Scream (2022)
A dissapointing revival film for a franchise that's been losing steam
This review contains minor spoilers
Scream 2022 Movie Review
By: "Cyranical" Let's get it!!!
Have you been a fan of a slasher franchise so much that you always scroll through the internet for news about it? Were you disappointed because you found out one of its rival franchises got a new film before it? Were you overjoyed when it was finally announced that the franchise was getting revived after such a long time after its dear creator passed away a long time ago? Did you continuously keep up with the leaks and news about the upcoming movie of the said franchise? Only to be disappointed and left with an empty heart after watching the new film, because it could have been so much more. Don't worry my comrade I am in the same boat as you, as I have gone through this type of pain and disappointment in my most recent times. What I am not and I am just being overly dramatic as a hardcore slasher fan. Well, I beg to differ, "What, am I even being overly dramatic about?" "Was the end result really as bad to warrant what I am going through right now?" I am glad you asked. Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Cyranical, and welcome back to Cyranical Reviews, as today in celebration of my comeback I will be reviewing the highly anticipated fifth installment of the Scream franchise, you guessed it right, "This is Cyranical's Scream 2022 movie review, Let's Get It!!!!"
Scream 2022 is the long-awaited fifth installment in the coveted franchise. It serves as a dedication film towards the late legend Wes Craven. It's also the direct relaunch of the franchise, immediately following the events of the fourth film. The Major trio from the past films returns, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, along with Neve Campbell to reprise their roles as Sidney Prescott; Gale Weathers; and Sheriff Dewey. The movie takes place 25 years after the original Woodsboro murders, as the torch is passed down to two new Ghostfaces with different ideals.
The story takes place in the town of Woodsboro 25 years after the Billy Loomis and Stu incident, now the place is glorified thanks to the contribution of Gale Weather's news reports, books; and of course the stab franchise; which is just a meta self-aware parodied version of the Scream franchise within its own film. The main characters this time around are the Carpenter sisters one is Tara who was the first victim of the new Ghostface's, along with Sam the brand new final girl that is revealed to be the daughter of Billy Loomis. The story practically goes like this, Sam's sister Tara is attacked by the new Ghostface, but she miraculously survives getting hospitalized in the process; there she is visited by Sam her sister that ran away from home due to some parental conflicts; she apologizes to Tara; she also remarks that she is the daughter of Billy Loomis the famed serial killer from 25 years ago. Her sister declines her apology and dismisses her, she then runs into her boyfriend Richie who suspiciously arrives at the perfect time to console her. Following this, it is revealed that Dewey and Gale have split up from each other; the former living in Woodsboro as a retired sheriff; while the latter's career has taken off in New York where she now has her very own talk show. Dewey is seen reminiscing about his times with Gale when he is interrupted by Sam and Richie hoping to find out more information along with some tips on how to catch the new Ghostface killer; after some convincing Dewey gives them some advice; even later helping them interrogate the culprits who are of course Sam's friends; after warning Sidney Prescott not to get involved with the incident. The three-plus both Sidney and Gale then get entangled in a lie-driven, self-aware; movie cliched; mystery-thriller investigation that leads them to Ghostface's tracks.
Pros:
-Uses the same formula as the original films, those being that it is a "whodunit" flick mixed in with some dark comedy; self-aware humor; and cliched movie tropes and rules
-Has a unique idea of satirizing the trend of reboots, and legacy sequels; plus requels
-Tackles the concept of fandom culture
-Has the same meta-horror jokes that we know and love the franchise for
-The return of the original trio of main characters helps the movie stand on its own feet
-Gory, bloody kills along with some decent practical effects and CGI
Cons:
-The film has bad writing, dialogue, and characters; it legit feels like it was written by a boomer who's trying to act hip claiming to know what the current culture is; what we get is super cringe-worthy dialogue and extremely basic thrash worthy characters that not only have any personality nor redeeming qualities except for the fact that they are recycled versions of original characters such as Mindy serving as Randy from the first two movies. Hell, these characters have no personalities whatsoever, and are extremely annoying to boot; fun fact I did not remember any of their names; so I had to look up the cast on google to make sure that I do.
