The Portal (2019)
A film about stillness that cannot sit still - preaching and carrying on to no end and quite confusing
We were excited about the concept but the trailer does not portray the film. We feel we were sold a bag of goods. Everything about promotions and the lead up were great and when we went to see it with many of our meditation friends and yoga experts, all were very disappointed and confused. The film did the opposite of what we hoped and what it was being marketed as. Stories from all walks of life are interesting but this film was all over the place, it made no sense, the premise about if the whole world meditating is a pipe dream but maybe it is a doable thing, but not with this group. Not at all. We all left disappointed beyond belief. Anything claiming to save the world, or be the best ever next thing - don't walk away, run. It left us confused, the filmmakers were indirect and the product itself is literally all over the place in a not helpful way. We cannot in good faith recommend this to anyone, especially those in the health and wellness and yoga and meditation fields. It seemed quite amateurish to be perfectly honest and they could have done a better job at keeping the audience in the supposed theme of the film - cool, calm, collected and interested. In stead, we left confused, storylines all over the place, through lines that didn't make sense or connect until later, so then you have a headache trying to understand what in the world you just experienced. It could have been great but alas, maybe their next film will be better but we have no plans to see it. Then we heard and read up on some of the filmmakers and there have been reports that confirmed our feelings. We left stressed out and had to see another film and go to an evening yoga and meditation class just to recenter ourselves! We wish them well it was a hard effort but the film does not answer its own question nor complete the mission at all. Sad to say.
Half Empty (2006)
Brilliant, Innovative, Beautiful, Touching and completely Hilarious
this film explores if not creates a whole new genre with perfect imperfection --- hilarity, truth, fun, talent and circumstance that make for MAGIC.
from creative musical numbers to off the cuff comedy that incorporates actors at their very best, if i hadn't have known better, i would have thought there was an elaborate script here.
what you get: a mighty wind meets conversations with god meets something so fresh and new and delightful that it becomes it's own entity.
peters and fell both give stellar performances and reel you in immediately. the rest of the cast is also phenomenal. there are no small parts....... only small actors, and everyone involved here should be patted on the back, taken out to dinner and be considered for an Oscar.
well done!
