The Informant! (2009)
Very good movie
Can you count all of the comedian and comedic actors in this movie? The soundtrack is by Marvin Hamlisch, who does a great job spoofing the early Bond films and goofy movies of the 70's. Matt Damon is his usual self in a well-chosen script. The humor is subtle, so I'm not surprised other viewers didn't find it funny. There are mixed reviews on the main character in real life, so that makes the movie that much more interesting. The script is peppered with trivia usually related to the scene at hand. Was the ending the greatest? The ending takes a turn not supported by the jocular tone of the rest of the movie. Some might find this confusing and/or disappointing. This viewer thinks it added a depth to the otherwise florid experience.
The Girls Next Door (2005)
Best with sound off
The girls are great to watch yet listening to them becomes a bit grating. I a big fan of Bridget (it's so cute how she goes to college!). The other two look a bit plastic and have annoying laughs. And, of course, I am jealous as all get-out of Hef and the photo crew. (Seriously, my guidance counselor can go f*** himself!). Even though almost every reality show is completely retarded, this one is cute enough to rise to a 5. I'm a bit mystified by the sexual exploits of the three girls and Hef. You'd think they would at least throw us a bone on that one. Is Holly the only one for whom he takes the magic pill? What (who) do Kendra and Bridget get to do? So, I'm conflicted.
Unstoppable (2004)
If you're really, really bored...
...then see this movie. It is typical, B-action movie. Overacted, with the wide range of teen-aged sarcasm to deer-in-the-headlights serious-face. Wesley spends most of the movie looking like he's drugged and regretting something - like signing up for this flick. He does get to do some karate kicks and yelling, though. For Obradors, this is a big step-up. Unfortunately, she is made for T.V. and certain magazines. Her role begs to be taken seriously and such is impossible. Premise device has promise: hallucinations on command. Certainly gave the editor something to do. I pity those who shelled out money for this. They must have been ticked-off.
Slap Shot (1977)
One of the Best
Truly one of the greatest sports comedies of all time. There are plenty of comments which are saying just this for good reason. Not sure how one could have a spoiler in this one since there are no major plot twists (no major plot save a low-level hockey team trying to stay afloat). Paul Newman is the lead car in this character-driven flick. He doesn't over-shadow the rest of the excellent cast, many of whom have seemingly remained in obscurity, save this one great. Yet many have had busy, interesting careers.
I've seen Slap Shot several times and it ages very well, better than most of its time and genre. Though the men have better-defined parts (it is a story about hockey, after all), the women are great in their subtle, shadowy roles. They definitely help balance out what could have been simply (only) testosterone run amok.
Of course: Hanson, Hanson, Hanson!
Heck, I think I'll pop it in again!