-Fails to execute its new concepts and ends up just being too self-aware and cliched to the point of being ridiculously cringe
-The final girl has a weak performance, there was actually a moment where I was questioning if she was reading of something from a teleprompter in the hospital scene where she talks to Gale after Dewey's passing; since it looks like her eyes were looking elsewhere and couldn't stay focused; additionally she looks extremely nervous plus stiff in most scenes of the film.
-There is not a new score that's worth remembering like from the old movies
-Feels like it takes too much after scream 4 which is the worst of the franchise after part 3, so it already doesn't look good for one chief.
-It is also too predictable in terms of kills and plot twists, like it was super obvious that Richie was the killer as he was randomly appearing on murder scenes; and not being fatally wounded in any of them; sorta like he was being protected by the killer in some way; if you paid close enough attention
-Is a disappointment overall as a revival movie for the franchise
-Ends up being too meta, and over the top; rather than fun; entertaining, and unique like its predecessors
-Drags out its runtime to almost two hours with random worthless scenes about death fodder characters that no one really cares about.
Overall Scream 2022 is a disappointing fifth installment to one of the most popular and prominent franchises in horror history, considering the hype and multiple leaks that it was getting; along with its release date constantly being rescheduled. It mainly suffers from being derivative from Scream 4, being too self-aware and riddled with slasher movie cliches and rules; being too meta; bad writing; horrendous characters; cringe dialogue that feels like it was written by a conservative white man in his 50 to 60's trying to appeal to teenagers. Plenty more issues and weaknesses of this film include being unable to capitalize on its new concepts such as properly addressing fandom culture and using requel rules and cliches to it's advantage rather than to its demise like it ended up doing; plus dragged out runtime and messy pacing due to random scenes of boring and annoying characters. Additionally, it was too predictable with its twists and kill timing, that's why I was able to properly guess when someone was going to die every single time before the kill happened; furthermore, deduce that Richie was the killer thanks to his suspicious activity and inconsistency; such as arriving at the hospital saying she was called by Sam even though the said character was instead trying to reach Tara; additionally, he was also an annoying character tied with really bad dialogue. Honestly, if you want to watch a Scream movie, or is just someone looking for a slasher or a good horror movie to binge-watch then Scream 2022 is not for you, I recommend you just revisit the first two films of the franchise then move on to something else entirely when you're done. In conclusion Scream 2022, otherwise known as the fifth highly anticipated installment of this franchise was a disappointment for me; it definitely did not live up to its hype; therefore warranting a 6/10 for its overall movie rating. This has been Cyranical, and I'm back to reviewing movies and anime baby, Thanks for reading this review, for everyone thinking I was dead, no I'm not I simply took a break from doing reviews for a while; since I was busy with school when I did become from my academic responsibilities personal stuff that had to be immediately addressed took place. I did get a semester break though which I used to rejuvenate myself from my burn-out and fatigue, I know I should be resting right now; but I decided that, "Hey I've been gone for a while, let me do a quick movie review of Scream 2022 because I just finished watching it; so everyone can have a wonderful treat; since my second semester is about to start and I will be extremely occupied once again" . Anyway that's pretty much the update for me. Once again thanks for reading my latest movie review, this has been Cyranical from Cyranical reviews, and I'm gone, "Peace out."
Ted (2012)
A family Guyesh movie with a predictable plot, and Mcfarlane's signiture humor
"Ted Movie review by Cyranical"
John Bennett is a kid that everyone in his entire neighborhood hates, he strives to have friends but is unable to make them. On christmas his parents give him a Teddy bear that he calls Ted, due to his lonely and ankward nature this Teddy bear serves as his best friend; he also constantly wishes that his friend becomes real. One day his wish comes true and Ted comes alive, the two then become inseperable friends from then and out. 35 years later they live in the same apartment and are still on good terms with each other, but this time with a catch John now has a girlfriend; a office worker that goes by the name of Lori. Lori hates Ted because she thinks that it causes her boyfriend's life to be immature and stale, this prompts her to give him an ultimatum; that being he has to choose between her or his best friend.
