Kis Uykusu (2014)
One of my favourite Nuri Bilge Ceylan Movies
Trying to explain winter sleep is a really hard thing. Like his other movies, this movie also takes you inside till the end. You have to think while you are watching all scenes it is not an action or commercial movie this is a piece of art. There is no doubt to Ceylan has won the prize for his movie and I am very proud of him as a Turkish man. After the success of Yilmaz Guney's movie 'Yol' Winter Sleep was the second feature movie that has won best picture golden palm from Cannes Movie Festival and iconically both of them have given the same pose after their speech at festival.
If I summarize the theme. Our characters live together in a rural place together. Aydin, his wife Nihal and his sister Necla. They have a hotel in Cappadocia that is a very touristic place in Nevsehir,Turkey. In winter they live together there and stay too much together in the same place enough to come into conflict with each other. So to say, we can see confession full of angry, hate and fear. Aydin and Necla mostly discuss their ideas about life, religion and their situation. In the beginning, two of them are calm and provide useful view to each other but after a while they start to blame and throw up hate each other. They are very good at seeing the deficiencies of others but ignorant in recognizing themselves. When we look at Aydin and his wife, actually, they don't have a nice marriage that they don't stay together. They are clear-headed people so they married each other fondly, however, after they get to know one another they start to be away from each other. In one scene, Nihal shares her real and open ideas about his husband. She mentions him as a selfish person who wants to control everything and everyone around him. Then, her husband says that his wife is unfair to him and he is working to keep their marriage well.
During this whole things, we can clearly see the rural place of Turkey and ideas about many situations about life. Ceylan has affected and inspired by writers like Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Chekhov. There is also another subject that is covered in movie. Aydin and the people around him like Nihal and Necla represent 'Upper Class' and try to define intellectual person and at the same time we see representatives of the lower class like Aydin's assistant and clergyman in the village with his family. As a consequence of this we have a chance to contrast and compare different people from different backgrounds. I can obviously say that every detail has covered in this movie too much care.
Lastly, I want to mention my two favorite scenes. The Money scene and final scene. I won't give too many details in Money scene Aydin's wife Nihal wanted to help to poor family that live in village for they have a better life condition but a man does not accept this and throw the money to fire. In final scene we hear a letter from Aydin's mouth to his wife and it was very impressive and emotional. Please go and watch this amazing movie.
Les glaneurs et la glaneuse (2000)
Such a nice documentary
This was my first film which was a record by Agnes Varda and I don't know what can I say now. It was very different from what I have watched anything until today. Actually, it is a documentary about any kind of gleaners: Rubbish, food, fruit and secondhand stuff. Agnes Varda has worked too much on this piece and she has made interviews with many people who are doing collecting something. Firstly, we see some agriculture gleaners and their life. In many zones, people are waiting for harvest time to collect remaining crops and also the law is allowing these stuff like that way. The people who need something are providing food and money by selling their stuff to themselves and at the same time, the remaining products are not wasted in that way. For instance, for the potato, factory and field owners are collecting potato that has a nice shape and enough weight. The others left in the field or going to rubbish so this means opportunity for many gleaners. Secondly, there was a man who is collecting some second-hand goods from the street and rubbish and then he used them for his works of art. He is giving correct shape to them and bringing them together for use in his works and he says ''I like secondhand stuff and doing some kind of arts with them because they have memories and I am giving second chance to them by using in my works.'' This sentence affect me too much and I asked myself ''Are goods have an experience or memories?'' obviously he is looking from another side of the window to his life. Thirdly there was another guy who studying for a doctorate and he is collecting food from the bazaar in the city to saving his money. And he is living in a kind of shelter with a lot of immigrants. He said that fifty percent of people in this building don't know literate and he is giving a course to teach reading and writing in French for free. We see a part of their class and I can say this scene was very impressive. They are making some jokes with each other and look very happy. At this moment I was thinking about we are all happy when we realized some little things to make us happy and be thankful for our life. Also in the documentary, you can see some clues about 90s France. All in all, I liked it and I am happy to watch this documentary. In this text, I tried to explain some points that remain in my mind. I have learned some interesting information and have experienced very different kind of film.
