Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022)
New perspectives
This film offers a refreshingly honest portrayal of the complexities surrounding sex work, thanks to Emma Thompson's courageous performance. The film doesn't shy away from the realities, providing a balanced perspective on the lives of two individuals.
Emma Thompson's portrayal is both heartfelt and genuine, giving a voice to an often stigmatized positions. Her character's journey is portrayed with empathy and authenticity, shedding light on the challenges and triumphs she faces.
The female director and writer bring a unique perspective to the film, particularly evident in the cinematography. The intimate lens through which they view the story adds an extra layer of depth, allowing the audience to connect on a deeply emotional level.
What sets this film apart is its unflinching portrayal of the negative aspects of their lives. It doesn't gloss over the difficulties, painting a realistic picture of the struggles they encounter. This raw honesty adds depth and authenticity to the narrative.
Moreover, 'Good Luck, Leo Grand' offers a forward-looking perspective on a sex-positive future. It envisions a world where individuals can access services akin to those embraced by Emma Thompson's character. This portrayal serves as a powerful reminder of the potential benefits that come with destigmatizing and normalizing discussions surrounding human sexuality. The film's hopeful outlook encourages open dialogue and understanding, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and compassionate society. It's a testament to the film's relevance and its progressive stance on an essential aspect of the human experience.
At the end of "Good Luck, Leo Grand," I found myself moved to tears. The film skillfully navigates the delicate balance between the jubilation of a happy ending and the inevitable closure that all things must face. This poignant juxtaposition of emotions adds a layer of depth that resonates long after the credits roll. It's a testament to the film's commitment to authenticity and its ability to touch the heart. "Good Luck, Leo Grand" is a cinematic triumph, leaving an indelible mark on the viewer's soul. Emma Thompson's exceptional performance, the unflinching portrayal of complex subjects, and the director's unique perspective all come together to create a truly unforgettable viewing experience. This film is a masterpiece in every sense, offering a powerful reminder of the beauty and complexity of the human experience.
Isle of Dogs (2018)
Wes Anderson at his finest
Good story, ground breaking animation (for me at-least) and an absolute style sensation.
The story is captivating and the star studded cast help bring to personality of the doggies to life. Particular shout out to Bill Murray who did a great job!
The animations and style mash of Anderson and Japanese aesthetics is priceless and tasteful. Moreover there are tasteful nods to Andersons Japanese inclusivity by using a translator directly in the film. Additionally the main characters are unabashedly using Japanese; Anderson is putting himself and the audience in the Japanese world appose to a white washed American voyeur experience that this films risks. The dogs speak in English but dogs are free game to speak any language.
Of course this film has been critiqued for cultural appropriation however it is my believe that Anderson has shown us how to tastefully use cultural aesthetics that arent inherently yours to make a good movie.
Ingrid Goes West (2017)
Uncomfortable but good
Its a frilling ride.
I really like how Aubrey plaza character becomes relatable but we as the audience battle with the character; we try to distance ourself from her action. Ingrid progressively shows us how we should all value being genuine and the importance people/ friends around us by polarising us away from her. The film eventually climaxes with a mixed message. And leaves the audience to wonder does Ingrid become genuine? It left me with the feeling dark and empty and wondering #iamingrid? Because of this it is almost a hard recommend but the script and the acting combine to make an easy viewing experience that will make you question how you would feel if you had no one to share with.
Does it critic social media; yes.
Does it reflect on us how we are just as fake and shallow are Ingrid blatant lying through the film; yes.
Tank Girl (1995)
Stylisticly Great
... but! I fell asleep halfway through! :(
Not to say it was boring. I think the dull acting and story wasnt gripping and the style couldnt make up for that. Not one to watch if you're not going to analyse the costumes and style.
But snappy graphics and soundtrack are surely worth it! - Right?
I promise to give this another chance.
Black Bear (2020)
A good enjoyable watch
Well I enjoyed it!
It had me kinda of shouting "what is going on!" , " oh! " , "I knew it!!" at the screen while twisting and turning on the roller coaster writing.
Does it pass the time - yes
Was it enjoyable - yes
Is Audrey Plazza good - yes
Does it make you think - yes
For me its a solid 8.
Chaos Walking (2021)
Has potential
This film has heaps of potential and it seems to have all of the elements to make a great movie. However Too many unexplored in and explain elements it simply wasn't polished enough.
It's worth a watch but be prepared to be underwhelmed.
Love and Monsters (2020)
Romance isnt dead
I really liked this film.
A coming of age romance set in a monster dystopia.
The monsters arent bad!
The CGI and imagination that went into the monsters of this was superb. I enjoy the creativity that the designers employed when creating these monsters. Although some of them maybe rip offs of our household Harry Potter and Lord of the Ring favourites; perhaps some Spiderwick Chronicles for good measure. These monsters are by no means less of a favorite in this film as they are rendered beautifully.
Coming of age?
The story is a solid coming of age romance. Following the journey of one teen boy turned young adult as he is thrown into a world to make his way to of course, romantically sweep a girl off their feet. The story works and is cute enough for you and your girlfriend to watch.
The Crow (1994)
Classic with stylistic integrity!
I've always known this is a classic horror movie but I was avoiding watching it because I thought it might be tacky.
The crow didn't disappoint. It's stylistic and moral plot is great. The crow becomes a likable and relatable character for every kind honest man who loves a beautiful woman.
Although the film is a little cliche at times, this little bit of cliche seems to add to the horror metal kitsch that makes the film a cult classic.
This film is a must watch for any cult film or horror film enthusiast! It's good for an easy night in and a good one to watch with your partner. Although spoilers you partner has to have an open mind about what a relationship film can be. Maybe not want to show on the first date.
The Rental (2020)