Pros:
-Can sometimes be funny and enjoyable
-Great performances from the main leads
-Has the ability to shift the mood to it's favor
Cons:
-Family Guy humor consisting of shit, fart, racist, nudity, profanity, drug usage and homophobic jokes plus outdated pop culture references, oh and some jokes that just revolve around random stupidity as well
-Stereotypical characters and execution
-Plot is way too straightforward and predictable
-Has moments where it legit makes you cringe and makes you pause the movie
-Is not consistently funny enough
-Weird soundtrack
Overall Ted is a movie best watched when you and your friend are drunk over at your mom's house, or when you just want some quick laughs. It legitemelety feels like live action family guy, except Peter is now a talking Teddy bear. It is a movie about Immatury and scatological humor so your enjoyment of it will depend on if you like it or not, to top it all off it is also not consistently funny enough; sometimes cringe and stupid; in addition to that it has a predictable plus basic plot. I would only recommend this movie if you are a fan of Sett Macfarlane's shows and works. I give Ted a 6/10 for my overall movie rating, this has been Cyranical signing off.
Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)
Halloween 4: The Return Of Michael Myers" brings the Halloween franchise back to its roots.
"Halloween 4 The Return Of Michael Myers" is the fourth installment in the Halloween franchise. After director John Carpenter's attempt to make the franchise into a holiday theme anthology film series backfired, producer Moustapha Akkad decided to take the franchise back to its roots and make the fourth installment all about Michael Myers again. The fourth movie utilizes old tricks and formulas in order to bring back the Halloween feel into this movie. Its works hook line and sinker and Halloween 4 is not only one of the best films in the franchise it is also downright disturbing.
Set in the fictional town of Haddonfield Illinois where ten years ago Michael Myers -George P. Wilbur terrorized the small town in search of his sister Laurie Strode- Jamie Lee Curtis, the night of the tragedy ended with Laurie being rescued and Michael presumed burned to death. A decade after the gruesome events Michael Myers suddenly comes back to life after his ten year coma while being transported to a sanitarium, while making his way to Haddonfield to continue his bidding long time nemesis and his former psychiatrist Dr. Sam Loomis- Donald Pleasance tries to stop him at a gas station but fails miserably. When Michael arrives at his hometown he finds out that his sister Laurie Strode died in a car crash, but she apparently has a young daughter named Jamie Lloyd- Danielle Harris who is living with the Carruther family and her foster sister Rachel Carruther- Ellie Cornell. Now since Michael knows that Jamie is family he then sets his eyes on her, and will stop at nothing in his way to eradicate his niece.
Dr. Sam Loomis is outstandingly played by Donald Pleasance, he's a natural in this role, by this point in the franchise he's practically became Sam Loomis himself. The character's psyche is between the edge madness and normality, Pleasance portrays that part of the character really well. His acting nails the psychological aspect of the character well. Ellie Cornell does a decent job of portraying Rachel Jamie's poster sister, her character has a strong bond with Jamie, Cornell does a nice job of showing that her character really cares about her poster sister and treats her no less than a real one, she also does a great job as a pseudo final girl for the film, utilizing the clichés of that horror franchise she's managed to make her character relatable and lovable. Danielle Harries keeps up with the rest of the cast despite being on her first role along with a set of veteran actors like Donald Pleasance, she makes the audience care for her and want to see her character survive till the very end, with her role as Jamie being reprised in Halloween 5 and appearing in Rob Zombie's halloween remakes her face has become one of the most beloved characters in this franchise, she is definitely one of the better child actresses out there. George P. Wilbur is one of the best Michael Myer's out there, his portrayal of the character made fans cower in fear, he portrayed Michael as he should be portrayed a killing machine with no emotions who stops at nothing to achieve his goals, on top of that his body and figure made the character even more terrifying. Sadly enough Beua Starr, Kathleen Kinmont and Sasha Jenson portrayal of their minor roles did not hold a candle to the rest of the cast.
