MeatEater (2012)
A diamond in the ruff
In this modern age of reality TV and adhd, when it comes to media we get a constant blitzkrieg of information. Much of this comes in the form of advertisements and images furthering this age of extreme consumerism. Meat Eater is such a breath of fresh air! Breath it in folks. Steven Rinella is the wonderful driving force behind this breath of fresh air we get to breath in so deep. Yes this is a hunting show. But it isn't just a hunting show. It is a cooking show as well. It is many things, and that is what makes is so great. See the world, take in all these beautiful places you probably will never go. The greens, blues, tans, and white landscapes. The majestic animals. The hunt. The kill. The ritualistic carving and cleaning of the animals. The fire. The meats cooking and smoking. Me salivating. This show is great in so many ways. The most important reason is Steve's realness. He's not afraid to admit his hunting mistakes, he doesn't always get the animal he came for and that's OK because it's more about the journey to get there then the end result. Do yourself a favor and take this journey with him and become a true Meat Eater. You will be a better person for it.
All Is Lost (2013)
A Very Frustrating Movie to Watch
I must admit the first 15 minutes of this movie was a little intriguing. I'm thinking who is this guy? What is going to happen next? How is he going to get himself out of this, etc etc. Classic survival questions. But this small feeling of excitement is just plowed over by unnecessarily long shots and scenes that do absolutely nothing but frustrate the viewer. Boring shots, pointless shots, ridiculous scenes and it just gets worse from there. You never get to know the character and what the hell he was doing in the first place so why do we gives a turkey? Buy the end of this movie I literally wanted to punch a hole through my TV. I will give this movie 5 stars simply because Robert Redford is an absolute legend and a brilliant actor. If he wasn't in this film I would've given it a 2.
The Place Beyond the Pines (2012)
Instant Classic
I can't understand how this movie isn't getting 9/10 or 4.5 - 5 stars across the board. After seeing this movie and then reading the reviews I've lost all hope that their are any real expert reviewers left and not just a bunch of worthless losers trying to make a name by ripping movies apart. I'm 34 years old now and since I was 5 years old I've seen pretty much every crime drama worth it's salt. Goodfellas, Casino, Heat, Carlito's Way, Donnie Brasco, Reservior Dogs, The Departed, etc etc. These movies in my opinion are the top tier of crime dramas, the best of the best. The Place Beyond the Pines is right up there at the same level as these movies i've just named, and in some aspects it's originality and superb writing and acting pushes it over the top. It is a travesty that this movie isn't getting RAVE reviews all over the place. But hey I've come to the realization that most people just don't have any common sense about real movies to know a timeless classic when they see one. Possibly because reality TV has been rotting their brains for the last 5 years.
