A Gentleman in Moscow (2024)
Disappointed
I absolutely loved the book. The writing was absolutely beautiful. So when I heard they were making a series, I was excited to see the outcome. Regrettably, I was wrong. The show has take many liberties with the book. While many of the characters remain, the show has decided to add their own twists to the original storyline. While I usually can overlook the changes in going from book to screen, my love for the book doesn't allow me to make that concession here. The character/ story takes place over several decades, yet Ewan McGregor looks the same age throughout the show. Casting choices don't seem right.. it's fair. Probably would have liked it if I wasn't such a huge fan of the book.

Season review
While many seem to rate according to their happiness with Elizabeth's man selection, I'm not even addressing that outcome with this review. On the whole, I think it was a good season for the storytelling. The show has made efforts to become a real ensemble show and it is the better for it. Two characters, Molly and Florence, who have been on the show since inception, really came into their own this season as they became more than just filler or background. They each received individual writing and I can't wait to see more of these two heading into season nine. Other characters as well, such as Fiona, Mike and Ned, saw their storylines improve. All was such a welcome addition to the show. Rosemary and Lee, who always seem to be the town's Godmother and Godfather, finally found their passion occupation (hopefully Lee wins his election) and should be set to offer fun stories into the next season. We finally saw a resolution to the Carson and faith story, which dragged a bit, but it's been decided and the characters can move on. The arrival of a new family also provided some great storytelling.
The writers have set the stage for some great stories in the next season, which is often is hard to do as a show ages. Who is buying up the town's real estate? And why the need for those Pinkerton guys? Will the additional building and potential population explosion cause trouble for the townsfolks? Obviously, will Abigail return and how will Bill factor in, if she returns to run the diner?
All in all, a pretty good season and looking forward to the next.
