Green Room (2015)
Fun violent affair
The movie does grab right it starts but does slow burn where gets interesting and acting is actually not bad. As I am watching it does peel have a thriller Horror vibe. I hope it has that shocking I expect from these kind of movies. The violence is without a doubt the best part of this movie. Its one of my favourite hostage/escape movie's. Patrick Stewart puts in a decent level of skill as well. The tone and mood of this film are perfect for what I believe it's trying to express. With many moody films like this, some of the dialogue feels skimmed over or hard to hear and understand. There are a lot of characters, many of which are quickly forgotten and don't provide any outstanding performances. However, in the final act when there are fewer players, the performances really have space to shine and feel more focused. Patrick Stewart and Imogen Poots really stood out with Anton Yelchin not far behind. Overall, the final act made me sit up and move closer to the screen, as well as bumping up my perception of this film.
Blade Runner (1982)
This is the best movie I have ever seen.
This is the best movie I have ever seen. It is based on the book "Dream Androids about electric sheep?", and the soundtracks were made by vangelis! The film is accompanied by a constant state of suspense, due to unusual angles and scenes, which are terribly stretched to create a sombre melancholy. Such a set of feelings cannot but touch your soul and spoil your mood for the whole day! Also, the film raises difficult questions, like "How much human more humanised than a programmed machine" and many others. Seeping of complexity and drenched in neo-noir conventions, Blade Runner is an all-consuming and divergent movie that has beautiful imagery while asking questions regarding humanity and scientific advancement and at the same time feeling immensely fresh, deeply layered and bracingly audacious.
Jumanji (1995)
Fun Classic
This is a really fun movie! It has great action, and a lot of cool special effects! The animals do look very fake, but it really wouldn't matter! Robin Williams is so much fun as the main character, and the movie moves really swiftly at 104 minutes long. If you are scared of spiders, beware, this movie is not for you. There are quite a lot of spiders in this film! Some stuff is very cheesy in this film, but overall, its really fun. I've just recently watched this as the film was added to Netflix. It's a good, enjoyable film for it's day and I loved the story-line and characters. Yes things could have been better, but it was done in 1995 where a lot of the special effects were limited. This site and the reviews are so harsh, people need to let it go and just enjoy it rather than thinking too much into things. Enjoy!
Drag Me to Hell (2009)
Wickedly funny and simultaneously frightening
Sam Raimi returns to horror with the wickedly funny and simultaneously frightening Drag Me to Hell. A no-compromise genre film filled with strange imagery and tongue-in-cheek laughs. This film is Sam Rami's best horror director of all time it's absolutely terrifying, horrifying and really funny and I'm having a awesome blast. I feel like this is a return to his roots for Sam Raimi, as there are definitely some elements reminiscent of The Evil Dead films. This is like a bigger budget, less claustrophobic but still over the top Raimi gore fest, with Alison Lohman as his target of torture instead of Bruce Campbell. I thoroughly enjoyed it! The movie's theme: banking is a cut-throat business... oh, and don't mess with the Romani!
Evil Dead (2013)
Best Remake Ever
After the outdated 1981 first film of the franchise, a reboot was kind of necessary and the dead return in such an epic fashion. Five friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods. It might not be the most original plot and it actually has a lot of the most common horror tropes, but it shockingly compensates with its gory scenes that are guaranteed to terrify the viewer one way or another. It is incredibly bloody and the terror is genuinely thrilling and entertaining. Making it (IMO) One of the best splatters of all time. It respects the old Evil Dead films but also does everything better than the 1981 original. It has better effects, it's still brutal and the camera work and music is great too. Even the creativity was there (car battery scene). Even all the characters are more interesting than in the first film. Mia is significantly more badass than Ash in the first evil dead. She is the first victim but still the final girl. Even the book looks good too, and the finale against the Kandarian demon was terrific, even though the demon was surprisingly weak.
Godless: The Eastfield Exorcism (2023)
Blends true-crime and horror in this Australian indie
@OverlookFilmFestival (Encore screening)
One of the hurdles that horror films need to clear is is keeping the viewer engaged when it's not "fright time" . That bar proves insurmountably high in "Godless," a confident if unpersuasive story about an exorcism sought out by a husband for his wife after she exhibits strange behavior.
Director Kozakis knows his way around visual language carefully constructing its confined spaces to create a sense of unease that shifts into stifling claustrophobia as the film descends into the madness of the situation.
Standout performances by lead Georgia Eyers and Dan Ewing who showcases a noteworthy portrayal of a quintessential flawed and toxic husband.
I'm sure this will not appeal to all due to its graphic nature but I found it thoroughly engaging and quite a tense experience.
*Warning: may leave you a little distraught and angry.
Foxcatcher (2014)
This movie is tragic and beautifully done
Foxcatcher is a bleak, muted, and cringe inducing movie. It's bizarre on many levels. Steve Carrell's performance is outstanding as the sociopathic John Du Pont who in many ways ironically is who I imagine a rich and evil Michael Scott would be. Du Pont's overwhelming need to feel valued in a space that does not belong to him in the slightest is so uneasy to watch and creates a sense of claustrophobic tension over the entire movie ultimately ending with a shocking and tragic turn of events. This movie is tragic and beautifully done, but is missing just a tad in its middle third to put it over the edge.
Inside (2023)
Horrendously bad (great cinematography though)
Great performance by Dafoe but it just needed a little more story. Incredibly shot though. If you at all have anything else to do other than seeing this movie, do it. It has surpassed every Horrible movie Ive ever seen in my life. The 12 people in the theater last night agreed. I would give this a negative. Awful. Terrible. If you want to watch an escape room where one man gets an extra 45 minutes past the hour time frame to work on escaping, then this is the movie for you. Too dark, too long, very boring. I have to give this movie 1 star bc it wont let me leave it blank. If you at all have anything else to do other than seeing this movie, do it.
