Fury (2014)
Furry!
I watched this film, ending up forcing myself through parts, just to be sure of what the hype was about.
Poor. In a word. It seems people have mistaken this film, in my opinion, for a artistic anti war film. I don't concur. It's gratuitous in parts, totally inaccurate and the only reason it got a 5 star rating was the tanks. Brilliantly taken care of by the staff at Bovington tank museum (if you've not been, go. It's a great day out, some of it emotional to see) and the tanks are the real stars here. The thing that stands out most to me, is a fact. The fact that the tanks involved would have, in all probability, been used to murder people (war is murder for certain) and were used to kill "on screen". And if the ending with the tank is brilliant to you, I guess I'll stick with reality and beg to differ.
Olympus Has Fallen (2013)
Olympus has regrets.
Well you would if you'd sponsored this pile.
I think the director Antoine Fuque actually fuqued it up.
How are there no automatic weapons available in the Whitehouse? Only outdoors and about 200 agents. The way they present themselves for assassination is, in my opinion, comedy. Think butler, Eckhart and co should have been replaced by Ben Stiller and the likes. Although the acting would still be as stiff.
Lacks imagination, direction, script etc etc. I don't expect much from the cast to be honest, in any film, but in this case they've stuck with the task at hand and that alone gives it the 3 star rating.
Windtalkers (2002)
It was never going to be a 10
Cage. That ensures not getting a ten. His acting, as always, is... Let's say it will always leave something to be desired. Like talent.
The premise is fantastical, and it's based on real events. Beach is a definite plus, but the script is lacking and the action sequences are laughable.
That aside, the film trundles on from scene to drab scene until we get some action. Often laughable but action nonetheless. The stereotypical up his own ass Englishman, and the southern red neck racist have been done to death, let it go. There are a few moments that hit the mark, which make the film watchable. As long as you forget the dire acting, action and P Poor casting decisions.
The Terminal List (2022)
Pratt?
What can I say? Well anything I like, within reason, apparently. That said there's not much I can say about this waste of talent. Positively anyway.
Negatively, I didn't get past the first half hour of the first episode. Why? For one, the script. I wasn't impressed at all. Bog standard run of the mill stuff. Watching this haphazard bunch of 'special forces' really brings home how very 'special' these people are. The route through the sewers and the laughable methods employed to navigate them was reminiscent of the drama teacher telling us to act out our own version of what we thought being a special forces operative was about.
What finally killed off any interest, was the scene with the metal grill. Dark sewer, night vision goggles employed, come across a grill that needs removing, naked flame cutting gear appears, they cut through. Great! But while this is going on the rest of the group are waiting around, with their night vision goggles still on. Now I may be a layman but......
Whatever, you tell me.
Narrow Margin (1990)
Trite nonsense.
Hackneyed, clichéd, nothing original. Feel free to use your own words.
Not much going for it other than SOME of the acting. Hackman is his usual Hackman. Most of the others being also rans, even J. T. Walsh and James Sikking. I know it's an oldish film, but this thing is so dated the majority of the actors in it were has beens when it was filmed.
Most of the scenes are preposterous. The usual automatic machine gun fire that fails to hit a single intended target, hitmen who are such bad shots that they'd struggle to get a part in a blue movie.
If you're into films with trains in them, may I suggest The Railway Children?
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
Damp Wick
No idea how the ratings are as high as they are. If you thought the first one was enjoyable but the 3rd one was bull, read on.
Just as the body count in the 3rd was ridiculous, this is even more absurd. Seems after coming up with the bullet proof suit the writers etc thought it a good idea to make sure everyone has one. These giant men sent to kill Wick all wearing suits, raising the jacket to protect their heads was a sight I found so funny. He's the best hitman on the world, how do we kill him? I know, we'll send a blind man!! Pathetic. And he can dodge bullets and he knows where everyone is. You could say it looked choreographed.
Now, about the DJ! They may have well cut the scenes directly from the Warriors. Better film, done better and that isn't a great film. For those of you who have never heard of the Warriors, go watch it. For those of you that have, skip this nonsense.
Sherlock Holmes (2009)
I've just watched a great film
What can I say? Never been interested much with Robert Downey junior, not Jude law. Guy Ritchie films? Not much different. But I think I'm a new born fan of all three. The film is entertaining, humorous, has its twists and turns and scripted so eloquently. It's total fun, Mark Strong is a diamond, Jude Law too as a supporting actor was quite a scene stealer. It is so well cast that I take my hat off to all concerned. Robert Downeys rendition of an English accent isn't what I expected, it's very much spot on. He's come a long way from his downward spiral on drugs. All credit to him. Can't wait for the next film!! Or maybe not of they ain't happy.
The American (2010)
Clooney again
I picked this film and started watching it after a few beers and ended up going to bed before it finished. I restarted it the next evening, sober, and realised the reason that I probably want to bed was because it was slow. Ponderous, boring in parts, some parts were intriguing though. Gratuitous nudity, I didn't really think it was needed, it came across as padding to me. Although gorgeous padding, it's still padding at the end of the day. The script isn't exactly without merits but I wasn't entirely convinced by its standard. I've seen many better films and also many worse. Would I watch it again? No!
Red Notice (2021)
Reynolds again
I have to say that I don't usually watch films with Dwayne 'the rock' Johnson in. Always seen him as overrated. The ONLY I decided to give this a go was because Ryan Reynolds was in it. Usually funny, so I thought why not?
