Roll Red Roll (2018)
Why do girls always go to the bathroom in pairs ?
I found it incredibly frustrating as this doc presented rape culture like a brand new topic. It's not. I was 11 when this happened and I remember talking with my friends and instead of focusing on the crime we simply stated, "that's why girls go to washroom together." What I do think it did a great job at is showcasing the uniqueness of America as a first world country. How this small town immediately rejected this girl, how people from out of town had to stand up for her, and it was on those court steps that I really felt something for other victims speaking out.
My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman: Kim Kardashian West (2020)
Here's the thing
I don't love Kim and I actually don't respect a lot of her decisions (making Spanx for pregnant women - are you kidding me? They're the last demographic you should be pushing body morphing too) but I love Dave. Plus the only 2 other reviews of this episode we're extremely bias in opposite directions. But then I started thinking about the Spanx thing and I remembered how every story about her pregnancy was about her weight. Everything. So maybe she has her reasons. I still think she should've thought her decisions through, but I don't know much about her except what I see and what I see is predominantly negative. So I watched it. Don't watch it. Nothing is really addressed, evey question is doged. Dave brings up her political views, no answer. Talk about Kaitlyn, doesn't bring up her homophobia. They talk about shareware (her Spanx thing) but they don't bring any of the pregnancy stuff either (in all fairness, not sure if the pregnancy thing happened yet and I don't care enough to look it up I doubt they would've talked about it either way.) It's just as basic and uninteresting as any other interview with her. Yet, if you stick it out you get genuine terror and she relives the night she thought she was going to get raped and murdered. This isn't till 10 minutes left but if you wanna see something real in this interview, that's the only place you're going to find it. While I watched i tried to give her the benefit of the doubt. They're a product of us. We watch we buy we have we tweet we make them who they are. So why do I have the right to speculate about everything she does? I don't. But I still do it, because she gets paid millions to promote unhealthy weight loss to young girls, because her family is in a place of power where they feel they can live their lives without explanation when it's hurting people, and because if she wants to be seen as a real person she's gonna have to act like it at some point. And even that feels harsh because if she is real we'll say she's fake anyways, wouldn't we?
