow. But the film won my attention with the ability to relate to much of the story. Many of us will have met characters or situations from the film in real life, and it is here that much of the humour is based. I would be quite happy to watch it again.

Not an easy watch

A very odd movie. Dennis Quaid is excellent. It is very easy to empathise with his character and believe in him. Some of the other characters also work well, particularly Kim Dickens and the young Maika Monroe. But I found Zac Efron very annoying. In general terms the plot was OK, but the story just kept jumping around and lacked any fluidity. It felt as though it was a long series of loosely connected mini-episodes rather them clean running film.

Poor

Some of the most comically poor acting I have ever seen. They all seem way out of their depth. Its not aided by some quite annoying incidental music.
