Survivor (2000)
A quality resurgence of the best series on television.
Ever since the beginning SURVIVOR has been my favorite TV show. However, most other people would agree with me that the series had gone downhill from the first series on the island of Palau Tiga. the reason SURVIVOR originally worked was because it had a dynamic cast full of interesting people (such as Richard, Susan and Rudy). All three of these people made it into the final 4. However, recently we have plagued with more un-exciting, boring people in the final 4 (such as Kim J, Ethan, Vecepia and Paschal). I think SURVIVOR: THAILAND could reverse that trend. Even though the final 4 is a long way off, the contestants seem to be more interesting (such as Clay, Robb and Shii Ann). I think that this could make SURVIVOR: THAILAND the best Survivor series since the unbeatable original.
Everwood (2002)
An amazing show.
"Everwood" is an excellent show. It has the rare possesion of combining poignant and intense drama with some witty feautres. Treat Williams excels as Dr. Andy Brown, a recent widower who moves his son and daughter from a big city to the small town of Everwood, Colo. The whole town and his children would hate him, but he provides free medical service. Williams (one of my favorite actors) excels as Dr. Brown in one of the most amazing performances ever. Gregory Smith (Dr. Brown's son) is great also. A truly wonderful show.
Friend or Foe (2002)
Terrible, terrible, terrible.
When, Game Show Network unveiled it's late night line up, it brought in two semi-decent shows (Whammy! or Russian Roulette). However, in the middle of those two shows they stuck in a piece of trash, "Friend or Foe?".
The show starts with people picking partners based on how less-embarrassing something they did in the past is. The partners then answer simple question within a very generous time limit (yet some pairs STILL manage to mess up). The lowest ranking team at the end of each round goes to "trust box" where they either vote friend or foe. This is the most irrelevant part of the game, because it is not about trust, as they could have had "pick a number 1 or 2". Anyway, if both people "vote" friend then they split their petty winnings evenly. If they both "vote" foe then they each leave with nothing. If one goes "friend" and one goes "foe" then they split the money 50-50.
Anyway, when the final group is decided, they go play "Right or Wrong" (very creative name) where they get simple questions to build up their bank (known as trust fund). They head to the trust box where they divide up their money.
While all of this is bad, what makes the show terrible is the host Kennedy. Kennedy is extremely obnoxious and annoying. She seems to think she is funny, even though the "jokes" she says are terrible. Overall, I find myself tuning into "Whammy!" at 10:00 then doing something else for a half hour when "Friend or Foe" comes on then tuning back in at 11 for "Russian Roulette".
Russian Roulette (2002)
A brilliant game show.
"Russian Roulette" is a great game show. The falling down holes concept is interesting, memorable contestants are cast and host Mark L. Walberg is great. He actually has personality and makes jokes unlike many of the other hosts on Game Show Network. Sadly, it looks like it will be canceled in a matter of weeks. Good luck Russian Roulette.
Whammy! The All New Press Your Luck (2002)
A decent enough show
Being a big fan of the '80s show Press Your Luck, I was excited when I heard they were filming new episodes. After watching two weeks of nearly nonstop commercials, the previews disappointed me somewhat, as the show looked like nothing compared to the original show. I watched the first episode, and it was just about what I expected, overly high-teched and glitzy show, but it wasn't bad. I'd give it 6 out of 10. However, if you are a big fan of the original, don't get your hopes up for Whammy!
