Stake Land (2010)
Great Ensemble Ban Together In a zombie/vampire apocalypse
Can't say enough about this little horror movie gem that reminds of The Walking Dead except a much smaller group than the TV series. Nick Damici emerges as a grumpy badass who is only known as Mister takes on Martin (Connor Paolo from TV's Gossip Girl and Revenge) after stumbling on the kid whose family was just ripped apart by vamps. He teaches the kid who becomes his protege in this world how to survive. They meet Sister next, Kelly McGillis in a stunning performance as a nun they rescue from being raped and beaten. Danielle Harris also stars in one of her most underrated roles as Belle, who's singing in a bar in a town they stop in to make trades. The next morning she's hitchhiking and Martin just gives Mister a look like "Come on man!" Especially since the elder took time out to visit with a friendly lady while they were there and so Mister stops for their next companion. However, Belle is pregnant, which you know looms over them as they try to find a supposed safe area up north called New Haven all the while trying to avoid the Brotherhood, the group they made enemies of by saving the Sister. Sean Nelson plays the black soldier they pick up next who joins this family and can help provide some more muscle. I don't want to give anything else away but see this film. It's hauntingly beautiful, and emotional, and scary and intense. A great addition to the apocalypse horror sub-genre.
St. Elmo's Fire (1985)
Oh my God...one of my favorite movies ever!!! This was the 80s!
Come on...if you want to relive the 80s then you're revisit would not be complete without a viewing of St. Elmo's Fire. This film had everything we wanted in the 80s: a group of characters who were close-knit friends but with feuds, several love stories inter-locked, and featuring an all-star cast of 80s heartthrobs. I will never, ever, forget St. Elmo's Fire. I will forever remember sneaking into this film with my sister at our local there. It will always remain a moment in time for me during my adolescence. This film goes down in history for me alongside The Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink, Sixteen Candles, Can't Buy Me Love, About Last Night, Less Than Zero, and The Lost Boys.
