The Good Doctor (2017)
Interesting series but rather inflated and hugely exaggerated
The series' storyline was interesting enough to keep me hooked. Loved some of its heartwarming scenes and also how each character, including their professional/personal relationships developed over time.
However, I hated the fact that these doctors were like irritating flies on the wall listening to every patient's personal conversations and then weighing in as if they were professional counselors, when it was none of their business. Also, their patients can go from lucid and healthy to almost dying in a matter of seconds. Expect these annoying behaviors in every episode and I roll my eyes every time that happens. Continuity problems as well especially with patients with brain surgeries, they come out of surgery with a full head of hair!
The Punisher (2017)
Entertaining as an action drama. Don't expect superhero abilities.
Overall an entertaining action series to watch. The story flowed and they concluded each season well. However, don't expect superhero abilities unlike other Marvel superheroes. He's just a very good combat soldier that somehow tanks mortal wounds and never dies. No special mutation that keeps him alive. The rage gore was so realistic that there were some parts I actually cringed.
Season 1 was way much better than Season 2. It focused on his character development. Season 2 became messy where he was entangled in a web that happened to cross his path, on top of battling his loose end with Jigsaw. It was very messy because multiple things were happening at the same time but he somehow managed to schedule his time and appear everywhere where he was needed. Madani's baggage and Krista's affair made this really confusing and complicated.
But still, this series was entertaining enough to sustain itself. Enjoyed it!
Greenleaf (2016)
Season 1 was promising and exciting, it got painful from Season 2.
A wasted potential that played on the sinister power/political maneuvers of charismatic Christian churches. Christians would shout blasphemy at the way the script was written but that's what made this show intriguing.
Season 1 had great plot twists, cliffhangers and character development that made you wanting more. The scriptwriting was strong in the conversational side of the show. I liked how certain characters smoothly slid in shade or had mic drop moments. However, the show writers were really lazy, plugging plot holes with an easy solutions rather than taking a bold move by killing or destroying a character. They also ignorantly left some story loopholes unplugged, thinking we'd convenient forget about them. For example, Season 1 was super lusty with some sex scenes. After that, it's like everyone forgot the sinful animals they were and became good Christians.
As the episodes wore on, almost every character got bloody annoying. They pretty much enabled each other's idiosyncrasies and sometimes you wonder how they can on one hand be toxic with each other, but still unconditionally love each other, all in the same scene. You would even begin to hate the protagonist because she would annoyingly feed into the culture she swore to not become.
My recommendation, watch Season 1 for some excitement. But don't waste your time afterwards.
Kim's Convenience (2016)
Had so much promise, won many awards but eventually imploded and ended disappointingly
The public spat between the actors and scriptwriters/producers really soured my enjoyment of this series, culminating in a wth and hugely disappointing moment at the last episode of the finale season. Why? Because people couldn't come together, unite and give this series the final respects it deserved.
As an Asian, I felt immense pride watching this series anchored around an Asian community in a predominantly Caucasian country. I found joy in resonating with the Asian stereotypes and jokes. It was no doubt a hit and I'm glad it won its share of awards in the first few seasons.
It was disappointing to see how it was suddenly cancelled and eventually how the dirt was aired, revealing much discord among the actors and the production.
How has something that originated from an Asian (Ins Choi) end up being usurped by Kevin White - who would know nothing about the Asian culture? The way Season 5 was done felt half-hearted, the jokes were mostly unfunny and how it ended - insincere. I've seen many solid TV series conclude succinctly after their many seasons. It ends with a sense of nostalgia and with loose ends tied up. This? Abrupt and a sense of leaving the viewers a "That's it?!" moment.
Such a pity. In the end, everyone loses.
Fate: The Winx Saga (2021)
Harry Potter wannabe with a stupid storyline and acting
Don't waste your time with this rubbish. A Harry Potter wannabe trying to be badass with vulgarities, gay/sexual themes, violence and gore that are neither here nor there. Stupid storyline and weak acting.
All in all, just a weak show about a bunch of fairies.
Hjem til jul (2019)
Cliched.
"I'm leaving for Bali... for my Bachelor's degree". HAHAHA. Try harder scriptwriters 🙄
Criminal: UK (2019)
Boring AF
Which genius decided to put the pilot episode a stupid, one location, hour long interrogation?! You lost me at Episode 1. Didn't bother watching further.
The Spy (2019)
Boring Borat
I had high hopes for this. I tried giving this series a try but gave up after episode 5. Sacha Baron Cohen as Ali-G and Borat showed his versatility in accents and get-ups, and as a spy, I thought he'd be a good one. But don't bother. He was awkward, stiff and a frankly, really laughable spy. It makes the Mossad look like a joke. The storytelling and dialogue were poor as well. I can't believe I wasted my time on this.
Hotel Mumbai (2018)
Cheesy scriptwriting and lame acting
Expected so much more from this movie. I spent the time laughing at scenes than empathizing to the situation.
