Walker: Independence (2022)
Better actors than Walker makes this 100% more watchable
Everything wrong with Walker (aka Jared Padalecki) is missing from the prequel making it possible to watch without cringing. It's obviously not perfect, but you can bypass most of the issues pretty easily if you're just looking to escape from reality for 40 min. Even the overused trope of the dead spouse is easier to ignore without the awful shout into the night. The discrepancies in authenticity are also not as evident since they aren't comparing things to modern day common knowledge. And no bratty teens is another plus. All in all, this show should continue while the modern Walker should be cancelled. It's amazing what one bad actor can do to a whole show. Walker IP just proves that any competent actor can make mediocre material watchable.
Supernatural: Carry On (2020)
Still not laughing
When something embarrassing or tragic happens, people always say "we'll laugh about this later". Well, I'm still not laughing and it's been a year. The finale is still a literary and visual disaster with more narrative holes than times Dean died throughout the 15 yrs. Yes! The episode is that bad. It tries to recapture a "brothers only" storyline in a way that you could watch the series premier and the finale and think you understand 15 yrs of the show. If I had to watch this drivel for 15 yrs.... well, I wouldn't. And I don't think anyone else would either. If they wanted to bring things full circle, they should have brought it back to season 6. Because honestly, the original concept of the show was fully resolved with Swan Song. That show ended and the next 10 years was spent telling a different kind of story. But the writers didn't honor their own work. I know they claim they tied up that story in the previous episode, but that is a literary cop out, especially as all it did was erase plot. This is truly an awful example of trying to be clever with the full circle trope. Even the visual call backs are trite and the actual production value is embarrassing. I honestly feel bad for Sam with that wig. And the writer's inability to write an ending that doesn't rely on back-to-back montages accompanied by two versions of the same song. And the worst part is seeing incest shippers post images of Dean's death as if it was something glorious. The writers, director, and network owe everyone not only an explanation but and outright apology! And they should pay out for emotional distress.
Walker: Dig (2021)
Thank Heaven for Richard Speight Jr
Finally a director that made this watchable! So far this is the only episode worth watching and it still has awful dialogue and story line. But Speight managed to pull some acting out of the cast that no other director has. Now if they can keep Speight and then get new writers... and a new storyline, this could work.
Walker (2021)
Rating objectively (novel idea)
When I first heard about this show I thought "this is where I'll fall in love with Jared P!". But liking him is not enough to save this show if I'm objective and honest (seems there are a lot of people rating 10/10 then complaining about sound... doesn't seem objective). But, here are my issues with the show.
1. The pacing is inconsistent, going from too slow to so fast you're either bored or confused, Just poor story telling.
2. Sound editing is overproduced and detracts from the dialogue.
3. PREDICTABLE! I picked out the bad guys as soon as they were on screen. I mean there weren't any convincing red herrings for intrigue.
4. Shallow takes on any possibly reflective moments. These were un-ironic attempts at earnest progressiveness that fell flat.
5. The flashbacks were awkward and fell into the whole dead mother was a saint trope.
6. Action sequences were obligatory and unrealistic. Why were they chasing a Jeep on horseback?
Positives
1. I've seen worse acting.
2. There are worse written shows. They exist.
3. Good looking main cast (mostly).
But if the kindest things I can say revolve around "worse shows exist" there is no way I can objectively rate it 10/10. An honest review is 4/10. Sorry Walker, I'm not impressed.
