Hellraiser: Hellseeker (2002 Video)
Slick, better than average HELLRAISER installment
22 October 2002
HELLSEEKER is nowhere near as well done as the previous HELLRAISER installment, INFERNO. That said, if you are in the mood for another mindbender in the well-worn tradition of JACOB'S LADDER, you could do a lot worse than HELLSEEKER. Dark, slick, fast paced, sexy, gory, and brief (a scant 86 minutes before the credits roll), HELLSEEKER is never less than entertaining and never more than only slightly confusing. This is pure junk food for the mind of a horror buff, and it tastes pretty damn good.

Glitter (2001)
Jaw-droppingly bad performance from Mariah Carey.
14 February 2002
First of all, let's set the record straight. The sheer awfulness of "Glitter" has been so overhyped that one may be expecting a laugh-a-minute, so-bad-its-good party flick in the grand tradition of "Plan Nine From Outer Space". In reality, however, the film itself is made with no less competence than the average USA Networks or Showtime original production. In fact, there is evidence that director Curtis-Hall may have been able to bring the same gritty energy to this film that he brought to "Gridlock'd", had he not had Executive Producer Mariah Carey and her henchmen doting over his work. Bad film lovers will unfortunately find little here to rave about. Bad ACTING lovers on the other hand will be jumping for joy and awaiting, with baited breath, every single syllable that is allowed to escape form the film's "star" Mariah Carey.

Carey is so unbelievably, outrageously terrible in conveying even the slightest of emotions throughout the entire running time of "Glitter" that watching her performance is at the same time both fascinating and deadly boring. I'm really not sure if Ms. Carey's marionetted corpse could have put less intensity into this role. Every smile looks forced, every motion wooden, and everytime a tear is to be shed, Mariah resembles a mannequin wetted conservatively with Visine. This is, to be sure, one of the worst leading perfomances in motion picture history.

Overall, "Glitter" must be cherished forever as a sterling example of what can, and will go wrong when a diva like Carey is given free-range to create her own film with no one allowed to reign her in. Then again, there's always Britney Spears in "Crossroads"...

Excellent, unforgettable short film.
31 July 2001
I caught this flick on Cinemax late one night, and I'm glad I did. This is simply one of the most original, unforgettable American short films that I have ever seen. I expect this one to be infamous soon.

The flick follows an angry young Texan tattoo and piercing fetishist who has grown tired of the everyday body art. He is in search of the ultimate physical expression of his inner rage, which he finds in the garage of an extremely creepy individual. I won't reveal the nature of said "body art", as this is the film's main focus, but rest assured, it is both hilariously outrageous, and terrifyingly plausible.

I loved the way this film combined raw human emotion, cringe-inducing suspense, and uproarious comedy, often all in the same breath. Both the film-making and the acting is top-notch. If there is any way that you can see this film, do so. You will not forget it.

Made (2001)

Excellent crime dramedy is a modern classic.
31 July 2001
Jon Favreau's directorial debut is an amazing feat. Anyone expecting a "Swingers" redux (and would have been damned-well happy with one), will be totally blown away by this dark, thrilling, hillarious film. "Made" is probobly the first American independent film to deal with crime in a totally original manner since "Reservoir Dogs". And like "Dogs," "Made" has an uncanny grace in mixing serious drama with uproarious comedy.

I hope "Made" does better than "Dogs" did during its theatrical run. Favreau's flashy, yet intimate craftmanship deserves to be seen on the big screen. However it fares, rest assured that "Made" will be one of those films that everyone will be talking about, and telling their friends to see. It's that good. And, if Vince Vaughn isn't nominated for an Oscar for his performance here, then something is truly wrong with the system.

The other, other Jon Faverau Vince Vaughn flick
31 July 2001
This is a well written, well acted, and horribly photographed character play about a group of diner patrons who decide to split the winnings of a lottery ticket of a recently deceased man. Plot twists and double crosses abound in this rickety comedy.

Overall, this flick may be better appreciated as another chance to catch Jon Faverau and Vince Vaughn on screen together. Although they both have supporting roles (like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon in "School Ties"), the fact that independent cinema's finest creative duo both star in this one, makes it even more worth a look.
