Sweet Tooth (2021)
Endearing, engrossing, and harrowing.
I had no idea what to expect when I started watching this. I kept expecting it to start sucking because so many shows do, but it just didn't. The acting is wonderful, the story and writing is excellent, and the whole thing just drew me in more and more. Ending the season with such a cliffhanger had me cursing at the screen because now I have to wait for Season 2.
This is a rare kind of show that takes a sort of sci-fi/fantasy story and not only doesn't ruin it with cheesy tropes and bad dialogue, but it shines instead.
Company of Heroes (2013)
Cheesy tropes and the actors can't save it.
So much about this is just bad. So many of the scenes defy common sense. I started to watch because I like some of the actors, but none of them could save the dialogue or the scene setup.
Small spoiler. Skip the next paragraph if you don't want to see it.
A couple of American soldiers are dressed up in Nazi uniforms to blend in at a Reich function for some mission and there's Tom Sizemore (sadly, forever typecast as the gruff, Brooklyn Sergeant) and another actor standing out in the open, in relaxed postures, speaking at regular volume in English about their mission while German SS and civilians are walking right past them and no one bats an eye.
The main villain, (and I didn't realize Jurgen Prochnow was this hard up for work), has this stylized metal leg brace and a chrome tipped cane and it just screams cheesy villain tropes. If this was meant to be a comedy, it would be Iron Sky (which I failed to get through).
I wanted to like this film, and I tried, but it just kept hammering me with suckage. After about 2/3rds of the movie, I chose to view it as satire, and that made it bearable.
The Great War (2019)
Good idea, crap execution.
While this story is an important one that needs to be told, it's just a bad movie all around. The dialogue is hackneyed and trite. The uniforms look too clean and intact, the sets look like they're for a high school play, the acting is weak and wooden, and the whole thing reeks of an amateur production.
This is like a film that someone with a few thousand dollars made with his friends in a local park. Plus, the blatant ripoffs of Saving Private Ryan are obvious.
I really tried to keep watching and wanted to like it, but it was just so bad.
