Evil Dead Rise (2023)
Far from a masterpiece, but also very over hated.
People were WAY overly-critical of this movie in my opinion. As someone whose watched all of the Evil Dead movies, old and new, this was a welcomed entry. It's creepy, fast, and has that gross and gory horror humor that you'll only find in an Evil Dead movie. I thoroughly enjoyed my time watching it and didnt find myself getting bored. I thought all the actors did a great job but Alyssa Sutherland (Ellie/Possessed mom) knocked it out of the park with her performance and really elevated this movie for me.
Evil Dead Rise is the perfect example of why more times than not you should avoid relying on reviews when looking for a good movie. I know thats ironic coming from a movie review but Im just writing this to give the movie a little boost as I believe it deserves higher than a 6.5.
Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe (2022)
They still got it
As a long time fan of the original show and the previous movie, this was everything I had hoped it would be. Mike Judge hasn't missed a beat and it really shows. The jokes are still just as brain dead and funny as they were nearly 30 years ago. As I watched the movie more, the more I dreaded it ending because of just how much I've missed laughing at these two. However now I can sleep at night knowing there is a reboot of the show coming sometime in August and I couldn't be more excited. This show holds a special place in my heart and I'm glad to see the franchise is still getting the love it deserves and is staying true to its original blueprint while also adapting to modern comedy without turning into a cringe-y mess as so many reboots of great shows have fallen victim to.
Happy to have the boys back on the big screen where they belong.
The Black Phone (2021)
Exceeded Expectations
This movie was a masterclass from start to finish. When I first saw the trailer on YouTube I thought it gave away way too much and I was afraid I wasn't going to like the movie as much as a consequence but now that I've seen it I can say that couldn't be further from the truth. It's really been a long time since I was able to say I loved just about every minute of a movie, especially a horror movie, but I really enjoyed Black Phone.
All of the actors/actresses did an amazing job and I hope to see them in more big and successful projects in the future. It's one of those movies that has a good set of characters that you can connect to and root for and when they eventually prevail you feel it too, and that's a special feeling when watching a movie like this and is one of the many things that made it so great.
I urge anyone and everyone who has the opportunity to see this movie to do so. I truly don't think you'll regret it.
Gon-ji-am (2018)
Starts slow but once it starts it doesnt stop
I put off watching this movie because I usually cant be bothered to watch movies with subtitles and beyond that the last Korean horror movie that I watched because of the hype behind it was Train to Busan and I was kind of let down with that movie. Thankfully, Gonjiam did not disappoint. Considering Grave Encounters is a personal favorite found footage movie of mine and I went into this expecting kind of a Korean version of that movie, I think I enjoyed it a little more even though it really wasnt anything like Grave Encounters.
This movie blows Grave Encounters out of the water when it comes to scares. Where GE has a couple cgi demons that might make you flinch the first time you see them, Gonjiam is filled with downright terrifying scenes especially towards the 2nd half of the movie and my heart was pounding non stop for at least the last 45 minutes.
I think Gonjiam will definitely be the start to me watching more non-english horror movies, which I am excited for because I have heard of many movies that I have been missing out on just like Gonjiam.
The Unholy (2021)
Ups and Downs
Im pretty dead center when it comes to this movie. It does things I like and things I dont like. For example: acting is solid some parts but lackluster in others, I really like the plot and idea behind the whole movie but think it should've been more of a slow burn, but on the other hand some of the visuals during the more intense scenes are great and I love the look of Mary overall. You get the point, for every aspect I dislike theres something good to balance it out and overall it makes the movie not great nor does it make the movie terrible. I'd say if you're bored and looking for something to watch then this is a decent choice.
Come Play (2020)
Decent and Easy to Watch
If you've ever seen the Babadook, this movie follows a very similar plot: mom trying to connect with disabled son but then a monster is unleashed through reading a story. However I personally like this movie more than the Babadook (im sure that opinion would get me torn up by most). I think my reasoning is that to me The Babadook didnt really know what it wanted to be and ended up kind of being all over the place, while Come Play gets its message across while still being able to balance it with horror. Like I said I know its probably not gonna be the most popular of opinions but its my opinion.
Courage the Cowardly Dog (1999)
More than a Cartoon
Courage has been my favorite show ever made since I first saw it when I was no older than 5 or so and since then it has always held a special place in my heart and has shaped my interests and me as a person. Now as a 22 year old adult I can link a lot of my personality traits back to this show, the biggest being my love for all things horror. This show, as its reputation shows, has some rather unsettling imagery and disturbing plot lines and even watching some of these episodes back as an adult I wonder how this wasnt an Adult Swim show sometimes.
