Extended Play (1982)
Unlucky in his romantic pursuits, a young man seeks solace in the mind-numbing embrace of a shopping mall video arcade.
One of the few truly great short films. Very entertaining and funny as hell. Amazingly prescient piece released at the onset of the video game boom, treating this new phenomenon much like "Dr. Strangelove" treated Mutual Assured Destruction. A 7th or perhaps 70th sign of the Apocalypse, "Extended Play" hilariously views the adolescent appeal of the twitch game as a clear indicator of our descent into a new Dark Age. I first saw this film when it screened at the midnight marathon of the late great FILMEX International Film Festival in Los Angeles, where it deservedly garnered the Audience Favorite award. To my delight, I again discovered "Extended Play" in the Cult Movie section of a local mom'n'pop video outlet as part of a rare compilation titled, "Mutant Video
