2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
The movie that pioneered Sci-Fi movie making
If it wasn't for 2001: A Space Odyssey, I doubt that Sci-Fi movie making would be as good as it is now. 2001: A Space Odyssey is such a fascinating experience and there is a lot to appreciate with it.
Most movies from the 60s are usually most likely to age poorly due to outdated special effects and poor editing, but 2001 manages to not be like that at all, and for a movie with $10.5 million as the budget, the cinematography and special effects are visually stunning and are some of the best I have ever seen for a movie, it still holds up, even after 53 years later.
The story may seem hard to explain, but it's actually quite simple; it starts out with The Dawn of Man, involving the apes discovering a monolith, and then they realise that they could use their tools as weapons, then it cuts to in the future where everyone is learning to do everything that were normally did on earth, but in space. HAL9000 is also a good villain and is a great representation to how technology could possibly take over humans. The final 20 minutes involves Dave heading into a stargate, and then he arrives in a room, he starts to get older and older, and then the monolith appears again, with him holding his hand to the monolith, and then he gets rebirthed into a star child and floats in space looking down at earth.
The way that the movie changes perspectives is very interesting, as the start of the movie with the apes represents old life (hence why the scene is called The Dawn of Man), and the final shot with the Star Child represents new life.
The musical score is also very good too, the usage of many of the classical songs here are actually quite fitting, most notably with the usage of "Also Sprach Zarathustra" on the opening scene with the sun rising over earth, the ape scene where he starts using a bone as a weapon, and the ending involving Dave being rebirthed into a Star Child.
If there is one thing I don't like, it may be the slow pacing. Granted, there are movies, TV shows and video games that have used slow pacing before, but to me, 2001 is bit too slow paced, which can often make me bored with the movie halfway through and only skip to the most noteworthy moments in the movie. But even then, I was still satisfied with what was going on in the movie despite the slow pacing.
2001: A Space Odyssey is probably one of the most influential movies of all time and even for 1968, it still looks absolutely beautiful.
Ice Age: Collision Course (2016)
The death-knell of a once great franchise
Ice Age was initially was one of my favourite movie franchises, I loved very single movie and they remain as one of my favourite animated movies of all time, I even liked the fourth one too. This movie, however, made me change my opinion on the franchise.
The first four movies were great because they cared about telling a story that both adults and kids can find funny and enjoyable, they weren't perfect, but they did their jobs well, this movie, on the other hand, does not do it well at all. It is very unoriginal and is essentially the exact same concept at The Meltdown and Continental Drift, with the only difference being that the herd has to stop a collision course form destroying the earth.
All of the characters have all had their personalities changed too, with Manny becoming overly protective and very grumpy, Sid is now even more stupider than before, and Scrat (despite not being flanderized) essentially becomes the antagonist of the film as he causes nearly ever single problem that the main characters have to deal with! Granted, he did cause the disaster in Continental Drift as well, but it was no where near as bad as what he did here.
The jokes and attempts at humour are all juvenile and absolutely stupid, sometimes, they even throw in random pop culture references that are out of place and are undeserving to be there, including an unnecessary 2001: A Space Odyssey reference where Scrat gets his acorn, starts stepping foot on the asteroid (which I guess was also supposed to parody the moon landing of 1969?) and puts his acorn into the asteroid, it even plays the theme song from 2001: A Space Odyssey while it happens.
Overall, Ice Age: Collision Course is an insult to the franchise, is an insult to Blue Sky, is an insult to 20th Century Fox, is an insult to parents, is an insult to children, is an insult to Ice Age and Blue Sky fans, and is an insult to me.
The Simpsons: Homer Simpson in: 'Kidney Trouble' (1998)
Jerkass Homer at his finest!
How the hell is Homer making his father loose his kidneys and spending half of the episode trying to not save him supposed to be funny? It's not! It makes Homer this selfish, arrogant and sociopathic jerk who has no empathy towards anyone but himself!
Even if you ignore the atrocious plot, there aren't even that many funny jokes here, which sucks even harder because comedy is like this show's bread and butter.
One of the worst episodes of the "Golden Age" and one of the worst episodes of the entire series, do not watch this one, it sucks.
Family Guy: You Can't Handle the Booth (2019)
Really? This is the worst episode?
I've seen so much negativity thrown towards this episode, many people consider it the worst episode and even has 3.8 rating, and to that I say, why?
I honestly really liked this episode, it has quite an interesting concept about the Family doing a DVD commentary on an episode of their series.
The episode does have it's flaws, such as the fact that Lois screams non-stop, the fact they did a commentary on an episode that has never been aired and also the fact that it is kind of confusing to focus on both the commentary and the episode itself at the same time.
The commentary plot kind of gets silly and nonsensical, but that's why I loved it! It is supposed to be a parody on the wackiness of DVD commentaries.
The episode even had some funny moments. One moment I thought was funny was when Lois tried to call FOX or Disney Payroll but was forced to hold, and then the theme song from The Simpsons plays while the phone repeatedly says "Thank you for continuing to hold". And another moment I thought was funny was when Peter sang "Half way down the stairs" from The Muppet Show, especially when Lois says that no one would get the joke but then Sarah Paulson says that she knows the song, which made the moment way more funnier.
Honestly, I don't think this episode is as bad as everyone says it is, true, it may not be a perfect episode, but Family Guy has done so much worse than this!
Family Guy: Herpe, the Love Sore (2014)
Wow, what a horrible episode!
