Hjem til jul (2019)
Seriously good
Fresh, clever and authentic. This is a modern take on a 30-year single woman figuring what she wants from life while navigating through social pressure, expectations and norms. Packed with witty, charming and unexpected moments, this is a true gem for Christmas. I utterly enjoyed every single minute.
The Baby-Sitters Club (2020)
What a truly charming surprise
Didn't have any expectations, planned on having one episode in the background but ended up binge watching half the first season on one go. It's literally 4.25AM as I'm writing this. Great adaptation, great characters, fresh yet nostalgic, funny yet deep. Will definitely make you smile.
Crazy Rich Asians (2018)
Most negative comments here are MISSING THE POINT
I rarely review movies but really felt I had to speak up on this one. Most negative comments made on this film seem to be viewing things through a very narrow lens: too simplistic, almost aggressive against materialism, which itself is fine but it isn't the point in this movie.
Crazy Rich Asians presents a fresh, playful view on cultural differences, socioeconomic classes/norms and modern identities between individualism vs. collectivism. It's not so much about glorifying the ultra rich as it is about the deeper levels: the cultural hierarchies and nuances of such institutionalized families, that come with prestige yet also a huge amount of social pressure - and navigating your sense of self and relationships in such an environment. Anyone who understands wealthy old money families of Asia today will understand the issues this film portrays. Sure, it's extravagant and over the top but it goes much deeper than what you see on the surface. Like that friend who always jokes around but has actually gone through a lot themselves.
Cinematic work is beautiful, fresh take on music/artists and character development decent enough. Entertaining, clever and enjoyable film with much more deeper message than just superficial materialism.
Ps. comments on the actors being too East Asian or too western, just wanted to remind everyone we seem to be pretty comfortable with Schindler's list, the Pianist, the Gladiator or the Amadeus etc..?
Carrie Pilby (2016)
Such a great premise told in such a formulaic way
What I liked:
- interesting background and core premise
- quirky (and a bit dry) sense of humor
- William Moseley (as Cy) comes across a breath of fresh air with an authentic feel to it
What I didn't like:
- barely any character building
- predictability throughout the entire film
- the main character doesn't make it easy to root for her: she's portrayed as a highly intelligent young girl who isn't too shy reminding that either. She name drops and refuses to 'lower' herself to fit in the crowd yet I struggled to see her intelligence having any real relevance in this story
Sergio (2020)
Disagree with most negative reviews here
I'm glad I didn't check the reviews before watching the film because it was such a beautiful story of something that's much more multilayered than just a linear storyline: the balance between Sergio's ambition, internal issues, love + complex nature of international relations. It's not an action film, it's a story of a purpose-driven man on the journey of becoming his true self. The pace is slower which I didn't find boring, quite the opposite in fact, gave enough room to build a more nuanced world and characters. Just watch it.