Production rushed filming for this fourth installment of the franchise as a result the mask does not fit Michael instead it ends up coming off as a hindrance throughout the film since the mask looks too goofy for a character like Michael Myers. The gore and practical effects were turned down for the kills in fear of the movie getting axed by the MPAA, it's a shame that the end product are either off screen deaths or watered down kills. The movie is good as a whole, but it feels like a remake of the original 1978 Halloween film, since it has the same tone and atmosphere, follows the same formula, utilizes the same troupes and clichés of the genre and doesn't change anything from the previous films in the franchise recipe wise. Despite a couple of production issues and flaws, there are still a lot of good points about this movie. The cinematography and lighting really compliments the films dark tone and atmosphere, it gives the viewer a sense of paranoia and makes them feel like nothing will go right for the main characters of the film. The pacing is really good for this film as well, the events and the transitions don't feel rushed, and that makes the story flow really nicely throughout the film. The score is always great since John Carpenter never disappoints with his classic Halloween score, the score highlights the dark tone of the film, and makes the audience feel like they are in the character's shoes since it matches perfectly with what is displayed on screen and the film as a whole.
Despite this being a cookie cutter slasher film it actually has a moral lesson. That moral lesson being that family members even if they're your poster family must always care and be there for each other's side, since they're the only ones who can be there for them during their times of need. Sometimes even horror movies have beautiful lessons and morals, that's why it's important to never judge a film by its genre alone.
This film is a R-rating despite the gore being nonexistent which is disappointing in its own right, since it might put off some long time fans of the horror genre. This film is only suitable for adults and people over 18 according to its MPAA rating. The audience for this movie are most likely going to be horror fanatics only since this film was made in 1988 which is a really long time ago. Long time fans of the horror genre will love this film, but the new generation sadly won't. The average movie watcher should not let those factors get to them though if they're looking for a good horror movie, since this film is still fantastic and scary in its own right.
Scale of 1-10:
8/10
The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020)
The long anticipated sequal to the fantastic Babysitter movie
This review contains spoilers.
Babysitter Killer Queen is the long awaited sequal to the horror comedy film The Babysitter way back from 2017, this one is a little bit more focused on the comedy side than the horror side. It tells the story of Cole a couple years later being labeled as a crazy kid because police did not find evidence about the incident 2 years ago, the only person that talks to him normally is Melanie but she denies all the killings and kinda just wants to forget about them, when his parents decide to take him to a psychological highschool he takes up Melanie's offer of going away to the lake for a week with her and her friends only to find out that the cult that he killed back then are back for his blood. Now I don't think this sequal is as good as the original, but I don't think the film is bad in its own right, it does have a lot more comedy than horror tho, the kills are still gory, the references, funny humor and the elements that made the first movie great are still here. I didn't really like the Melanie twist, it was just so out of place for me that she suddenly is a part of the cult and it kinda threw me off, and the ending I still don't know if I like it, we get Bee back and she apparently set up everything so Phoebe can be safe, and everything looks good, now I think there might be a sequal, but I personally think that this a good enough place to wrap up this franchise, if they make a sequal it has to be really creative since they killed off the favorite characters from the previous movies, they might even go for satan is going after Cole, even tho that kinda feels too extreme, but hell this entire franchise is crazy. The pacing felt a little bit rushed to me, since the plot conveniences just progressed the story really fast, it felt like everything that needed to happen just happened, like I don't actually think grooming Cole to get cornered again is that easy, but hey they made it happen I guess.
Pros:
-Still funny, gory and a lot of great pop culture references
-Returning characters made the movie great
-We get to see what happens if the ritual is completed and that was kinda epic if only they had the blood of the innocent
-Samara Weaving returns at the end as Bee
-Very self aware
-Its influence is in full swing
-Very entertaining
Cons:
-Too much plot convenience
-The ending and the Melanie twist are still meh for me
-Pacing wasn't great
-First part of the movie was lame as hell
Overall Babysitter Killer Queen is a pretty decent sequal, I still think it relies way too much on plot convenience, since without it doesn't get going, but it does maintain the humor and the other elements that made the first one great, while being inferior to it unfortunately. This film was also really enjoyable and funny to watch, and I would recommend it to horror fans out there. Imma give Babysitter Killer Queen a 7/10 for its overall movie rating.