White Noise (2022)
No-character, no-story, no-acting.. not worth it
It gets one star instead of none because of the small bit of original suspense. The rest is a no-character, no-story, no-acting (Greta Gerwig is terrible), stilted, incredibly pretentious piece of pseudo-symbolic junk where the writer/director is all. He is all characters. He is all things. It's all about Baumbach and his omniscient look-how-cool-I-can-write-and-direct persona. This movie has miraculously carved out its own realm of terribleness because of Noah Baumbach, to a degree that's hard to reconcile. I know his name now, and will stay away from everything he does like the plague. Worst movie I've seen in a really long time. They put money into this terrible very very abstract movie that just doesn't do anything that you will enjoy and nothing at the end as well. I've seen a lot of abstract movies and a lot of then are good in a specific way. This movie was just awful and they had to put money behind this. Netflix really needs to invest into content that people will enjoy. This movie rivals with the worst movies I've see all time. Avoid this movie and if you want movies that you will enjoy you may need to subscribe to another streaming service because Netflix continues to lose its way and only has a few good movies and shows a year. This was rough!!!!
10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)
Great disturbing thriller
Great setting for a disturbing triller. The plot is well paced and does a good job of keeping you thinking. Great acting makes uncomfortable moments just that little more immersive and good writing helps to engage you with the characters.
This is first horror movie I've seen in years that didn't insult my intelligence. Of course, most horror movies are about on par with cartoons, and we accept that. But this one continually surprised me, thanks to adept direction; crisp, straightforward cinematography with no silly camera acrobatics; and of course, skillful and committed acting, especially from John Goodman. Unfortunately the ending ruins this from being a great film, it feels out of place, unnecessary and doesn't add anything to what makes this film worth watching. I really wish this one had finished 15mins early...
The Offering (2022)
Predictably meh
The film is predictable most of the time and uses elements of Jewish culture in a decontextualized way. The demon's CGI is quite simple and doesn't have a lot of screen time, perhaps, to disguise the sloppy strokes. As for the story, it's a bit confusing and rushed, you can't expect much. As for the characters, Arthur is possibly the only one that stands out (for his idiocy, mainly); the others, although fulfilling their functions, are easily replaceable and end up being just a detail. And in the end, besides being frustrating, it's kind of funny, which for a horror movie doesn't make much sense. Anyway, I only watched it so I wouldn't see Ant-Man twice.
M3GAN (2022)
I couldnt tell what this movie was trying to be
I couldnt tell what this movie was trying to be. Is it horror because its definitely not scary. Is it comedy because its not really funny. I only kind of enjoyed it because it was just bad. I wouldnt watch it again sober. The story concept was good in the beginning, but towards the end, the character development of M3gan got sloppy. M3gan's character arc did not develop the way it should have. She took on more of a sinister position versus one of a deranged robot which is where the movie was trying to go. Overall, it was still clever yet predictable. It's not really a horror film. It's a slow burning warning on relying on tech to do a lot of the heavy lifting in life. The ending scene was kind of meh.
High Life (2018)
Unsatisfying...
I feel like my wife and I are a rarity amongst film lovers. We are not charmed by French movies just by virtue of them being French. This movie was tedious. It was boring. I am not convinced RPatts can act. It was all nonsense and jumped around far too much. And shocking for shock's sake, which isn't very sophisticated, now, is it? Legit people walked out of the theater on this one when we saw it. It handles its themes in a rather hackneyed way, which is, from what I can tell, pretty normal from certain French directors. Why this one gets love, I have no idea. Extremely slow and horrible transitions. The movie starts out with him and his baby. Then it goes back to before explaining how his daughter was born on the ship. Then suddenly without any transition it jumps forward like 17 years and his daughter is all grown up. Good space sci-fi movies are not meant to be low budget. If it's a comedy like Space Balls then okay low budget is fine. But this movie was a waste of time, I fast forwarded thru most of the movie and still got the main parts of the plot. The ending was even more unsatisfying.
Significant Other (2022)
It had potential...
I didn't like it at first and I'll tell you why. It consisted of a scene where the tent was being put up and the female , with her little girl brain, couldn't figure out how to properly pitch the tent. Apparently she couldn't cook out in the woods either, because, you know, girls are totally reliant on their men when it comes to being outdoors. In addition, the man was an idiot because he seemed to not know the difference between someone who has stress and someone who has an anxiety disorder. Typical idiot man who isn't capable of understanding human feelings and emotions. "Just talk to your therapist and everything will be fine." So the first time I watched it, I turned it off after all that. It's ludicrous for movies to continue to show these unrealistic gender stereotypes. If you can get past all that, it turns into an interesting sci-fi type movie. It's not apparent what is happening at first so it kept me interested. It was decent if you like old school sci-fi.
Aftersun (2022)
Heart wrenchingly beautiful
I guess each movie review is somehow subjective, but this one was personally relatable for me in so many dimensions: my childhood Turkey, our family holidays, the exact close relationship with my dad as a kid... Every single thing that I have lost over the years. Turkey is not the same cheerful place anymore, neither is my life, I got so distant with my dad that I cannot even call him randomly anymore. All these things that I have missed the most were hidden in deepest part of my memory. All were now blue. And this movie, from start to the end, took every bit of emotion out without hesitancy. I have left half a star out, for the sake of doubt, as I am sure I was biased towards it. From 5 minutes in, it was almost impossible for me to stop crying. It was full of emotions, mostly grief but also happiness, nostalgia, blues... Surely will be one of my favorite movies due to the personal connection it created. Well played, well done.