Brian was just unlikable here! He gives Stewie herpes after being "Blood Brothers" with him, and he treats it like it's no big deal.
Most of the jokes here were unfunny and were disgusting, including the scene where Brian shows Stewie his herpes and the cutaway that involves Stewie as an adult doing a job interview while he still has herpes.
The subplot wasn't any better either, Peter, Quagmire and Joe arrive at The Drunken Clam to find their usual booth taken by three tough guys, and they try to take it back. It wasn't awful like the main plot is, but it is still rather uninteresting.
The only parts I thought was remotely enjoyable was the beginning scene where the Family watches VH1's Behind the Music which features Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem and the scene where Stewie calls up Handy Manny.
It is honestly shocking to see how Family Guy has lowered themselves to this, do NOT watch this episode!
The Simpsons: Gump Roast (2002)
Bland, but not the worst...
This episode was mostly received negatively by fans and critics, mainly because it is a clip show. Okay, most Simpsons clips shows are pretty bland, I get it, but a 5.4? It really wasn't that bad compared to "All Singing, All Dancing" or "Another Simpsons Clip Show" as both of those clip shows were extremely mediocre.
This episode does not follow the cliche family sitting together thinking about memories in living room or kitchen and tries to create a different plot of everyone celebrating Homer Simpson for his achievements.
I'd have to admit that having Kang and Kodos here kind of ruined the episode as it makes it non-canon, which destroys the purpose of clip shows.
One change they made to one of the clips that I don't like is that they changed Maggie's voice at the part where she says "Daddy", the new voice that was given here doesn't sound as cute as the original.
The best part of the episode by far is the "They'll Never Stop the Simpsons" song, it recaps on all the big moments of the series as well as making fun of ridiculous future plots such as Marge becoming a robot for example, heck, there was even a picture of Homer jumping the shark which shows awareness that the series will eventually jump the shark (again).
Overall, this episode was a little bit dull but it doesn't deserve a lower rating than actual bad episodes of the show.
The Simpsons: Homer vs. Dignity (2000)
Unpopular opinion: This is a great episode
I know a lot of people hate this episode mainly due to the infamous panda scene (I won't exactly go in detail on what happened because it is rather unpleasant), but I personally didn't think the episode was actually that bad.
The plot goes is that Homer is starting to lose a lot of money, and in order to get more money, he does some devious jobs for Mr. Burns.
I gotta say that many of the scenes here were actually pretty funny, the part where Homer throws pudding into Lenny's eye was easily one of the best moments of the series and the scene where Homer eats the Spider-Man comic was so funny I nearly died of laughter while watching it.
Despite the fact I like this episode, I gotta say that the infamous panda scene was extremely disturbing and made me feel bad for Homer, it felt like a Family Guy joke than a Simpsons joke. The ending was also quite bad too as it involves Mr. Burns throwing fish guts on everyone and then the seagulls attack the town of Springfield, it felt like an awful way to end the episode.
Overall, I actually really liked this episode aside from the disturbing panda scene.
The Simpsons: Lisa's Pony (1991)
One of my favourites!
This episode of The Simpsons has always been up there with one my favourites of The Simpsons, I like the message that this episode delivers on how a parent's love for their child will make them do anything they can, even if it kills them.
Many of the scenes in this episode were funny such as Bart impersonating Principal Skinner, the kid singing "My dingaling!" and Homer ending up falling asleep at random occasions due to his exhaustion. There were also funny parodies of movies here, such as the part where Lisa finds her horse next to her in bed much like the scene from The GodFather, and the beginning which is a literal parody of the Dawn of Man scene from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Some scenes were also emotional such as the parts where Lisa has to make the decision to either keep the pony or to give up the pony, she decides to give up the pony mainly because as much as she cares for the pony, she still cares very much for her father.
This episode is an absolute classic and a must-watch for Season 3 of The Simpsons.
The Simpsons: Co-Dependent's Day (2004)
One of the worst episodes of Season 15
The subplot of Bart and Lisa complaining about the Cosmic Wars movies was great, I like how it takes stabs at the Star Wars prequel trilogy.
The main plot absolutely sucks, the idea of Homer and Marge both getting addicted to drinking sounds like a decent idea for an episode, but the execution is abysmal. The one thing that made me despise this episode though is the fact that Homer FRAMES HIS OWN WIFE FOR DRUNK DRIVING AFTER HE CRASHES THE CAR WHILE DRUNK IN ONE SCENE! And to make matter's worse? Homer doesn't get any comeuppance for it.
Such a terrible episode from Season 15, I highly recommend you do not watch this one.
The Simpsons: The Boys of Bummer (2007)
Easily the worst episode of the entire series behind Lisa Goes Gaga
To sum the plot up, Bart messes up a football game and the entire town starts to hate him, they bully and torment him, to the point where they encourage him to commit suicide!
I get that The Simpsons wanted criticize America as they care a bit too much about football, but this went WAY too far! Who exactly thought "Yeah, this is a good idea for an episode, Bart get bullied over a football game to the point where he commits suicide is super funny!". Even after Bart attempts suicide, the town still bully him by chanting "Bart Sucks"!
The subplot with Homer as a mattress salesman was kind of dull too but it was far better than the main plot itself.
Is there anything I like in this episode? The ending where Milhouse and Bart discuss about the game was quite funny and the part where Abe Simpson says "You Stink La Boot!" to Joe La Boot was carthardic as hell.
Overall, this episode despised this episode so much and I consider the absolute worst episode of the entire series behind Lisa Goes Gaga.
