Gnomeo & Juliet (2011)
Wonderful Action with Great Music and Heart!
Gnomeo and Juliet, lets be real you saw the trailer you know its going to be campy and if your spending your hard earned money on it you probably think its going to be funny or you have children who think that. Let me tell you I found it hysterical! I was in a foul mood only going to the movie because it was promised and expecting a typical trip to the cinema filled with "Mommy, I'm Bored!" and "Mommy can we go?" which is so often the case as of late. Boy was I surprised! Not only did this film manage to enthrall and engage MY pesky kiddos, it did the same for the whole theater! Parents, you know what I am about to say is true, the mandatory bathroom visits in the middle of the movie and demands for more popcorn and soda... Yeah... Didn't Happen at least not anywhere near me! And we did go to a PACKED showing! The kids were ooohing and aweing! Everyone laughed! And during the climax... some gasped... my girls climbed in my husbands lap as they were so worried for Gnomeo and Juliet! And a good tell of a great time, the audience clapped for the movie and stayed to watch credits even tho there were no bonus scenes as if no one wanted to the ride to end.
Okay there are those who criticize it, and No this is NOT Shakespeare and it clearly lets you know that in the beginning! And also, Patrick Stewart gives voice to Shakespeare's statue and he too agrees that this is NOT classical! He also gets one of the better lines in the film! There are several throwbacks to Shakespeare which I will forgo telling so you can enjoy yourself. You go to a kids film for some fun, some silliness, and hopefully Happy Faces on your kids when you walk out of the theater! If you get that, the filmmakers succeeded. In my case, they did! I must add in the case of the kids I saw in the hall after, several groups... they did as well! I can say I can be and have been hard on films made for adults, my past dictated some higher standards having known many in the industry. And I have also been hard on Animated films, finding faults in the little inconsistencies. But I would not discourage a parent from taking their child to see a movie so filled with fun. The flaws that others have found in the film-making of this movie I did not notice... I was too busy having FUN! Really... Come ON! Voices by Micheal Caine, Maggie Smith and Patrick Stewart! And let's not forget Dolly Parton and Ozzy Osbourne. James McAvoy does wonderfully in giving life to Gnomeo and Emily Blunt is also amazing. But the be all standout character for this film was the music. The subtle ways Elton John's music was used to heighten the drama and create a comedy was priceless. I still can't get Benny and Jetts out of my head and they only used a few chords in the movie! When we came home my girls asked about the songs and we spent a few minutes on YouTube watching Elton John videos only to have the girls realize some of the jokes from the movie about Elton John and his crazy glasses! In short, I really enjoyed this movie. It is fun and moves quickly! If you like the ads or the actors or music give it a chance!
Playing for Keeps (1986)
Yeah its cheesy
Come on its great 80s fun. Teens dressing up as boy-scouts to earn money, convincing friends to help with a dream. The smartest little sister on the screen I just cant help but Love the game they play. Try it if your in the mood for something silly and fun. Hey,Its a Weinstein (think Scream, Emma, Addicted to Love and Kate and Leopold) film one of the firsts. You get to see young actors trying to make their way (Marisa Tomei is in it way before she got famous or won an award.) and some older ones (Harold Gould) helping them out. Now I certainly hope that is enough of a reason to try this film. Hey if nothing else, you get watch Eighties Hair and listen to some good eighties music.
Primeval (2007)
Amazing but I Really Liked It
I found myself intrigued by the ads. I was at first a little misguided but after finding the truth and reading the National Geographic Article, I ended up enjoying the movie ever SOOO much more. I could really see the story behind the movie. I also found the civil war bits and stuff about Burundi and Rwanda very provoking. This movie is WAY BRUTAL and VERY Gory. It is a good ride. You go into it knowing its a movie about a huge croc. Come on, you know its going to be exaggerated for the screen and you know by how much just by the movie poster. So stop watching slasher and gore fests expecting an Oscar Movie. Some are fun wonderfully icky rides.
Heroes: Chapter Five 'Hiros' (2006)
OH Yeah!
This episode really shows the characters. It shows how they can interact and become more than their individual selves. I really enjoyed Clare's payback. It was way too much fun. I find it interesting that her father protected her and yet there is foreshadowing of her demise by her father. I begin to wonder if we are not all tricked by who Syler really is! And who is the guy who wipes minds? And why does he wear the necklace that is the same symbol as Niki's tattoo? These little mysteries and character interactions are just making this one amazing TV show. I love being able to watch something that isn't all about Reality or Game shows. This is most definitely the best show this season! Thanks!
Heroes: Chapter Two 'Don't Look Back' (2006)
This was my clincher
I am not sure if this will contain a spoiler so I checked it just in case. I missed the first Episode of Heroes and this was the one that got me hooked. See I think I watched it three times. Thank you internet! See, I rarely get to watch TV as I have small children, so the internet is my best friend right now. However, I am trying to catch Heroes as it is aired now. I just cant wait to see what is going to happen next. Some of my favorite parts are when HIRO yells "I did it!" and roams New York, and when Clare gets hit by the quarterback and has that look of disgust on her face as she straightens her neck out! I am so excited to see what is going to happen next. Oh, and the references to old comic books! That is just an added bonus!
