Purdah (2018)
Very powerful, very empowering
Purdah is a fantastic documentary, and it's a fantastic juxtaposition of sports documentary and cultural exploration. The driving force is Kaikasha's desire to play professional cricket, and that motivation is simple and pure. The challenges she face are not just related to the sport, and that's where the cultural aspects come in. Sports storylines are often a person in a battle with themselves to improve but in Kaikasha's community she has to overcome all sorts of social hurdles as well. The documentary isn't preachy, it just presents a person's dream and the struggles she has to overcome to pursue it. Those struggles are what they are, and it's hard not to find yourself rooting for her.
Beyond the Spectrum: Being Taken (2018)
If you're at all interested in aliens...
Right off the bat I'll say my thoughts on aliens are probably complicated. I feel pretty sure there must be alien life in the universe, but am also pretty skeptical that the stories we hear about alien abduction here on Earth are true. It all fascinates me though. As someone who used to listen to the Art Bell radio show for entertainment, this documentary really appealed to me. Watch and decide for yourself, but I feel confident that in watching this you'll be presented with information that challenges your assumptions and makes you think. At the end of the day that's what a good documentary does and this one delivers.
Hidden Light (2018)
Nice cinematography
Hidden Light had a good story and was very well shot. The cinematography really helped deliver this story. A totally solid indie movie.
Horror Hotel: The Movie (2016)
Campy movie for those that like campy movies.
Horror Hotel The Movie is actually an anthology of shorts running 20ish minutes each. If you like campy movies, break out the popcorn and beer and give this a watch because it knows what it's going for and that's good campy fun. The filmmakers seem to know that's what they're doing and they lean into it If campy movies are your thing you'll probably have fun with this.
