Yonder (2022)
Beige passionless drivel
Tepid, bland, the typical tedious soundtrack that are so beloved by Asian films when surely they have something more culturally appropriate they could use.
Anyway there is no sense of passion or loss, or even some lust for gods sake! I think The film The Handmaiden is the only Korean thing I have seen that could be considered 'spicy.'
Well this theme has been done many times in different ways. And this is the least compelling I can remember seeing, it is just so goddamn passionless! I don't feel the desperate heart ache you have in say a film like Solaris to decide to choose a fiction of some sort in stead of real life because you are bereft.
1923 (2022)
The script is more clunky than a Model T Ford
Whoever wrote this script has 2 tin ears. It happily kills off the minor characters so the righteous indignation of the mayor ones allows them to indulge in brutal violence.
The pompous speeches, the the feather weight philosophising and the Luddite hatred of all things new is soooo dull... these characters predict the future so well, I am sure the dolts who cherish this crap will idolise them.
And don't get me started on the British love interest. Only a yank script writer could think she would speak that way. God she is so irritating!
This whole genre of new cowboy shows are somewhat insidious. They are a new kind of revisionist crap, they pay lip service to being more even handed regarding treatment of indigenous people etc but in the end hold up the traditional values that saw them slaughtered.
Oh and the bad guys are pantomime bad !
The Following (2013)
The shark gets jumped so many times it's dizzy
How does anyone think this is a decent show? The plot relying on some superhuman bad guy with influence and charisma beyond anything plausible is a worn out trope.
I also hate the torture porn aspect if this. It's prurient and just cruel.
And boy is it dated. The swooshing cuts are grating in the extreme.
I am reminded of shows like The Mentalist etc where a you have a bunch of predictable archetypes and a villain who is essentially a superman except I had more patience with the mentalist. My patience with this show is minimal and not least because I see they strung this conceit out for 3 series!!!
Poker Face (2023)
Am I living in an alternate universe?
How on THIS planet can this be an 8+?
What is funny is that I did not know it's by the same guys who did The Glass Onion which is truly atrocious.
For starters she can't act. How on earth where the celebs convinced to take part in this.
Blackmail?
Next is the clunky story lines. I feel this show is made to make dumb people think they are smart.
This is a throw back to TV when it was awful and people like to think it was good.
The characters are cardboard cutouts, the product placements are like billboards.
I am loosing the will live just trying to reach the requisite character count for this review.
Six (2017)
God, do yanks believe this crap is real
A classic slice of American Pie. Saccharine sweet and covered in blood.
The dialogue is cringeworthy the perpetuation of American exceptionalism tedious and old hat and the testosterone fuelled bromance hysterical.
It's crap like this that blinds your average citizen to the reality of what crimes are committed by their govts. They diligently wave flags while their leaders pocket the profits and laugh at the fools.
Thirteen Lives (2022)
Just watch the documentary
For a long film the opening was sketchy and rushed.
Curious choice of actors. No real English ones available? The accents are just about bearable... hmm or maybe not.
I find the directing a bit pedestrian and it lacks the grittiness of the documentary
It's probably best regarding diving scenes just because they could reenact them I guess.
Banshee (2013)
This is almost as bad as Sons of Anarchy
Incredulity has left the building. It started out as amusing but soon turned into the usual torture porn fest. At least they weren't pudiente about sex, any chance to show tits arse and p&@&y.
Ok so apart from the ridiculous characters and idiotic script it does the cowardly thing of never killing off any of its main characters, so they escape impossible odds to get recycled over and over again.
The Old Man (2022)
Plodding and pretentious
It had potential but the complete implausibility of every aspect of this premise from an old git being able to fight like that or the convoluted twaddle of 'family' and more 'family' just stretched incredulity. And then the script? Is this the work of a frustrated yank with delusions of European art house nonsense? No one talks like this? An endless stream of faux philosophical garbage. I will try to finish it...
After Yang (2021)
Sci fi ho hum
There are some interesting ideas here, but nothing that has not been done before and better. The tone and pacing is portentous and plodding. The apparent need to tick as many PC boxes as possible does more harm than good for the cause; the family scenes are fridges to say the least. Basically nothing much to see here, move on.
The ending was a complete damp squib as well.
Reacher (2022)
It would be funny if it was not so scary or depressing
This show makes me appreciate Tom Cruise.
In the golden age of TV series how does this third rate crap get made?
