Initiation (2020)
College drama meets horror
This isn't the typical Screamfest flick. The story offers plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing. The killer wears an ultra cool metal reflective mask and murders with multiple weapons, including a drill. There's a lot of social media so I don't recommend watching at a drive in, I couldn't see some of the messages. As fun and bloody as the movie is, the characters act like they're in a drama, which was refreshing.
The Final Girls (2015)
Smart with just enough camp
I really liked the concept of this movie, but something fell short for me in the execution. I just wished it had a higher ridiculousness threshold, like MORE CAMP, or had been slightly less campy like Scream but it was one step out of sync from being amazing for me! Still worth a watch for the laughs and the concept!
Scream (1996)
Forever the best slasher
Scream is Wes Craven's homage to the genre he had been apart of for years, when Scream was released in the mid nineties. As a horror fan, the film was revolutionary to the genre, because it infused fun and comedy into horror. If you are a horror fan, all the winks and references to seminal horror of the late seventies and eighties (ie Halloween and Friday the 13th) should be very enjoyable. This film might well be responsible for bringing horror back to the big screen, as it seemed destined for straight to video at the time, with it's humor, wit, and pacing.
Get Out (2017)
Horror is back at the oscars
I didn't expect to like this movie or be surprised by it, but I really liked it and was pleasantly surprised. There's enough humor to off-set the "horror" and the actors are great. The main character's TSA agent friend is an amazing touch - I can't imagine this movie without him. There's an optional ending, but I didn't watch it. I liked the original ending too much. Some people are avoiding "Get Out" because it's a "horror" movie, but it's worth seeing just because horror movies don't generally rate oscar nominations. What could have been a movie based racist stereotypes turns into so much more than that yet still still delivers uncomfortable truths. Humor and horror rule the day and Kaluuya is fantastic! Do yourself a favor and see this one.
