Shrek 2 (2004)
Good film
As was in the first film, Eddie Murhpy's character Donkey is still knocking about and as was in the first film, he's remains both overstaying his welcome in the company of the protagonists and annoying them with his chatter.
This domestic bliss is broken by the arrival of a royal troupe of trumpeters and their messenger, a statement of which arrives with him informing Fiona that she must, at once, report home to her parents in a place known as The Kingdom of Far Far Away which they rule. Gripes aside, the threesome push off; once there, the kingdom being a very different locale to that of what a sheltered existence in a tower for most of one's life or the living in a swamp off of the land is like. Arriving to a track entitled "Funky Town", instilling a sense of niche, corporate credibility about proceedings, the trio uncover a place steeped in materialism; capitalism; supply; demand and a place which actually contains streets, roads, laws and an order - Shrek and the crew have their work cut out. The fact these fish are out of their proverbial waters are the least of their worries, Shrek's clashing with the John Cleese voiced King Harold, Fiona's father, the result of initial coming-togethers going awry; the expansive first dinner they all have together seeing Shrek positioned in front of a stuffed hawk mounted on the wall up and behind him as the proverbial vultures circle. Harold and Shrek's clashing carries with it an amusing undercurrent of class distinction, the fact Harold et al. are humans and Shrek is an ogre (running on how we all know human's react to such) are surface binary oppositions to that of Shrek's humble, essentially farm based background, up against that of the king and queen's rich, expansive and affluent lifestyle in this consumerist driven Dystopia.
Things are complicated further when a hideous creation in the form of The Fairy Godmother (Saunders) arrives, a sort of grotesque extension of this world's ideologies; a celebrity in these parts whom whips crowds into frenzies and plays up to a kindred, spirited surface persona but is internally morally decrepit. Here is a creature whose idea of happiness is in the form of a tonic designed to gloss over all of life's problems, before quick-marching to a designated point in one's existence which encompasses artificially photogenic partners; lots of clothes and labels on top of rich, faux-rewarding surroundings - much rather than a conclusion someone may have reached naturally with somebody else for what it is they are.
Live Fast, Die Young (2008)
Leave your prejudices outside the door...
Went to see this at the theater in LA not expecting too much. I heard it was a tad religious, but that doesn't scare me all that much.
There was not a dry eye in the house when the movie ended. I won't give the ending away, but suffice it to say this is a truly wonderful story, one that you will love and tell your friends to see. If you're looking for one of those great movie experiences that so rarely comes along, you'll not find a better film to see than this.
This film is an excellent example of movie making that does not require elaborate sets to entertain the viewer. The majority of the film takes place in a mansion with the party-goers never leaving the room apart from going upstairs on occasion. The cast and dialogue make this film memorable and the film has some clear moral issues that are addressed.
Man on the Moon (1999)
Good performance
Good performance from Carrey although I truthfully only saw Jim. How these critics saw him as Kaufman belies my imagination.
I truthfully was hesitant to see this movie due to the fact Jim Carrey was in it, knowing I've never seen him in a serious role. I didn't think he could honestly pull it off. But he did a great job, it's just he didn't at all remind me of Andy.
Also, I don't think they should have made a bio film of this. Too many great comedians would have made far more compelling stories - think Abbott and Costello and their triumph over Hollywood in the 40s, etc.
This movie was truly a feel good movie (where the good guy wins). It is for anyone who wants to be entertained slightly.
Dumb and Dumber (1994)
Classic movie
This movie is a classic. Great launch vehicle for Carrey!
I had wanted to see it when I was younger, but of course I wasn't allowed to. I saw this a few months ago and it was even better now. This is one of Jim Carrey's best performances, he nails the role of an idiot perfectly (not to mention his costume...). The movie was one of the first to feature Carrey at his best.
This is comedy at its absolute best - makes you laugh.
Some might say this does not transfer to the new level of comedy, but It definitely does. If you were once a fan of Carrey or are still a fan of Daniel, this movie is definitely worth checking out.
Nacho Libre (2006)
Good film with a decent message
I wouldn't say this is one of Jared's best films, but this one still has some good things to offer. There is a fair amount of good laughs and an entertaining story, but not as great as Napoleon Dynamite. I liked the fact that the film doesn't have the same tripe or innuendos as today's modern comedies.
Jack Black does a fine job with his role, playing a very similar character to most of his other films. Black is good at what he does and doesn't seem to stray very far from what works. The Latin nun is fantastic in the film, looking just gorgeous and playing her role very well. The only other actors that were familiar to me were the movers in the beginning of the film,
If you are a fan of Jack Black, then I'd recommend seeing this film, you'll probably enjoy it. But, if Jack Black isn't your cup of tea, then this may not be the film for you. In any case, if you do see it, I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for reading,
