Highway (2002)
Could have been great, but...
You know this movie had a great potential, could have been a major film for all the characters involved. But somewhere along it fails major. Doesn't really make you 'feel' for any character, they all seem like cardboard characters. Should have breathed life into them. Instead it just manages to take you 'around' aimlessly. It fails to surprise you, the bad guys remain bad, the good are good, the neutral are neutral nothing changes or happens. Whatever was supposed to happen happens. So what's the point of watching it? Some useless diversions which make no sense, probably a very personal film, fails at all levels. There is the classic whore with a heart of gold, the drifter, the two friends, but the chemistry is missing. The electricity just went out. They are all on high, so no lows!
Dark Water (2005)
Save your money. Rent the DVD
What can you say about a movie that has a strong premise but nothing else? The script is weak as weak can get. There is an idea, that's it. Beyond that the movie offers nothing. One cannot make a movie simply on an Idea? Well this is one of those types. Please save your money! Don't tell later that you were not warned. The film just 'wanders' around and if you have seen The Ring then you have seen it all. This film offers nothing more... so if you are entering the cinema hall saying: "This has to be better than ring", then you will be in for the greatest disappointment. The characters are as stale as the Dark Water. The film is a nest of clichés. The 'friend' of the child, the hallucinating adult who has a disturbed past. And what a past: an alcoholic/drug abuse mother, an unseen father. Wonder how the producers accepted to make such a film. It should have been rejected as a script. The poor actors what can they do when they are 'dumped' in the middle of a dead pan story. This is not a horror film this is a tragedy for the viewer. You can rent the DVD when its out, and believe me it will be out sooner than you know.
Kingdom of Heaven (2005)
Good but not great.
Just came back from seeing the movie. I still rate Gladiator above Kingdom of Heaven. With Gladiator a star was born, not so with Orlando Bloom. Can't blame him though, the script had no place for a 'hero'. The supporting caste has done a wonderful job. Some spectacular cinematography and the siege scene is truly breathtaking. But apart from that the film failed to move me, unlike Gladiator. The story manages you from not taking sides, there is no real villain, that's a first I think. One really doesn't understand the dilemma of the hero, he could have saved Jerusalem by marrying the woman he loved, he had anyway gone to bed with her, even while she was married. But when it comes to marrying her, after executing her useless husband, he feels guilty? Now that was the part that really seemed strange. Why would he do that? But given all that its way better than Alexander, definitely worth your time and money.
