** Little spoiler coming**
The summary really sums it up. Rutger Hauer may scare the shit out of you as John Ryder. C. Thomas Howell as Jim Halsey is picking up the hitcher John unsuspectingly, thinking he is doing a good deed. We follow their battle on the road with desert as long as you can see. With scary action on the way it ends with a climax able to take your breath away. If you loved Rutger Hauer as a replicant in Blade Runner, you'll love him as a deranged psycho killer in The Hitcher. In Blade Runner we had some empathy for his caracter "Roy Batty". We felt sorry for Batty when he died in the end. In the The Hitcher his role as John Ryder has no redeeming qualities. He is just pure evil. His acting is so good you would believe he REALLY was that crazy.
"Ordinary" commercial movies always got a good ending. Not this one. If you expect things to end well, forget it. See this movie on a big widescreen TV 40-inch or higher, it deserves it and it looks scarier!
PS. After seeing this movie you will always look out for fingers in your french fries...
