How to insult fat people and get away with it...
10 August 2022
It feels like someone made a bet with the Farrellys that they couldn't get away with making an entire movie of fat jokes. And the Farrelys responded by saying, "Not only will we do that, but we'll get everyone to think we're fighting fat prejudice while we do it!"

And to their credit, it seems like they wildly succeeded, judging by the reviews here. Put a feel good ending on it and suddenly all the degrading "rhino" and "whale" and "you can't unsee that" jokes are forgiven, because surely the movie makers don't feel that way, they're just highlighting the true ugliness of society. Except they are not, they deliver them as jokes, all dressed up like jokes, stuffed as many as they can in, fully intending the audience to laugh riotously along, as opposed to presenting them as cringe-worthy tone-deaf discomforting words the audience bristles against because of the pathos you've awoken in them.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter much. And it's up to everyone else to decide (as they already have) what this movie meant to them. I just had to add my worthless two cents and point out (as countless others have done) the diabolical cunning. They would have handily won that bet.