Death Note - Desu nôto: Light Up the New World (2016)
A Unfortunate Last Outing For The Live Action Death Note Movie Franchise
Death Note Light Up The World is the final movie in the Death Note franchise, it was a pretty average movie, it would have been better if the plot was executed better, and was less convoluted, this movie also has a twist that you can miss if you weren't paying attention enough. I personally just realized it at the ending before the reveal, since I remembered the opening where Mishima was writing in his Death Note. The story is also incomplete and has no sequal, plus like it's predecessors in this live action franchise there are adjustments to the story. For example, Amane Misa is still alive in this movie, and the third film was ignored since they didn't introduce Near in this one, we have a different L succesor Ryuzaki, whose real name is also not Nate River. The acting was pretty great, plus the movie was pretty enjoyable, but it is wasted potential, had they have executed the story a little bit more, and personally the characters relied way too much on technology, Shien is a freaking cyber terrorist for christ sake, and Ryuzaki in the end, ends up using the anti survellance hack that Shien uses. The plot also feels way too fast paced imo, it was a shame since this movie could have been better honestly.
Pros:
-Great Acting
-Has a twist that can be confirmed in the beginning
-Changes the story like the previous films before it in this franchise
-Is a lot more violent
-Has a new plot and new rule about the death note where there are six holders now, and the Shinigami king apparently looks up to Kira and thats why the Shinigamis launch Death Notes in the human world, which I thought was a pretty cold concept, since Kira does seem more of a Death God than most Shinigamis according to Ryuk.
Cons:
-Plot is convulated
-Exposition is bad
-Some characters lack development
-Has no sequal so we don't know what happens in the conclusion for this live action Death Note movie franchise
-Characters rely way too much on technology
-Recycles the same thing that they did in part two where the name is written in the notebook earlier, so they can live on and contribute their plot purposes, I wasn't really a fan of this in general, and I personally don't think that it's very L like.
-Pacing is rushed
Overall Death Note Light Up The New World is a pretty good film despite it's many flaws, but it ends up being wasted potential as these flaws prove to be detrimental to the film in the long run, it had a pretty unique plot, but it ends up being executed poorly making the plot feel convolated, and some characters lack in development, it also uses tricks it has used before from previous films, so it was really a shame. I did enjoy this movie, but I won't recommend it to everyone as it has many problems and has a pretty long runtime, so overall it isn't worth watching. I don't recommend watching this movie franchise as well, because the final film still doesn't have a definitive ending for this new death note universe, stick to the anime and manga death note fans, anyway it gets a 7/10 for me unfortunately.
L: Change the World (2008)
A fun L spinoff that deviates from the anime and manga
Death Note 3 L Change the New World is a spin-off movie about L's last days, he spents it by solving a case about crazy scientists trying to infect the world with a virus that instantly kills people. This is the third movie in the death note movie franchise. It was a pretty good movie, we got some more character development from L, we also got info on Near's origination in the movie franchise. Now even tho this is a spin-off movie with a pretty generic plot about scientist trying to wipe out humanity with a virus, there is still a lot of fun to be had with this movie, the child actor for Maki was also great in her role, I can't say the same for the kid playing near tho, as he wasn't nearly as good.
Pros:
-Is a fun spinoff
-L gets more character development
-Great Maki child actress
Cons:
-Generic plot
-Near child actor is terrible
-Plot inconveniences like everyone except Dr Mikiko doesn't get infected instantly, and the other guy does and instanly dies, oh and L is apparently immune to the virus like come on, also there's another one the FBI agent suddenly appears out of nowhere in the secret passageway of L's station, it's like this man knew that they would be in trouble and go through this specific pathway, so he snuck in here and waited for them
-FBI sideplot
Overall L Change The New World is a great spinoff movie in the Death Note movie Franchise, it was really fun, we got a lot more great L action, as an L fan myself thats fantastic for me. Near's character was also used differently in this movie, and he actually contributed a lot even as a child. This is probably one of the best movies in this franchise despite being a spin-off which says a lot about this movie franchise. I give this movie a 8/10, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I would recommend it to L fans as well.
