Guyane (2016)
Excellent series that deserves a wider audience
Guyane is an excellent 2 season series that would have had a much wider audience if the producers had created subtitles for an non French speaking audience much sooner.
English sub titles only became available for the second series 2 years after release and even then they were low quality subs e.g. People read top to bottom not bottom to top.
Prior reviews criticizing the dislike of the characters are invalid because that is the subject matter, this is not a family soap opera it is a raw and gritty tale about the ruthless pursuit of gold and the lives ruined in the pursuit. If you cannot handle a dark tale then this is not one for you.
The acting was excellent for the main cast and for the most part cast and scenes looked convincing, particularly Vincent and Serra whom both looked as if they had not washed for weeks rather than your typical holly-wood makeup of well manicured actors.
A solid tale and a tragic end for some of the cast, in most instances the situations rang true except for the final episode when Serra did in the final scene which made no sense at all and was out of character for Serra as well as being inconsistent to what he was doing up until that point.
It seemed as if the writers just did not know how to end the series or how to resolve the conflict between Vincent and Serra so they tried to do something unexpected and ended up writing something completely stupid.
Overall a great series worthy of a Netflix release IF and only IF the producers fix the subtitles and provide a different ending one that makes sense for the characters and provides the viewers a more satisfying conclusion after investing time to watch the two seasons.
Last and First Men (2020)
Why not donate an hour of your life to something better?
If you enjoy spending over an hour looking at slow moving black and white images of uninteresting lumps of concrete from various angles with Tilda droning on about a schoolboys wild imagination of a dystopian future that is completely unrelated to the lumps of grey concrete; then shout for joy because this is what you were looking for.
I can only presume that the budget must have been about $10 bucks and they probably spent that on a hamburger lunch for Tilda while conning her into reading lines for an audition which they then used for the audio backdrop.
The lumps of concrete are the sorts of things that you might find in your local park or industrial estate and had no relationship to the narrative, at times they were laughable when the narrative described constructs that reached the outer atmosphere while depicting a lump of concrete that was about 20-30 feet high with clouds over head. Even a basic comprehension of science would be useful prior to embarking on a SciFi project.
It is particularly irksome that wannabe movie makers dare to believe that they can use the SciFi genera as a sand box to practice in, this is a genera that requires far more respect.
Westworld (2016)
Yes Season 3 Is as Bad as they Say
Ignore all of the shill votes because the genuine viewers have spoken season 3 is dreadful, a complete waste of the massive budget used to create it the writers and directors should be ashamed.
* Background noise so loud it frequently drowns out the person speaking, with perfect hearing you need on screen text to understand during some interactions.
* Hyperactive background noise that is often out of context attempting to build excitement for boring uninteresting story line.
* Pointless pursuit of feminine agenda to the detriment of the narrative.
* Narrative seems to be created merely to support pointless action scenes.
* Cheesy dialogue that feels like it came from a 1980's production.
* Actors seem wooden and unconvincing probably because even they did not believe the lines they were delivering.
* Good CGI that was completely wasted on this pile of dross.
It is a tragedy to see this series destroyed by those involved with the creation of season 3 and hopefully the studio execs will understand that it is not that viewers don't appreciate SciFi it is that the viewers don't appreciate script writers and directors of B grade soap operas being used to create SciFi.
Curb Your Enthusiasm (2000)
Used to be Funny
The early seasons of curb used to be amusing tongue in cheek observational humor from a guy who was proudly not politically correct.
Unfortunately now that we have reached season 10 the show has descended into the screaming New York Jew show, what is it about NY Jews that makes then think frenetic screaming is funny?
I can ask that on account of the fact I am Jewish.
Sorry but the constant screaming is not funny its just plain irritating.
The only remaining bright spot is J.B. Smoove who cruises through the episodes like a guy who is passing through and says whatever enters his head with no filters, JB delivers the only laughs as the rest of the cast including Larry are so busy screaming at each other that its almost irrelevant what they are screaming about.
Larry needs to return to his roots with the show content, clean out some of the cast and replace them with a some actual comedians with more diverse range of backgrounds (less screamers more funny people).
The New Pope (2020)
Style over Substance
A confused mess of ideas thrown into a jar and then poured out in no particular order spiced up with salacious dance scenes and nudity.
Malkovich was a unfortunate choice for a lead role as his excruciatingly tedious delivery of lines in everything he does comes across as an actor who has struggled with a very bad stutter and needs to slow down his speech to control the stuttering. His attempts at accents are comical at best and at times just plain cringe-worthy.
Jude Law steals every scene that he is in and his performances are commendable but the story line is little more than a jumble of half baked ideas and detract from what could have been an excellent series.
The series felt as if it had been hastily thrown together as a vehicle for Malkovich's painful display of acting and by wasting episodes on a pope with a speech impediment the remainder of the story felt rushed and lacking substance when the focus finally shifted to Lenny.
One minute Lenny is a self assured conduit to god full of self confidence and dictating to the cardinals and the pope the next he is asking to be ignored due to self doubt and insecurity with insufficient transition to believe the character portrayal.
Brannox quickly becomes subservient to Lenny when with the cardinals but then starts ordering Lenny around and exits the building shortly thereafter to head back home and become an abdicated pope.
Lenny dies after crowd surfing for no explicable reason.
A jumbled mess that would have been far better if Malkovich's character had never been written into the series.
