The Conversation (1974)
Not Sure! Definitely, a second viewing needed.
Not need to check out the reviews for this one I thought having read the write up on the reverse of the DVD case.
This movie sounded like it was right up my street, nominated for The Oscar for Best Movie etc etc.
From the off the scene is set and the feeling is positive, but, alas the movie failed me in a number of areas (it became rather boring!) and before I knew it the z'Z'z'Z's were being pushed out!
I will give the movie a second viewing, but maybe in the Autumn.
The Millionairess (1960)
No, No, No, No, No!
Saw the DVD in a friend's collection and read the back. I like Sophia and Peter and thought this should be a steady movie to watch!
WRONG!
IT LASTED LESS THAN 5 MINUTES.
EVERYTHING ABOUT THE MOVIE IS POOR .
DEFINITELY ONE TO GIVE A MISS.
Meet the Parents (2000)
Watchable!
Not the funniest, but still very watchable!
Put simply, it's a movie to watch on one of those nights when you don't want to get into anything that needs you to concentrate.
A movie you can leave running when you need a pee break knowing that you won't miss anything.
A near miss on the 'Popcorn Awards' folks, scoring a solitary πΏ
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
"He Will Rock You"
Great Casting, Great Music and Great Music Editing.
This is a Fantastic Movie and if you are A fan of 'Queen', then it simply doesn't get better than this!
Rami Malek, is a worthy winner of the Oscar for a male actor in a Leading Role, for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury.
AMP Popcorn Award a big πΏπΏπΏπΏπΏ out of 5.
Fargo (1996)
True Story - My Arse!!
Very disappointed in this movie and I award it a solitary 1 out of a possible 5 on my πΏ award system.
Billed as a being based on a True story, this simply isn't/wasn't so!
A Comedy/Thriller YES, and if that had been written on the DVD case it would have scored higher for sure!
Watch the movie with this in mind and I am sure that once viewed you will agree.
All That Jazz (1979)
OMGπ
Managed the first 15 minutes before it was time to hit the EJECT BUTTON.
As Individuals, we all have to make our own minds up and for me this movie just didn't live up to its Glitzy Title 'All That Jazz'!
πΏ Rating, SORRY, FROM ME ITS -1
Worthy of its Oscar Nomination for Best Movie - NO WAY.
The Sound of Music (1965)
CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN!
OMG, this movie movie never fails to entertain 100%.
2 hours 52 minutes of pure entertainment.
With unbelievable scenery, a great storyline and some never to forget songs this movie is a MUST see!
With 5 Oscars to its name including that of BEST MOVIE, I AM ALSO AWARDING IT MY 5 πΏ AWARD,
ENJOY π
The Missing (2003)
A Good One to Watch
If you like a good Western then "Missing" won't disappoint!
Released in 2003, this modern take of a Western is a very good effort. With a steady storyline and some strong performances by the two lead actors it's well worth getting the popcorn out for!
Field of Dreams (1989)
A True Feel Good Movie
If you are looking for a movie that won't disappoint, make for easy watching on one of those nights when you just don't want to have to think about it to much, then "Field of Dreams" will tick all your boxes.
Was it worthy of an Oscar Nomination for Best Movie, I personally think not, but you really have to make your own mind up on that one!
A very enjoyable movie nonetheless π
Eye for an Eye (1996)
Same Old, Same Old!
Nothing new in this movie. A somewhat predictable scenario but still worth watching. Nothing negative to say about movie either, other than maybe the screenwriters could have beefed it up a little more as it felt more like a movie from the 70's rather than 1996.
The Godfather Part II (1974)
Al Pacino on the money
Awesome Movie.
A must watch.
It's long but it's certainly worth it.
Don't worry if you haven't seen the 'Godfather' either as this can certainly be watched as a standalone movie.
The scene setting, especially when filming the New York takes is very good.
Lo sbarco di Anzio (1968)
ANZIO - A Bloody Story Virtually Left Untold!?
This should have and could have been a very good movie.
Based on fact, that is the Landings at Anzio actually happened and the Germans were actually taken by surprise by the Allied Landing there. That unfortunately is where the connection to this epic battle of WW2 starts and finishes.
The story we have here is a very simple one, that of a War Correspondent and six American Rangers, the only surviving members of 750 that were either KIA or taken prisoner after they had been ambushed by the Germans. The actual story is one of the seven survivors trying to get back to the Beachhead at Anzio after being cutoff behind enemy lines.
Nothing new there RIGHT!
Robert Mitchum turns in a steady performance as the War Correspondent and the other named actors just turn in.
Overall it's not a bad movie, it just didn't deliver what was written on the Can!
Worth watching to make up your own mind.
Gladiator (2000)
'He was a soldier of Rome'
12 Oscar Nominations and 5 Trophies Won, including Best Movie & Best Actor in a Leading Role.
What a sensational movie, the scene setting and cinematography is awesome!
The opening 10 minutes are right on the money, right up there with 'Saving Private Ryan'.
The scene play adapted for the movie is very well written.
This movie does not disappoint and will be watched time and time again.
The Awful Truth (1937)
"Simple Clever Humour"
Cary Grant & Irene Dunne are great in what is a VERY funny 1937 Movie. The supporting cast certainly played their part in making this movie great!
The storyline is punchy as are the many comical one liner exchanges throughout the movie.
A must see movie that will make you laugh time and time again!
Numerous Oscar nominations which included Best Picture, Best Actress in a Leading Role and Best Supporting Actor. Sadly it was only the Oscar for Best Director that was taken home on the night!
We were all left feeling happy and very entertained at the end of "The Awful Truth".
Munich (2005)
"A Reminder, We Do Not Forget or Forgive!"
A great Steven Spielberg effort at recreating the aftermath of the 1972 Munich Olympics Tragedy.
This is a movie that needs to be watched (ie, given your full attention throughout) as there's a lot going on, especially in the first hour of the movie
The casting is/was spot on.
The Script Writing is on the money.
The Oscar nominations the movie received, in my opinion were all justified.
This movie certainly serves to remind the viewing public of the tragic events that occurred in Munich in 1972.
A very good watch, with no popcorn required!
The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)
A MUST SEE MOVIE
This is to put it very simply, 'A Great Movie'.
Worthy of all the Oscar Nominations it received and the 7 Oscars it took home on the night, which included the awards for Best Movie, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor.
A very strong story, which is very much 'En Piste' as much in 2021 as it was at the end of WW2.
Top Hat (1935)
Top Hat & Plenty of Frills
Top Hat didn't disappoint. The Musical Scores and Dance Routines throughout the movie were all fantastically entertaining.
99% of the movie was filmed using Studio Sets and the Scene Setting, Props and Costume Departments were all operating at the very top of their games.
On the downside, I felt the movie was let down slightly by the Script Writers. The story could have/should have been stronger and was probably one of the main reasons it didn't do better at the Oscars having been nominated for Four Oscars which included a nomination for 'Best Movie'.
All said and done Fred & Ginger danced wonderfully and movie was both fun and amusing.
1917 (2019)
What's in a Title?
The first 20 minutes were simply fab. The scene setting and costumes are top notch.
The storyline and the remainder of the movie however is very weak.
The Title '1917' is a TOTAL Miss Match as it caters for a solitary 24 hour period in what was surely ONE HELL OF A YEAR!?
Just look at what took place during the Battle of Cambrai which kicked off on the 20th November 1917.
Was '1917' worthy of a Best Movie nomination, I personally think not.