Some episodes are more on the tamer side and can even be quite wholesome at times and you'll find wackiness similar to other cartoons at the time. But where Courage shines is when it pushes the boundaries of being a kids show and delves into darker topics in order to teach morals and valuable life lessons. The best examples of these are some of the more well known episodes such as "Perfect" which focuses on insecurities and the internal struggles of not loving oneself, "The Tower of Dr. Zalost" deals with depression and lifting others up rather than spreading toxicity, "The Curse of Shirley" teaches empathy and dealing with a lack of love and a caring childhood, "The Mask" which covers topics such as abusive relationships, same sex couples, prejudices, and much more. I could honestly keep going for hours because of how many episodes teach morals through the dark and beautiful themes and plots throughout the series.
While Courage is great at teaching morals and life lessons that will stay relevant into adulthood it is also masterful when it comes to the horror genre. Mostly through grotesque imagery, Courage has some scenes that will give even the most seasoned veterans of the horror genre the chills. If you've ever gone down the rabbit hole of scary cartoons you have absolutely seen a scene from Courage whether its the infamous "return the slab" scene from "King Ramses Curse", "youre not perfect" from the previously mentioned "Perfect" episode, or the violin girl jumpscare from "Courage in the Big Stinkin' City". Courage has dished out its fair share of nightmares to children across the world and as I mentioned before its scenes like those that are the reason I love the horror genre so much to this day.
As I said in the beginning of this review I will always hold a soft spot for Courage close to my heart and any chance I get to spread this masterpiece of a tv show to others I will take it. I plan on showing my children this show and I hope they will show their children. I have no problem calling this cartoon my favorite show ever made because its more than just some kids show to me and many others that were able to experience it growing up, it helped shape me and I couldnt thank the creators enough for sharing this with the world and I hope they know how much this show means to all of the millions that saw it.
Rest in Peace; Thea White, Lionel Wilson, Arthur Anderson, and Billie Lou Watt.
Evil Dead: The Game (2022)
Beautiful Ode to a Legendary Franchise
This game is everything I had hoped it would be and more. Its not just another L4D clone or copy of other mainstream horde shooters, instead it has its own identity and is an overall amazing experience for casual players and extra special for enjoyers of the movies.
The game is multiplayer focused but as a solo player I do not see myself running out of content any time soon. There are a good little bundle of solo missions that have their own quests and are completely separate from the core game mode which is Humans vs Deadites. A team of 4 Humans will face off against a team of player controlled or AI controlled deadites and the humans need to collect various items across a surprisingly expansive non linear map to trigger a large final boss battle of sorts. The deadites job is of course to derail the humans. There are multiple ways to play this including private match, public match (pvp), player humans vs AI deadites, or what I've played: solo mode which consists of 1 player and 3 other AI humans vs AI deadites. When I've had enough of the solo missions the human vs deadite game mode is a wonderful way to wind down with some casual slaughter.
Overall while I am very happy with the game I do have a few things I hope to see in the next update that I think could improve it even more: difficulty scale (mainly to increase difficulty), more solo missions (which are confirmed but either way I cant wait for more), more game modes (maybe even a full fledged campaign no matter how unlikely), and maybe some new weapons/enemies sprinkled in but if they didnt do that I wouldnt be mad as there is already a healthy amount of hardware and things to use them on. I seriously cant wait for more updates to roll out for this game and see it improve over time. Thank you to Saber Interactive for delivering this gem to us and taking your time to do this legendary franchise a true service and of course bringing Bruce Campbell back to this iconic role once more for us all to enjoy.
Waco (2018)
Great performances and production but not 100% certain about the accuracy.
While I enjoyed it from an entertainment point of view, the historical side of the series seemed to be pretty bias in favor of the Branch Davidians to the point where they are portraying events that only the ATF/FBI and the Davidians could know how they went down. While it had some things done right, the times where they just filled in parts of the story without any real hard evidence backing it up did not sit right with me and I took a lot of it with a grain of salt. The truth is that we will never for certain know who started the tragic fire that killed so many, or if there really was abuse going on in the house, who shot first to start the famous shootout between the ATF and BD's, and many more events that this series portrayed throughout its 6 episodes. But we do know that the FBI/ATF handled the whole thing very poorly and were using some sketchy tactics, David Koresh did have underage wives, the Davidians were stockpiling firearms, and a total of 4 ATF agents and 70+ Davidians ended up dying as a result of the whole thing. Neither side was truly innocent and I dont think this series says that enough.
