Beans (2020)
Best movie of 2020
Seriously, this movie blew me away. Kiawentiio may be very young, but her talent feels beyond her years. Also some other familiar faces Paulina Alexis and D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai from Reservation Dogs. Literally lightning in a bottle casting for this debut film by Tracey Deer. So much that I cant imagine her ever topping this and yet she most definitely will. I was fortunate enough to see it virtually during its festival circuit, but now that it's available for purchase, I've bought it and rewatched already. This is just the kind of movie that reminds you why you love movies! And being someone who has forgotten for a while, it's a breath of fresh air to remember.
American Horror Stories: Game Over (2021)
started horrible, ended surprisingly alright... was still extremely confusing w plot holes tho
I really did not like that opener, but I guess it being revealed as a video game instantly gives it some credence in what it was trying to do... I guess...
I would say I've been quite open minded with this new spin-off series, especially when it comes to the new cast members featuring. But I'll be honest, the nepotism w some of the casting choices was not always the best, performance wise.
To be frank, I actually didn't mind Paris Jackson or Kaia Gerber's performances. Despite them being very young, with little acting experience, they still managed to be pretty believable, for the most part.
Noah Cyrus on the other hand... there were maybe 2 shots where she was believable throughout her entire time on-screen (which was maybe 8 minutes in all), while the rest was pretty god awful. She was just too aware of the camera, her face showed it so obviously and it was pretty distracting to watch. You can imagine I was relieved to see her sequence be short lived.
Although, Noah's also pretty young and inexperienced when it comes to acting, so I don't want to give her too harsh of criticism. Not to mention, she does have an incredible voice so I didn't mind that track of hers playing at the end of the ep at all!
When it comes to the rest of the episode, I was unfortunately spoiled about the game aspect, so I knew that concept vaguely going into it. It may very well have been better not knowing, but I think overall it wasn't as bad as everyone s the me to be saying, imo.
I think the strong suit of the episode (like every episode of ahstories thus far) was of course the og ahs cast cameos, which included I think at least two previous castmembers for sure. It's just something so simple that I appreciate, and on its own it honestly does make it feel like ahs. Unfortunately this time around, it barely saved the episode from being a total flop.
The worst part for me had to be the confusing concept of everything overall and how it just made zero sense. Yes it was meta, but it was meta over meta over meta. Arguably, if done well that wouldn't be so bad, and if I'm being honest, it wasn't even totally horrible in this case. But it just makes you question what the intention of the story was and if that actually matches what it ended up being. I got the impression it ended up coming off more flawed than consistent.
Basically, AHS, the literal series (seasons 1-9), exists within this episode (ahstories apparently doesn't? Even though the plot of this episode jumps us up to 2024-2025?) The main characters of this episode actually acknowledge AHS's existence, but at the same time we're seeing those same main characters interact with ahs murder house characters? But those characters are just that, characters, as they don't actually exist. So that confusing fact along with the plot jumping from being a game, to being a game within a game, it gets a little too muddled up to not at least mention it as something I'm genuinely confused about.
Maybe that was the point though.
Not the best of AHS, but arguably not the worst (imo entertaining as always).
Never Have I Ever (2020)
Okay
I think this show deserves the hype because at the very least it's not like every other show out there. They did a good job bringing in an amateur actress for the lead, she does quite well considering!
Unfortunately the chemistry between her and both of her love interests just isn't there for me. Like I don't feel any sparks which makes it hard to enjoy the show overall, as these pairings become such a focal point even more so in season 2.
Maybe they could introduce a third potential love interest in season 3? Someone who actually has chemistry with the lead, where their chemistry feels more electric and less platonic?
Also , it might help to cast a lot interest who is actually the same age as the lead. I think that's a big part of why it feels awk. A guy who's actually her age might feel more comfortable portraying a character who is attracted to her versus someone whose 10 years older than her.
Black Medicine (2021)
Cried by the end
Went into this open minded. I thought maybe it would be good, but wouldn't be surprised if it was bad either. Turns out I was crying by the end.
Anne (2017)
One of the best shows I've ever seen.. CBC wtf
CBC is delusional for canceling this series, when they have shows that go on 10+ seasons. I mean Heartland? Pushing past season 14. Then you have Anne with an E, which is an adaptation of Anne of Green Gables, a book series that had 8 books, with multiple sequels beyond that even. CBC had so much potential to turn this into a huge franchise, but called it quits because the show did better on Netflix than for them?? CBC isn't going to have another hit series anytime soon, considering all of their major shows are ending as we speak. If they don't renew Anne with an E they're just screwing themselves over. Especially when the creator and everyone involved wants it to continue. CBC not allowing any other broadcaster to renew it, because they are still bitter they can't get people to watch CBC as much as Netflix and all the new up and coming streaming platforms, is ridiculous!