Death Note - Desu nôto: The Last Name (2006)
The ending of a decent Death Note film adaptation
Death Note 2 The last name is the continuation of the live action movie tackling the story of the manga and anime of the same name. It tells the other half of the story of Death Note starting from when Amane Misa gets her own death note and arranges to find Kira, until the end, but with a slight twist as in this movie L triumphs over Light by sacrificing his life in order to expose him. This pretty much has the same tone of the original movie, it even has the same rushed facing as the original, and fortunately I don't think this movie is bad, but it's not good either, it's just decent, it's not good it's not that bad imo.
Pros:
-Follows directly from the first films events and adds a twist of events like the original
-Has a different ending than the anime and the manga
-Near and that entire plotline is not introduced
-L wins, let's celebrate L fans
-Ending song bangs
Cons:
-Amane Misa is still alive for potential sequals, mainly just for light up the new world lol
-Still some shaky acting
-Light does not like a college student, dude looks like he's in his 30's, well it is what it is, its the same with the first one as well I just forgot to put it in
-Still has that same fast pacing from the original film
Overall Death Note 2 The last name is a decent enough continuation from the first film, but I have to give it a 6, since I'm not a fan of Amane Misa still being there till the end of whatever happens in future films. I prefer the first one to this as well imo. I would also not recommend this movie for people as well, unless you watched the original and want to see the continuation then go ahead, but besides that there are better movies out there, this one barely got a 6 for me, stick with anime and the manga dudes it's much better. I will continue watching and reviewing the movie franchise of death note since I'm curious about Light up the New World, so stay tuned for more reviews.
Death Note: Desu nôto (2006)
The start of a film series portraying the story of the death note anime and manga.
Death note 2006 is a live action japanese movie based on the manga and anime of the same name. It tells the story of college student light Yagami who finds a death note and uses it to try and become the god of the new world, and his first confrontation with L. This movie is decent. It doesn't copy the original straight up and has a couple of twists, some of them are Naomi bearing witness to his fiancee's death, and L taunting Light more than usual, this movie is 2 hours long and has a continuation with a different ending than the anime so that's very interesting. The movie goes for some ballsy decisions and some of them pay off. I personally prefer Naomi having a bigger role in this than in the anime, where she got tricked by Light, nevertheless the live action death note movies separate themselves from the nime, and part one of it makes no difference.
PROS:
-Still has the same elements and charms that the original death note has
-Good soundtrack at the ending credits
-CGI Ryuk actually doesn't look that bad
-L seems to be more cunning in this version
-Makes some new decisions and outcomes that set it apart from the anime
CONS:
-Facing is a little bit fast for me
-L and Light don't get that same battle of wits in this movie, since the Naomi plot kinda sidelines, that maybe more of that in part 2 hopefully
-Found the acting shaky in some parts
-Doesn't fully explain certain characters plans which hinders their effects to the viewers unlike in the anime, an example of this is Light in the end of the movie.
Overall Death Note 1 is a decent enough live action film that makes new decisions and outcomes to separate itself from the anime, while also staying true to the characters, the story and their actions, if you're a fan of Death note then give death note 1 and its sequals a chance, it's certainly better than the netflix film. I give this film a 7/10 for my personal enjoyment, since personally at the start I was very curious on how they will execute the plot and the characters in a live action film, and so far its decent enough. Imma watch the sequals, since I need to see, plus the second movie has all the exciting stuff.
Doctor Sleep (2019)
An exeptional follow-up to a cult classic
Doctor Sleep is the next chapter in the horrifying The Shining universe, based on the novel by Stephen King. It tells the story of Danny Torrence many years later, he is now an alcoholic and is still traumatized by the past events, he doesn't use his shining anymore, and he's trying to recover from being an alcoholic, 8 years later he succeds and meets a young Abra who has interfered with the work of an evil cult, that kills kids with the shining ability in order to try and make themselves immortal, he must now help keep her safe against the cult. Now before I get started, I have watched the director's cut of the film, and the difference between it is that it's 3 hours and 17 seconds, while the threatrical cut is only 2 hours and 32 minutes. I think this might be the better version as the threatrical cut has cut some parts, and it may have missed a couple of details here and there, but the director's cut is this full on everything version, then again I have not seen the threatrical cut, so there's that, but honestly I don't think it matters which version you have seen that much. As they both convey the movie for what it is. Doctor sleep is a amazing horror fiction movie that has great character development, tons of nostalgia from the original The shining, a lot of character development, a solid lead, and a very interesting premise. It tries to be it's own film for as much as possible, as sometimes Danny Torrence is sidelined for the Abra story arc, but that doesn't hold it back one bit, this movie is well rounded and is an awesome sequal to the original beloved cult classic.