Manchester by the Sea (2016)
Best drama I have ever seen
Manchester by the sea has a stunning atmosphere that takes you inside, you lost while you are watching. This movie probably can come slow and inadequate for many people because of his vibe but it is drama my friend. You should be patient when you watched then you can feel yourself as a part of the story cause the movie provides that to you. The movie is going on very plain and calm. In the movie you can obviously see emotions of characters: unrest, despair and regret. Script and dialogs were wonderful for the story and they successfully show vibe of movie but there are some problems in editing part in my opinion, during the whole movie they have used flashbacks and until the first hour, scenes are very intertwined and incomprehensible. You can't understand what happening there at the beginning but on the other hand in every flashbacks we are going to the deeper side of Lee Chandler's inside and learning his past, memories and why he is like that. In short some flashback scenes were unintelligible at first but generally they were nice.
In the movie both of the leading actors were very gorgeous: Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams. No wonder Casey Affleck has received an Oscar award for his performance in this movie. He deserved this till the end because he was very successful and natural, like i said beginning their performances take you inside of story and reinforce power of feeling. In the scene that Lee and Randi encounter on the street, both of them was very impressive. Especially Lee couldn't say almost anything but he was felt his emotions to us. I can say cinematography was adequate we have seen many sights from town and sea and I loved it.
In short, If you a person that likes drama you should watch it. There are not too many things like this one. The emotions felt in the movie were so powerful.
Ölümlü Dünya (2018)
Hopeful movie for today's Turkish Comedy
Ölümlü Dünya was an adequate movie for me even it was very nice. I don't remember, I have laughed like that for a long time. There is no cliche humor in the movie when we compare it with other Turkish comedy movies. Cast and director are group of friend in real life too as a consequence of this I believe that they made a very sincere and successful work. We see a family which has a restaurant and they are working together in there and at the same time they are killers. The story is mostly going on with brothers from family. They are Serhan,Zafer and Serbest. Dogu Demirkol who acts Zafer character was very successful and funny. In many scenes he looking strange and dull somewhere even if there is a serious situation that relevant to him too and it makes you laugh. On the other hand, Serbest character has strange features too. He is talking too much and unmeaningful and probably he don't knows anything what he is talking about too. You are getting a little bit boring while you are watching Serbest speech scenes because these scenes are a little long and generally you don't understand what happened but the nice point in there is that at the same time these unmeaningful speeches are funny.
During the movie we see family's a few works and some of them contain action scenes. These were also enough for a turkish movie but they must be improved, in some parts there was incomprehensible and disconnected moments. The thoroughness in the script and dialogs satisfy expectations and reminds us comedy that is able to people make laugh without some sexist and disturbing language. Moreover, the music that is using in the opening scene made me very happy and it is exactly best option for this movie. It is from ''Cöpcüler Krali'' movie which is acted by Kemal Sunal because of that when i heard this song it reminds me 'Yesilcam Cinema' and makes me feel good. I wish Kemal Sunal movies also would be known worldwide.
All in all, 'Ölümlü Dünya' deserves watching even if there are some repetitive and inadequate parts. Take my word and watch it. Thank you to Ali Atay for such a movie.