Muricans in love with their meat muppets whilst the military industrial complex feeds them into the meat grinder;. Anachronistic heroes in the age of drone warfare and the abuse of civil liberties. Reacher is a joke. A lumbering testosterone fuelled throwback to a golden era so many yanks believe in but never existed.
Sad and kind of scary. They believe the hype.
Eternals (2021)
Plodding and it feels like an eternity
First off I hate the premise that all mankind's leaps in technology are courtesy of a bunch of patronising space tourists; conspiracy nuts who think humans are incapable of building pyramids, etc, must be having wet dreams watching this.
Apart from highlighting how crap people are at anything, the biggest problem is the faux portentous dullness of the script; watching it is like being slipped a tranquilliser with your cornflakes before you even had a chance to wake up in the morning.
And seeing the Game of Thrones actors just messed with my brain and I bet Angelina Jolie remembers nothing about filiming this.
Mayor of Kingstown (2021)
It's not too bad but it is heavy handed
I consider this a second tier show, it is entertaining but some of the characters and character relationships are kind of like virtue signalling with jazz hands; OTT.
BUT the single worst character by a mile is the mother...Jesus wept the portentous faux gravitas tone is irritating in the extreme. Truly awful characterisation.
Spencer (2021)
This is one hot mess of a film
I loved Jackie, I hated this.
Everyone says her acting is great and I agree it is great acting, but that's the problem it feels just like acting, everything feels too much like observation rather than interpretation.
As a character I found her infuriating. I lost patience and sympathy for this character, so I guess that is a fail.
All the hallucination stuff seems melodramatic. The cobbled together scenes of her childhood looks like an afterthought handed off to 2nd director.
And the music is annoying
The only good thing about this is that if it shows the royal family in a true light then let's put the whole lot of them out on their arses. What a preposterous institution.
Titane (2021)
Jesus wept...
I get it is in some alternative realm like sci fi/horror films are; but even there it is important implausible plodding, pretentious, etc, etc, etc... I have come to the conclusion French films are like French food and French music and the French resistance... overrated, they have a special talent for blinding the world and convince it otherwise.
Oeconomia (2020)
Fascinating but you might need to watch it twice
I watched this knowing nothing about it. So it was in German which is usually not a problem with most films when you can loose attention and quickly get back into the story.
This however needs total attention especially when viewing graphics which are also in German.
I will definitely watch it again and I think this is not a criticism as subject matter like this need to be revisited, I am reminded a little of Adam Curtis documentaries which also can easily be watched again (and again) each time giving up more gems to ponder.
The filming is also excellent, I love the imagery and the wry humour that often underlies it.
Regarding the subject matter well, as has been said by others the realisation that the 'high priests' of this system seem clueless and often patronising when confronted with the simplest questions is at once satisfying and also scary. I have almost no respect for the pseudo-scientific discipline that's called economics and this just seems to reaffirm my doubts (and often contempt) for it.
Anyway I can't say much more without watching it again and doing so properly , but like I often do with the films of Adam Curtis I will be recommending this to anyway I think might be interested.
I suspect that this being in German may limit its impact and the one thing I would think could help is to make it easier to understand some of the graphics which are very elegant and helpful in illuminating the story, the only issue is that if there are also subtitles on screen it becomes difficult to take everything in.
The Serpent (2021)
Ok...
I am perplexed why people think this is good; it feels very accurate re: the period it portrays, but only because the acting, direction, cinematography and script are wooden, plodding and dated. I find it unwatchable and doubt I will be ever be desperate enough to try episode 2.
Before/During/After (2020)
As usual the ratings for films like this are a joke
This was a pretty run of the mill film. I give it a 6 which means I am on the fence as to if it was worth watching... the 10 ratings here are complete and utter nonsense and obviously bogus. As the film well what is there to say some vaguely funny moments, not completely plausible characters (trying to hard to be wacky) and I found the lead to be a pain in the neck.
Yellowstone (2018)
On what planet does this get 8+ stars?
I was curious, god do I regret that now.
Basically Dallas set in Montana... excreable nonsense.
I dont know why I am thinking of Sucession while I watch this but I guess it is becasue both shows deal with awful familes but one is pure genious and the other a crock of s***.
Of all the characters the sister has to rank as the one of the worst, were her lines written by a intern? Its laughable that in this golden age of TV series someone can get away with this...
Thankfully the toxic levels of excrement means one does not have to even go near the politics this joke of a show espouses.
