Klaus (2019)
A Stand Out in an Overwhelming Amount of Christmas Movies!
I am very stingy with Stars while rating movies, and even less inclined to take the time to write a review! But this movie is a Hidden Gem in an overwhelming crowded selection of Holiday movies! I know it is a cliché but I must say this is a MUST for viewers from Toddlers to Great-Grandparents!! Along with a heartfelt story; the animation is superb, the actors outstanding and the music delicious. This movie is definitely going on my (very short) list of Christmas movies to watch Every Year!!
Red Notice (2021)
JUST INCREDIBLY FUN!
The comedic timing in this film is perfect from every single actor, along with the moments of necessary drama. The story is fun, and actually quite believable, along with an fantastic fight/flight scenes. Great costumes and set designs, along with exotic locations with constant twists & turns. Ignore the negative reviews and just have fun, it's not meant to be James Bond! I am really, REALLY hoping there will be a sequel!
The Harder They Fall (2021)
Music could be overwhelming.
This movie features a great story, acting, scenery, editing - however, the overly loud musical score made it almost unbearable for me to watch. I do understand the music was probably chosen to fit the premise of an all Black western, but the volume could have been lowered, I had my remote in my hand the entire time scrolling the volume up & down to avoid being overwhelmed. I do hope they do a sequel!
The Long Call (2021)
Ignore Negativity!
I truly don't understand the negative reviews, especially the one's complaining about how "slow" the going is. I enjoy a fast-paced action-a-minute film as much as anyone, but that is not always necessary. I was hooked in the first moment with the unconventional relationship of a police detective, leading into absolutely gorgeous scenery and the accompanying music. Each character is complex and the way they are interwoven is realistic and heartfelt. The writers do an excellent job with the fluidity of possible suspects and motives, and the acting is outstanding. I hope there is a Season 2!!
Dalgliesh (2021)
A Standing Ovation!
I am 64 years old and have been reading mysteries and watching movies & TV series in the genre my entire life. Even in the one's I truly enjoy I have usually figured out the "who & why" by the end, but not with these! 6 episodes in Season 1 with each "story" taking 2 episodes, which is the perfect amount of time. I was not familiar with DCI Dalgliesh and I have been bowled over with the depth of this character, and the actor who portrays him. The supporting cast for each of the stories is superb. And as is often the case with ACORN TV productions the settings are fascinating and the scenic vistas are gorgeous. I am tight-fisted about giving 10 stars, but this series deserves each one! I am passionately hoping there will be a Season 2!
CODA (2021)
A MUST SEE!!
Getting a subscription to Apple TV is money well spent if the only thing you watch is this movie! CODA stands for Children Of Deaf Parents, but don't let that make you think this is interesting for a limited audience, everyone has something to learn from this. In this time of bullying and looking at what makes us different, rather than how we are the same, this movie provides clarity about how we judge others & ourselves. At the heart of this it is about family, growing up, community and so much more. I laughed. I cried. I was forced to reflect on how limited my version of the world around me is in ways I never realized, yet it is not heavy handed or "preachy." I very, very seldom give a rating of 10 stars but this movie deserves each one of them.
Brexit: The Uncivil War (2019)
Never Understood Brexit Before This
I live in the USA and I will admit I never paid much attention to Brexit until the voting was over and I have seen the repercussions, good and bad. The acting in this is superb and shows what happens when politicians stop listening to the people they represent, as well as an underbelly of people who will twist motives for their own sinister goals. This film definitely captures the truth that there are no easy answers and nothing is ever simple.
The Next Three Days (2010)
Compassion & Suspense weave together for a masterful story unlike any other of this genre!
My husband & I just watched this, November 2021, in spite of it being released in 2010. Not sure how we missed it because we are huge Russell Crowe fans and he does not disappoint in this film giving a top-notch performance! He is surrounded by a supporting cast who are well chosen for their particular roles and create many touching moments as well as suspense. Highly recommended!!
The Operative (2019)
Perfect until the ending!
My husband and I were on the edge of our seats loving all aspects of this film. The acting, story, weaving present with past events. Really complex characters and no easy answers when it comes to opposing countries and complicated cultures. This movie refused to try to convince you that choosing a side is easy. And then they messed it up in the last 10 minutes!! Just pick an ending!! Kill the couple or let them escape to somewhere together. But they just left everything like they had suddenly run out of film in the middle of a scene.
