Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God (2005)
Fantasy that could have been good
First and foremost, I love fantasy movies. I even enjoyed D&D Wrath only because there was something about it that brought back some memories for me. Whether it was playing D&D as a kid or watching repeats of Clash of the Titans on the cable classic matinée weekend, I did feel somewhat at home. Structuraly, this script almost had the potential to be great, but alas this did not occur and therefore we are given a semi dry buffy the vampire slayer meets some kind of goofed out video game type movie. I cannot say whether this could have been better or not but I do believe that we need Fantasy movies now. D&D has always been a strong film idea but it needs more attention on the budget side of things than what it has been given lately. With the success of Lord of the Rings, why on earth has Hollywood not pursued this obvious task?
Re-Animator (1985)
One for the cinema book of hell!
Blood! Guts! Mayhem! AND GOD BLESS HIM! JEFFREY COMBS! This is a blood drenched classic horror in the definitive flavor of H.P Lovecraft. Jeffrey Combs' performance hits home with such a force that leaves you gasping for much needed air as the "mad scientist" Herbert West. Stuart Gordon crafts together this gruesome blend of black humor & terror in a masterful way with a great style that holds even the non-horror fan interested. In a way, this film transcends the bounds of the zombie genre with an approach that at the time was much needed in order to break new grounds. The result: A cult classic still talked about in today's horror cinema scene!
The Ancient Rite of Corey McGillis (2006)
Beautiful and macabre
The Ancient Rite of Corey McGillis explores the very foundations of what a classic horror story is. A dark and malevolent Creepshow style Horror EC comics tale story that pretty much left me in a silent brooding shock, which many horror films are quite often lacking lately.
A tortured mute teenager trying to bring his parents back together by raising his father from the dead! Old school monster movies have been my favorite kind and it was a pleasure to see that it can still work this damn well nowadays. The special effects are fantastic to say the least, given the clean yet gritty biting look of the film, which leaves an aura of beauty and dread.
Very atmospheric, with a touch of evil and complete with an explosive mayhem ending, Corey McGillis is dark horror in this genre seal of quality. Great!
Ringu (1998)
Genuine frightening piece of work
What a breakthrough in cinema this film has turned out to be! The perfect blend of a very emotional tragic journey into the suffering of the soul. Strikingly well performed and executed, this is one classic horror film that will stand out and be remembered.
Not often is there a movie that can open the gates of hell and release a horror tornado throughout the world like the Ring has, judging & taking into account the newborn explosion of ghost stories both throughout the Asian cinema market and America. Most horror films out of the Asian league have been feeding off the similar premise that the Ring has created and this is a clear indication that it is the birth of today's modern horror template.
