Beowulf & Grendel (2005)
Just Beautiful
I was anxiously awaiting this movie in my mailbox, and I was so happy when it finally appeared, days earlier than expected. I immediately inserted it into my DVD player.
I have to say to start with, when I saw another Gerard Butler movie, Attila, my only gripe, if you can call it that, was he didn't have his Scottish accent. (I love the tone of his voice, don't you? He should be the narrator of every film that's created from now on! I could listen to him for hours! His voice is very soothing to me. No wonder he was the Phantom. I'll start the petition...I guess the Shadow Company people agree with me. I love whatever accent he decides to have on any particular day, but since he's really Scottish, his Scottish accent is my favorite.) I was giddy with excitement when I heard his actual accent in B&G, so all my wishes came true with this movie. The accent, the beard, the furry clothes, the cuddly guy...OK, OK, I'll get back to the point! :)
I have to say, Iceland is a beautiful place. I will probably never have the luxury of traveling there, but with this movie, I guess I don't have to necessarily. I kept saying "that's so beautiful" every time a new scene came up. I found myself really enjoying the landscape as much as the plot. I was agreeing with Sturla when he said how Iceland was a silent character in the story.
Even though I was anxiously awaiting this movie, I was a little worried how much I would like it. I guess anything new will do that to you, but my fears were quieted when I actually got into the story.
I liked the special features they put on the DVD too. I was happy that they put most of Gerry's interviews about the movie on this DVD. I wish they put all of them on, but beggars can't be choosers, I guess.
I wish too that this movie would have made it to the big screen. Another great movie not given a chance! So many movies out there that weren't half as good as this one get air time in movie theaters, but this one doesn't. It isn't fair, I tell you. That will all change soon, for Gerry, it's the calming before the storm, really.
Throughout the film, I was worried about how cold it really was. I was looking at Gerry, and I realize he had a wet suit on, maybe not all of the time, but some, and I couldn't help but hope he was warm. That's the only thing that really got to me about this movie. Cold people.
One of my favorite things was said in the commentary, by I think the assistant director in the first scene with Gerry. She said, "Yes, Gerry really is as wonderful as he seems." It made my heart feel good.
Oh, and speaking of Gerry in this time period, I have to make one last comment...it kind of goes with this subject, I promise...He seems like he would be a, you know, bad ass guy on the war field, but he would come back to his tent or retreat or whatever, and be sweet and gentle to the woman in his life. Just an observation.

Great Movie!
I really enjoyed watching this movie. I think it has a really positive message that makes you feel good when you see it. I think more movies should be made like this that lift you up instead of tear you down.
I wish this movie was more widely known--it seems like the only ones who have heard of it are Gerry fans. I don't know if I had any one particular scene I liked more than another, maybe at the train station, but I really enjoyed this movie.
Gerry should be proud of this movie, and I am happy for him that he's finally getting the recognition he deserves. He's finally getting the chance to play characters with substance. Do you hear that Hollywood? When you give Gerard Butler a chance, he will impress you with his talent. I am one of the many cheerleaders Gerry has to keep him inspired and keep trying. We're out there Gerry. Yay for Gerry!

Gerry Equals Sunshine
I have to say I hated this movie. I don't like to say that because Gerard Butler is in it. About a half an hour of boring conversation, sorry to all who actually care about the plot, I started fast-forwarding to Gerry's scenes. I really don't know the ending, I was that bored with it. If Gerry wasn't in it, I probably either done one of two things: fell asleep or turned it off, but Gerry is the bright light of this movie, as he is with most of his earlier movies. If you're a fan of Gerry's don't worry, he's as adorable and precious as he always is, but if you actually want to watch the movie for the plot, good luck because you'll need it, either that or lots of coffee or soda to keep you awake!
4/10...and that's just because the casting director had the sense to put Gerry in this movie, even though they had no idea of how to spell his name!

Yay! Another Leo Movie to See!
I am surprised I liked this movie as much as I did. Well, I thought it was very well written, and funny--badly funny, like why am I laughing at jokes like this kind of funny, because it's such a dark movie.
When I found out that Leonardo DiCaprio was going to be working with Jack Nicholson I was so happy for him. I figured he would be excited at the chance, so I was excited for him. He held his own and he has a lot to be proud of, but why wouldn't he do well? He's one of the few talented actors out there worth paying $9.75 to see.
When I saw that Mark Wahlberg was in this movie, with Leonardo DiCaprio, all I was thinking of was the movie Basketball Diaries. They haven't worked together since then. I was pleasantly surprised to see the two working together again.
If you can call this a spoiler to the movie, here it is: The movie is very violent and bloody, but that's Martin Scorsese for you--it's not like I went in expecting Mary Had a Little Lamb or anything. If you see this movie, just remember, it's not for the faint of heart. At nearly the end of the movie, I gasped and put my hand up to my face, but there were a lot of times I could have done the same thing.