Into the Wild (2007)
Impressive and dramatic story
''You are really good. I mean, you're like a hundred, thousand times better than any apple I've ever had. I'm Supertramp and you are super apple.'' I wanted to start with a nice line from the movie. The movie was very impressive but it is not a common subject and it is tragedical story. Movie shows conflicts about life and the difference between city life and wildlife. When the movie finished i couldnt think about what should i do now. You just start to think and ask about life, the world and some stuff. We see a man who tries to escape from a corrupt society and decides to live into the wild as you can predict. He has some trouble with his parents and when he completed his university he is leaving from home with his backpack. His destination is reaching Alaska and we see her travel to there. He is meeting a couple of people during his journey and almost everyone who met with this guy they love him and having great time each other as a consequence of this in the journey we watch lots of farewell scene however we now that he has to stick with his target 'to Alaska'. Especially the last old man held on to him so much. They are doing some staff together in old man's house. Lastly old man takes him somewhere and this is time to leave for them. This scene was very dramatic and make you sad. Old man say to him 'I want to adopt you if you want too' because his child was dead as i can remember and our little boy say that 'Let's talk about this when i came back' but how do you know that. I feel angry about this situation he left him as a crying man. Also why he didn't say anything about his plan after the university to his sister. We can understand his situation with his parents but he should have talked with his sister. Anyway, in the end I was shocked because i didn't know it based on a real story. When they showed to us real picture of him that he had taken before he has died, I felt really bad. We can't change the end because of that it based on a real story however in a scene near to end the main character decides to turn back and realized that the river has raised and he cant reaches to another side of river. In this scene i was thinking why he didnt try again to find another way he just go to the river and saw some problems then he like okay there is no way to get out from here lets go back to the bus and wait for my end. I didn't like that.
You realized that we dont need most of things in our lives when you watched it. We buy clothes everyday that we wont wear again, we buy technological devices because of it's new version has launched and we are wasting our time to work and then to buying new furniture for our houses. We all have roles in capitalist system. Everyday somethings are producing and we are creating huge rubbish. It is not easy to take opposite place to your voice that coming from your inside but we should try and work on some important things. Moreover, we should ask about our life, purpose, what are we doing, what are we want to do cause we dont have second chance we have only one lifetime then why don't we realize and are wasting our time some silly things. Our guy from the movie tries to live great moments to worth.
Eddie Vedder has made soundtracl album for this movie and they were great, they are improving the theme and power of feeling. During the movie almost we see the same guy but you don't get bored any time cause he is really magnificent, efficient and sure about what is he doing. My last opinion about this movie, It obviously has an inspired, realistic and emotional theme and you should go and watch it becasue it is a gripping and stunning movie and you have not seen anything like that.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
The Classic forever
Firstly I want to say, I will talk and give my opinion about the whole series with only writing to here. The Lord of the Rings is a very special piece for me. I was very influenced when I watched the first time because I haven't seen a movie before like that. We have the huge universe and great script, in my opinion, it is because of that the movies based on a novel from J.R.R. Tolkien. The last movie released in 2003 and I was just 1 age at the same time. I wish that i could see the movies at the cinema obviously it would be a very different experience. For many people especially the first movie can come moving very slowly but you have to be patient. I can describe the series as stunning, breathtaking and classic because while I was watching the movie I am just lost in it.
In addition, if I talk about some technical stuff; cast came very successful to me they seem like they were created for their own roles and even if today, we are remembering the cast as a part of the movie. They wont lose their character forever. The movie was created in New Zealand and they used a real place for the Shire that we know as Frodo and his uncle Bilbo Baggins' home. Village and Hobbit's home constructed for the movie as real buildings. I was very surprised when I learned this knowledge first time and nowadays it's a famous touristic place. Soundtracks also very nice I suppose. We all know famous rhythm of movie. The cinematography was also great we saw many different and impressive places in the series and the sight was very fascinating. Simply for the content we can say there is a war between some species. We have Elfs, People, Hobbits etc.
Lastly, I want to talk about my personal opinions. My favourite war scene is also in this movie it's called Battle of Helm's Deep. They have worked on it for four months because it is a very important chapter of series therefore it was a very impressive scene and it pays off. Maybe you dont agree with me if you watch Game of Thrones but I have no idea about this TV series so it's okay for me. Moreover, My favourite character in series is Samwise Gamgee because I believe that he saved all people and Frodo wouldn't be successful without Sam, it is very obvious. Gollum(My precious guy) tries to separate them while their travel to Mount Doom and finally Frodo believes him and says to Sam 'You are trying to steal the ring from me I think you have to leave from us'. This scene was very dramatic for me and Sam's heart has broken in there we felt that hardly. To conclusion, Lord of the Rings is one of my favourite movies, I can watch again and again and I know that I won't be bored.
