Norman's Corner (1988)
early or pre-Seinfeld
I was watching Gilbert's stand up act when this one off came on. I could not believe how incredible he was as an actor, it is literally him doing a one man show since he goes the entire time with little or no play amongst other actors. AMAZING! I actually brought this up to Gilbert once and he was embarrassed by it. Honestly don't know why he would feel that way because his performance was incredible. And to think that this guy sits on this much talent is incredible.
Also, it is very Seinfeldian. Obviously Larry David wrote this BEFORE Seinfeld, and you can tell. Gilbert is by far the better actor, if you look at Seinfeld he always has an embarrassed/nervous smile on his face whereas Gilbert is by far the pro. This sitcom would not have done well on TV because it is too stagy -- it might have been due to a low budget that they did not have the capacity to make it with a "sitcom" feel.
Gilbert shines! It is interesting to ask yourself the obvious question, "Why wasn't this Seinfeld?" Too stagy, too "shticky" in terms of Gilbert's mannerisms it could have been an "All In the Family" type sitcom with embellished social issues from passersby...
Without question, worth watching...just to see this guy ACT!
Oxford Blues (1984)
A vehicle for moviemakers to capilize on Lowe's good looks
Back in the day, Rob Lowe was devoid of talent (as were many of the notorious Brat Pack members) but had that certain something that made people (mostly teens) want more. He was a very marketable commodity at the time, so what better role to give him than something that has already been done (i.e. little money spent writing, pre-production as possible before his fame expires as we all remember it did in the form of a threesome with two underage girls).
He can't act like Meryl Streep but he can deliver lines adequately and professionally; he is not so horrible that it is not watchable, and the story line is cute. Overall not an oscar winner but watchable. Some of his Brat Pack friends had big hits with their solo movies such as Ally Sheedy in Short Circuit, Emilio Estevez in Young Guns, etc.
Gone with the Wind (1939)
A young girls pursuit of the man she loves
SPOILERS The story is so simple a young girl loves a young boy who loves his 1st cousin set during the Civil War. At any point in time this could have been a simple story but since there are so many players (the war being 1 of them) everything seems to go hairwire quickly.
Scarlett has this obession with Ashley Wilkes and no one not even the audience can understand why this is. Everyone wants her to go with Rhett and she refuses. Sound familiar?
Scarlett marries Melanie's brother so that she can stay close to Mrs. Ashley Wilkes while Mr. Wilkes and her husband go off to war. I get the feeling that Scarlet never wanted to live a complex life but she is going to get one that is for sure. Scarlett's husband is killed and she is not sorrowful at all but pretends to be.They work in the hospital until Melanie gives birth, Captain Butler gets them half way home to Tara and then leaves.
You have to ask yourself, if he loved her so much why would he leave her at that awful juncture? I know he tries to explain it later but his explanation plays a bit short. So she pulls the strength out of herself somehow and gets them to Tara only to find it is in shambles and what is worst is that her mother is dead and her Father is crazy. Melanie is so weak she must stay upstairs in bed to rest. One day a crazy Yankee comes looking for money and Melanie shoots him from behind. They both act hurried to hide his body and bury him. I bet alot of that type of stuff happened back then. I think this forms some form of strange bond beteween them: first they brought life into this world together under highly dangerous times (Why didnt scarlet say she forgot to get melanie and the baby to get them out of the way?) and now they have murdered someone together? This would explain Melanie's insistance that Scarlet be welcomed at the party (where she wears a red dress)...
anyway, the interesting parts of the movie occur when Scarlet and Rhett go on a honeymoon and scarlet wakes up in the middle of hte night crying she screams out 'the fog the fog" and he is like "What?" she is like i am lost in the fog looking for someone, and i can't find him..i keep calling out..." he comforts her.
Then Melanie dies and Scarlet realizes that Asley has been lying to her all these years, he only could love Melanie. So Scarlet runs out into the streets to find Rhett and there is FOG everywhere...she is running and runnig and crying, "Rhett" "Rhett"...i expected the movie to end here with him coming out from the fog and saying "I love you Scarlett"...but it does not end that way...
