Family Guy: Jersey Bore (2022)
"Jersey Bore" Is An Accurate Title
As is standard for many of the most recent Family Guy episodes, the show is plagued with inconsistent characterization and bizarre, poorly written scripts.
This episode jumps from one scene, one idea to another haphazardly, spewing soft-ball jokes that land like a full-force punch from a double-arm amputee. Preston, while seeming like a no-brainer foil to Peter on paper, is an uninteresting character, whose bland, straight-laced characterization is, not surprisingly, bland (though this was certainly not the writer's intention).
Peter and Joe act nothing like they would have earlier in the series, which isn't indicative of any character development, so much as it indicates lazy writing from people who hardly understand these characters.
American Dad!: Bully for Steve (2010)
A Standout Episode
In this episode, Stan tries to instill toughness into Steve by becoming his bully (literally finding him at random times to harass him, complete with costume). Plenty of great moments, mostly in the form of memorable lines, like how whenever Steve is about to reveal that his father is his bully, Stan will threaten him, even in the principal's office, wig and everything. Of course the standout moment is the end fight scene between Stan's old bully, featuring his own goofy theme song, and Stan yelling out "Not the slidakopita!" to my own great personal enjoyment. The inclusion of Roger as a crime scene photographer to any degree, even the little bit of screen time, is a little baffling, though it doesn't really detract from the episode, but certainly doesn't add anything either.
Over all a very fun episode of American Dad.
Rick and Morty: Pilot (2013)
Mediocre First Episode of an Overrated Cartoon
Immediately upon my first viewing I felt as though the dialogue was improvised (and I was shocked when I found out it wasn't!), and not in some novel way but in a very slapdash manner. Incredibly rough pacing, and the characters have zero intelligence, with Rick being an unlikable, but more importantly, unfunny drunk with nonsense motivations. Most of the jokes landed like a ball of slime on a mattress, failing to supply little more than a slight upward creak the side of the mouth, much less a laugh.