PROS:
-The story is very interesting and is executed very well
-Amazing cinematography
-Has a very dark atmosphere, and for the first hour of it's runtime it was pretty disturbing for me, the second and third hour was more of the fiction coming through
-The cast performed well and delivered some good performances
-Has plenty of nostalgia and fanservice from The Shining
-Is very entertaining got me hooked from start to finish
-Is able to blend in the genres it has pretty well, despite them being pretty easy since, these genres are kinda related
-This movie is different and tries to make itself its own movie as much as it can, this isn't a haunted house movie, it isn't about the overlook hotel, it isn't a prequel, it's something new and brilliant
-Rose the hat is a pretty good main antagonist
CONS:
-The overlook hotel could have been portrayed much better than it did
-Some arcs are overaching the main arcs
-The runtime for the director's cut is too long, and some scenes do linger on for a while, now some of these scenes could have been taken out, like the random interactions between the cult, but those scenes are genuinely fine for me, this is in the cons section because some people may be bugged out because of the runtime of this movie
Overall Doctor Sleep is a really good well rounded horror fiction film, that has a very interesting premise, great execution, great chapter arcs, amazing performance from the cast, and a standout villain in Rose the hat. This movie was really enjoyable and got me hooked from beginning to the end. I have to give Doctor Sleep a 9/10 a damn near perfect movie, that's geniuely scary and full of tension, yet has a taste of different genres here and there while being able to juggle them all really well throughout it's runtime.
The Invisible Man (2020)
A Must See Psychological Horror Thriller
The invisible man 2020 is a good Scifi horror movie, it has tension, psychological horror, and a standout performance from Elizabeth Moss, that makes you really want to root for her character throughout the runtime of the movie. It tells the story of Elizabeth Moss's character escaping from the clutches of her abusive boyfriend, and two weeks later finding out that her boyfriend had commited suicide, but later on she finds out that she is being stalked and harrased by someone that she cannot see. Leigh Whanell has really put his stamp on this project. This movie builds tension, and actual scary thoughts and scenarios, executed greatly and effectively by Leigh Whanell and his crew.
PROS:
-Amazing cinematography
-Stand-out performance from Elizabeth Moss
-Plot twist makes the story a lot more interesting
-Has that sense of uncertainty of is the Invisible Man there or not, and if Elizabeth Moss's character has gone insane or not
-A modern take on the old Universal monster Invisible Man
CONS: Minor spoilers ahead
-Some plot inconveniences like how is the invisible man able to catch up to the heroine so quickly, another example would be at the ending like she killed him with a knife right, but then she appears without the suit right after immediately, like I'm pretty sure putting on and removing the suit takes a little bit more time than that, and then when she moans his death, the police officer rushes over, and he sees her all packed up and ready to go, come on how fast does she move? The speed of light like bro come on
-Some parts of the movie are a little bit stretched out and kinda boring, I had to pause for a bit and do something then come back and finish the movie for a better experience, which I don't normallydo, what I normally do is I watch the movie from start to finish continuously, but just when it's starting to get boring the twist comes in and brings me right back on board with the movie.
Overall The Invisible Man is a good horror Sci-fi flick, that has excellent built up tension, amazing cinematography, a strong female lead in Elizabeth Moss, and a pretty interesting twist to round it all off. I give Invisible Man a 7/10, I did not enjoy it as much, found some parts boring, but it's still really good, and I would recommend this movie to people who are looking for a modern take on a horror classic, or people who are looking for good underrated films that will probably fly under the radar, Leigh Whannell is now on my directors to watch list.
