The House of the Devil (2009)
All style, no substance
I was reading all the praise for this on reddit and youtube after watching and genuinely thought it was some sort of post-ironic meme. But no, people genuinely seem to love this.
The aesthetics were absolutely on point. If you told me this was made in 1982 I would straight up believe you. I've never seen a throwback movie achieve this so well, so props for that.
Unfortunately that's the only real positive. There's no character development, very sub-par level acting and literally no plot. I found the last 15 minutes of "action" extremely cheap-looking and predictable.
I'm rating this a 3/10, +1 for aesthetics and another +1 for the Greta Gerwig car scene, that was genuinely pretty great and unexpexted (no spoilers, if you've seen it you know).
Don't let this put you off Ti West though. I haven't seen "Pearl" yet, but "X" is one of my favourite movies to come out this year. Unfortunately this one is a total miss for me.
Orphan: First Kill (2022)
Mawma... this is CAMP
As a huuuge fan of the first movie... this obviously did not top the original but I was still really impressed. They went from straight
-up horror to campy thriller, I think this move was unexpected but the best one they could've made. Reminds me of the genre shift from Child's Play to Bride of Chucky.
The biggest flaw is the characterisation. I wish they gave a little more depth to some of the other characters (particularly the Dad). The brother was one-dimensional and annoying as hell.
That twist tho - my jaw dropped. The power struggle between Esther and the mom was so entertaining. Loved it. The whole thing was ridiculous in the best way possible.
You Are Not My Mother (2021)
Weak
I wanna know what constitutes a "10" rating for some of these reviewers. Really? You're saying that THIS movie is perfect?
Started off boring, picked up the pace at the middle and then just got stupid. Like a juicy burger on stale bread. The potential was there but it just went nowhere interesting.
The Guilty (2021)
A very light 7.
I watched this solely because I love Jake Gyllenhaal lol and he didn't disappoint, his acting here is top-notch as always. Loved the twist.
The biggest downfall was the believability, as other reviewers have said the way the characters behaved in the 911 call centre was not realistic at all. Probably wouldn't rewatch but the movie was very tense and kept me engaged.
Psychopath with Piers Morgan (2019)
Embarrassing
This guy should be locked up forever... period. But the 2 professionals were so biased. We get it, he lacks empathy, but I want to understand his thought processes. Not just point fingers and make snarky remarks.
RuPaul's Drag Race UK vs the World (2022)
Enjoyable... however
Definitely the wrong format for an international season. 4/5 of the elminations were from the smaller franchises? This doesn't sit right with me. This season feels like a wasted opportunity to showcase some of the best international talent.
Rick and Morty: One Crew over the Crewcoo's Morty (2019)
Great episode!
Only started watching R&M this year, and loved the first three seasons. Thought the first two episodes of this season were pretty bland but this episode has brought it back for me. Excited to see what the rest of the season has to offer!
Primeval (2007)
Somewhat underrated
Definitely not as bad as made out to be. I liked how there was both the threat of the native gangs and the killer croc, I think that kept it interesting. The scenes with Gustave were epic. For some casual amusement I would definitely recommend.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)
Kinda disappointed but not surprised
I grew up on the spiderman comics, carnage was always my favourite villain. Seeing him on the big screen felt like a full circle moment. I REALLY enjoyed the transformation into carnage scene. Apart from this, nothing really happens. Didn't give an eff about the side characters. Should have been 2 hours long with venom and carnage having a couple smaller fight scenes throughout, building up to an epic finish. The 90 min runtime just isn't cutting it. Also, felt like it could've been darker? Imagine they went full horror. Would enjoy a little less of jokes and more brutality - it is carnage after all!
I feel like they have captured Venom's essence perfectly. His comedy is the best, he looks amazing, etc. The "lethal protector" lines gave me chills. As a movie, it was okay. As a longtime fan of carnage as a character I am a bit disappointed.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
Just fine
Am I mad that I watched it? Nah. Would I recommend to a friend? Also nah. I don't get the hype.
