My First Summer (2020)
Exceeded expectations
Didn't come here expecting too much. Low budget movies with LGBTQ themes are usually mediocre at best. However I was pleasantly surprised.
It was a movie that didn't have many people or settings yet it was meaningful and heartfelt without being boring or cliche. There are many movie genres that have been redone to the point that even if they have phenomenonal production value they are easily forgotten. Sadly this is very common with movies that have lesbian themes in them as with there being so few, the repetition of period dramas where they cannot get together in the end has become a little overused.
However this movie is a breath of fresh air in some ways. It's not campy or cringy and deals with real world themes. And considering its capacity does so very well. Claudia's greif at losing her mother clashes with the feelings she gets from meeting someone new. Claudia's mother is also very intresting. The way it deals with mental health and emotions is in no way pretentious or 'left to the audience to interpret'. It's clear cut and realistic. Claudia is in a position where she is extremely vulnerable, she had just failed to commit joint suicide with her mother and has been left on her own. Her mental stability is quite literally hanging on by a thread and the movie clearly shows this.
Also I'd like to add that whilst the sheer amount of sweets and junk they eat may seem unrealistic, I've seen girls this age survive on sour lollies from the corner shop and a few packs of millions and starbursts. Energy drinks and strawberry milk often the drinks of choice. I think this film definitely feels more personal to other teenage girls, especially those that are queer. As whilst the characters may seem childish, I think that it's not that they are childish as they clearly understand what's happening but instead that people today have certain expectations of teenage girls. Whilst this film isn't set now but years prior. I think if you put yourself in the shoes of these girls then their behaviour doesn't seem so weird.
Overall it's a movie I definitely recommend, it feels like a book you'd read during the summer, sat outside in the evening. Really well put together and fitting of its title.
Benedetta (2021)
Still pondering over this movie.
This film left me confused and awed. An honest rating wouldn't be able to be captured in numbers. I like the feel of the movie, it truly transports you to the time period. All the supernatural elements at the beginning made me believe Benedetta was truly protected and liked by Mary but as the movie carried on it was seriously put into question atleast for me. The whole absurdity of Jesus being her husband and how God only spoke through her when she wanted something makes her legitimacy come into question. So much happens in this movie that the suicide is easily forgotten.
Overall I do feel like religion was a bit crazy back in the day and with the lack of available knowledge and just time people had, having visions of Jesus was probably a common thing. I did get a few laughs out of the movie at some absurdities, like Benedetta suckling Mary's tit and the poor old Meet statuette.
First Kill (2022)
The lesbian vampire drama we needed!
This show is a supernatural drama, the words corny and cheesy practically ooze from such genres therefore a review should be done keeping that in mind. Yes first kill was cheesy, it definitely fit the genre, but that was part of the charm. If you come to watch this show expecting anything else then disappointment is inevitable. The opening was amazing! Loved the art and the song which fits the characters in my opinion and the plot itself was also pretty strong. For its budget and being one of the first shows that portrays lesbian vampires in a arguably better light than its counterparts I think it's a wonderful product! It's definitely a show a younger me would've enjoyed and it's existence is a huge milestone, it remind me of Fear Street. Cheesy and corny and drama filled but that's it's charm and definitely something that is missing for younger lesbians and members of the community. I am looking forward to a season 2 as the end left me with lots of questions!
