Boxing Helena (1993)
It took a long time for the profundity of the movie to sink in.
After first viewing this film, I was more than a little disappointed. Then the deep and profound nature of the film began to sink in more deeply. Whatever was really meant by the film's makers, I took it to be a great statement of the frustration men and women feel toward relations in today's society. The depth of feeling, as well as the "on the edge of your seat" scenes really are great. Maybe "being male" I am already emotionally retarded, so the absorption time for the movie's really great statements were meant to be. Either way, this movie is definitely worth every thinking person's time.
Sabrina (1954)
A great movie even with Bogey out of character.
Humphrey Bogart was once quoted just after signing his biggest contract deal ever with a movie studio, as saying "I like having lots of money, it makes me able to tell the big shots where to get off". He plays one of those big shots in Sabrina. His part of Linus is well played, even though this is not his usual character role of a wide open if reluctant champion of good. Audrey Hepburn has little trouble convincing us that she is ready to step into a snobbish lifestyle, since that was probably her normal personality. The film's weak spot is William Holden. Holden is not often accused of great acting and this movie helps prove that point. Strong point: lots of major actors and actresses; weakness: William Holden's less than believable role as David.
