The Choirboys (1977)
WHAT A STEAMING HOT MESS !
Being a lifelong Joseph Wambaugh fan (I have read almost every book he's written), I was anxious to buy a DVD of the ' Choirboys', one of my favorite books ...
I have read that Wambaugh hated the movie so much, he sued to have his name removed from it's credits ... I understand perfectly ...
This is, without a doubt, the WORST film ever made ... it easily stands up to the very worst of cinema history ... forget 'Attack of the Giant Tomatoes', or 'Plan 9 from Outer Space', etc., they are masterpieces compared to this turd ! ...
Total waste of time and money ... a decent cast, wasted on a pathetic mess ... the acting is beyond amateurish ... Randy Quaid, a joke of an actor anyway, portrayed the WORST drunk scene ever attempted ...
even the sound is terrible, with many portions sounding like they were dubbed in during a bad hangover ... check out the 'laughing fit' scene of Burt Young's scene, it sounds as though a cackling old bag-lady was hired to do the scene ... btw, Young gave the only a decent performance, evidence of his skill as an actor ...
I'm finished, this mess has already gotten more attention than it deserves ...
Doctor Strange (2016)
Special Effects Masterpiece ! - otherwise, so-so
Doctor Strange was my favorite comic book when growing up, bar none ... I owned virtually every single issue (wish I still had them !) ... to be honest, I don't remember Dr. Strange engaging in fist fights, etc., I only remember a lot of 'spell-casting' (the 7 Rings of Raggador, etc.) ...
this film has some of the best Special-Effects available to date, truly groundbreaking quality - however, for me, that's where the interest ends ... the acting is all OK, Cumberbatch is the perfectly-cast lead character, and the rest were interesting and competent ... but, other than that, it's just a couple hours of 'eye candy' ...
I saw it at the theater in 3-D, and I own the DVD ... I watched it again, then put it away, it's not one of my DVDs that I can watch over and over again ...
The Public Eye (1992)
One of my all-time Favorites ...
'The Public Eye' has been one of my favorites since I first saw it ... my personal interest in Black & White photography initially attracted me to it, but, after watching it several times, I have really come to admire the great 'feel' of the film ... the sets are authentic-appearing, lots of attention to detail, they even got the camera and props right ... any fan of film-noir, and period pieces, should love this one ... excellent acting all-around ... Pesci's character comes across as 'real', to me, a very believable portrayal, definitely one of his top performances ... there should have been some Academy Award nominations for this one, in my opinion ... it's a shame 'The Public Eye' hasn't made it to DVD, and been promoted more ... I've always been curious as to Pesci's opinion of this film ... ?
