The X Files: Eve (1993)
Scully Was Right
Another template X Files episode without the UFO's and the aliens. I think they did a good job with the plot twist, I for one didn't expect it. What I really enjoy about this one is the premise of the mystery and how Mulder and Scully deal with it as the episode rolls. Since I don't remember details, all I have to say is it's done in a very cool way. I do remember one of the girls took advantage of Mulder's alien obsession.
Oh and kid actors that are good actors, AND are good secondary actors. What else do you need? By the way, I got major True Detective vibes this whole season, and the jail scene in particular this episode.
The X Files: Fallen Angel (1993)
All Around Great
I think the importance of secondary characters acting is very underappreciated. Do you have any idea how damn important secondary characters are? Very. Seriously, even if you have two scenes, you go and be DDL for those 5 minutes. The doctor in this episode had a complete character arc with passionate acting with only 2 scenes (maybe 3... but it was a small role). Max Fenig was the man of the match though, he really gives life to "Fallen Angel".
And that levitating special effects, huh? Top tier. Corny not found.
The X Files: Space (1993)
Space Ghost!
Clearly unfinished imo. All the ideas are here, they just are underdeveloped. My main problem is with the plotting, since it really shows how unfocused it is. Plotting an episode is one of the most difficult things to get right, I'd say, (fight me) and only with the proper time one shall find the point to stop and say: "here it is, it's done". I bet there was no proper time here.
The X Files: Ice (1993)
John Carpenter's Ice
It's pretty obvious what the homage is, and it's well done. At first I didn't enjoy it that much, since the change of setting and eloquent acting caught me off guard. But days after seeing it, I got the idea and managed to appreciate "Ice" like it deserves. I find it hilarious they didn't notice the pilot was sick... like, look at him. Also, lesson learned from "Pilot" and "Deep Throat" yet again, as they didn't show any crazy effects, and went for the minimal production.
The X Files: Ghost in the Machine (1993)
Halloween? Are you sure?
Don't really get the Halloween in the premise, since it plays no integral part. The whole computer situation ended up being very dated, not charming-dated. The secondary characters also don't really do it for me. Always a plus seeing Deep Throat tho.
The X Files: Shadows (1993)
Another X Files 101
Apart from UFO's and aliens not being in it, "Shadows" is one of those perfect template X Files episodes. Good MOTW, good secondary characters, plot is alright, the threat is there, the plotting is good.... good all around. Not much more to say, since I don't remember the details.
The X Files: The Jersey Devil (1993)
Different Structure
First time Mulder and Scully go their separate ways. Seeing Scully being a real person and doing real person stuff was really important to develop the world of the first season. I know it's not much, since we know both her and Mulder have lives besides the investigations. However actually seeing it happen is very important, imo.
Mulder improvising his way to the mystery was absolutely crucial to paint his personality better. Same idea from the last point, we know he is a wildcard with an unconventional approach, but seeing it happen is what solidifies it.
If the MOTW wasn't just ok, the rating would be higher.
The X Files: Conduit (1993)
The X Files Finds It's Stride
"Conduit" does what "Pilot" and "Deep Throat" did... but better. At least in my opinion, since the rating for this is lower than them. But I stand by my rating. This episode doesn't make the mistake of showing too much, hence the lack of cheesy and corny effects. It also has more substance with Mulder's character arc playing an important part with the main plot.
I should've written these reviews right after watching the episodes... now I can't write in-depth.
The X Files: Squeeze (1993)
I Haven't Even Begun to Peak
After two good episodes leaning more to the corny side, we get this bad boy. "Squeeze" is a curve ball for your expectations up until now (if you're watching in order). From cheesy UFO effects and plot to your new nightmare, this episode managed to cast the perfect actor to the role, and nailed the demon eye effects. The squeezing effects are good enough to not break the momentum, and even though we know the main characters are not dying, you can't help fearing for their lives.
A 10/10 rating is never really 10/10, cause nothing is perfect. However, you get the gist.
The X Files: Deep Throat (1993)
More like a 7.5/10
Improved from "Pilot", but not there yet. I think both this and "Pilot" are very similar in their general structure and ideas.
The X Files: Pilot (1993)
Pretty Good
For me the trend with The X Files season 1 (I just finished watching for the first time) is a mix of high and lows, with ok episodes I enjoy a lot. Also, in my opinion there's this corny aspect to season 1 that can make or break some moments or episodes. The pilot is a good start.