To be honest I thoroughly enjoyed it, and have to say that the interaction with Johnson was good. Seems he too, had some comedic timing. I gave this an eight, above the average. I would, and probably will, watch this again as no doubt I missed some of the more subtle comedy. I even enjoyed the cameo, always easy on the eye as she is, all told of you've not seen it, give it a go.
The Professionals (1966)
What can you say?
Not only Lee Marvin, Burt Lancaster, Woody Strode, Bob Ryan but the beautiful Claudia Cardinals. Great film, brilliant actors. The late great Jack Parlance, always a good performance puts in a an equally great part. Something about the films I grew up with but that were nea
rly always well put together. This is no exception. The parts chosen for each actor were near perfect. Ralph Bellamy, a Hollywood stalwart, puts in a good supporting role. The minor players too are enjoyable to watch, and the interaction of the cast is just about perfect. Viva the old westerns, and Viva the sadly lost actors whom the youth of today get to seldom see the like of. Enjoy.
Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan (2019)
Danger closed!
It's a pretty good film for the most part. Some parts may piss you off though. We've got no bullets (virtually) shell our positions! How slow to react? They'd have been long dead by the time the artillery got round to it. I'm sure a delay may happen in real life, but not so slowly. I grew up with Vietnam in the 60's watching it on the news. Living in Singapore at the time I met Anzacs and yanks on RnR. All brave men. I give this film a 9, it's good, not only in its (mainly) realistic simulations but also the acting of all involved. Very well presented also and the locations are pretty much what you'd expect for the bush.
Dark Blue (2002)
Really!!?
Watched it but never gave it a review nor rating. Put it on again, remembered that I'd actually seen it. It's s very poor film to say the least. Even the great Kurt Russell couldn't lift it. Give it a miss.
Savages (2012)
Really? Again?
Couldn't get past the first 15 minutes. The monotone voice over, the bland storyline. Didn't watch it. Couldn't watch it. Is this what Oliver Stone is down to? I'll pass.
Darc (2018)
Darc! It certainly was.
It starts off reasonably, although clichéd, then loses itself in the middle, only to come back stronger, then fizzle out totally. I was hoping he'd die in the end, just so there's no darc 2, but life isn't always fair.
How It Ends (2018)
It would have had a 5 but....
People with no vision wrote this. Don't bother unless you're desperate. Ending? Shame, shame, shame on you. Pathetic. Predictable too. Very. How the hell they Forrest Tucker to take part in this I'll never know.
Message Man (2018)
Jason Bourne eat your heart out
Can't believe it's got a 6 stars rating. It starts off predictably and carries on being so. We've all seen the film's like that. Bourne too. Predictable but I enjoy them. Only this one doesn't have Damon in it so it's better. Hats off to the whole production team. Even better than the Bond franchise. And by that I mean the good ones. Daniel Craig. I do hope there's a follow up.
21 Bridges (2019)
Well done Chad
Never really watched much with him in, but I totally enjoyed this. Predictable? In part. Clichéd? Definitely. But a good all round film. No spoilers, just sit back and absorb. I will watch it again.
Reacher (2022)
The dwarf returns
Finally, Jack Reacher as he should be. Massive. I enjoy the Tom thumb films, but enjoyed this a whole lot morer. How disappointed I was when I realised there was only the one series!!!! Can't wait for the next one. I think his brother is the Ukrainian President. 🤔 Nerves of steel.
Cross of Iron (1977)
Anti war
One of the best anti war films ever. The cast are exemplary. James Mason an always great actor. Backed up by so many more, always enjoy it. Peckinpah always delivers. Cobourn too. Not seen it? Do yourself a favour, watch it!
Sniper: Assassin's End (2020)
Really?
Can't believe it's been marked so low. Apart from a few quirks I think it's an ok film. Yes I'd watch it again. If you like the transporter franchise this is a bit more highbrow. Trade up. You never know, you may get a hankering for good films.
L.A. Confidential (1997)
LA LA LA
Enjoyed it.
Had a 9 for a while.
Lost it a little though. Not a Russell Crowe fan, but yes I'm a bit more inclined towards his action after this.
Don't do the spoilers. Enjoy it as it unfolds. Some bits you'll get, others will dawn on you.
Company of Heroes (2013)
Really?
It's got Vinnie 'the thug' Jones in it. Avoid at all costs unless you're a mindless idiot that likes footballers as actors. Apparently my earlier review was too short. Chelsea thug Jones fails to capture the acting genre with his usual pathetic input.
Vantage Point (2008)
Vantage missed a point?
It's an ok film. Good acting. Intriguing at times. Always interesting. BUT! A terrorist that baulks at killing children? You get marked down for that. They don't give a flying one. Keep it real guys, these fanatics kill everyone.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Blunder woman
I'd give this a miss.
Apart from the fast forward storyline, and mediocre plot, what grips my **** is the "Happy holidays". Why? It's called Christmas. And it's Merry Christmas. Hanuka? Happy holidays. Divali? Happy holidays. Chinese New year? Happy holidays. Etc etc etc.
Affliction (1997)
Meh!
It moves like chilled molasses.
Good acting, but not good enough to avoid skipping through.
You get the idea of what's occurring part way through and there is no surprise at the ending.
I won't be watching it again.
